A CUDA-to-Ascend migration is a coordinated software-and-hardware change, not a search-and-replace of cuda with npu. First match the Ascend accelerator, driver, firmware, CANN, TorchNPU, PyTorch and Python versions. Then port device and runtime code, verify ordinary operators, review any Triton kernels, and validate numerical correctness before tuning performance. The exact package combination depends on the chip and operating system; use the current TorchNPU compatibility matrix for the target system.
1. Freeze the source environment before changing anything
Record the environment that currently runs the model. This gives you a reproducible baseline when an error appears after the move and prevents a framework change from being mistaken for a hardware-porting issue.
- PyTorch and Python versions, including the exact build or wheel.
- CUDA toolkit, GPU driver, cuDNN, NCCL and any other CUDA-dependent packages.
- Model revision, configuration, tokenizer or preprocessing code, precision mode, batch and sequence shapes, and whether the workload is training, evaluation or inference.
- Custom C++/CUDA extensions, fused operators, compiler flags and launch code.
- Container image, operating system, deployment framework and environment variables.
Save representative inputs, expected outputs, losses and evaluation metrics. Include awkward shapes such as a final partial batch, sequence lengths that are not multiples of the usual tile size, empty or masked regions, and the largest production tensor. Those cases often expose portability errors that a single “happy path” batch does not.
2. Identify the Ascend target and build a compatible stack
Compatibility is a four-way-or-more constraint. The Ascend device, driver and firmware must match the selected CANN release; TorchNPU must match both CANN and the PyTorch build; and the Python version must be one supported by that combination. Choosing each package independently can produce import errors, missing kernels or failures during device initialization.

The published matrix is version-specific and changes over time. At the time of the documentation snapshot (accessed 2026-10-13), one recommended combination lists TorchNPU package 2.12.0 with PyTorch 2.12.0, CANN 9.1.0 and Python 3.10, 3.11, 3.12, 3.13 or 3.14. The active table also maps TorchNPU 26.1.1 to multiple PyTorch package versions against CANN 9.1.x. Treat these as examples from that matrix, not as a universal installation command.
Read the matrix for the actual accelerator, operating system and package format you will deploy. It distinguishes a TorchNPU product release from the torch_npu package version; a suffix such as .postN is a package release suffix, not a conversion to a different TorchNPU product number. Confirm the driver and firmware pair recommended for the selected hardware and CANN release before installing anything.
| Layer | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Accelerator | Exact Ascend model and available memory/core configuration | Supported driver, firmware and CANN combinations are hardware-specific. |
| Operating system | Distribution, architecture and container requirements | Wheel availability and runtime initialization vary by platform. |
| Driver and firmware | Versions listed for the chosen device and CANN release | A mismatch can prevent device discovery or produce low-level runtime errors. |
| CANN | Toolkit/runtime release required by TorchNPU | Provides the Ascend compiler, libraries and device runtime used by the adapter. |
| TorchNPU and PyTorch | Exact pair in the official compatibility table | The adapter is not interchangeable with arbitrary PyTorch builds. |
| Python | Supported interpreter range for that row | Binary packages may fail to install or import outside the stated range. |
3. Install and smoke-test the environment
Install the matched components in a clean virtual environment or container. Keep a record of the package URLs and hashes used so the test can be reproduced. Initialize CANN using the path supplied by your installation. The project quick start uses the following path, but your installation may differ:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorssource /usr/local/Ascend/cann/set_env.sh
Import torch_npu explicitly. Automatic registration makes the import optional starting with TorchNPU 2.5.1 in some setups, but the project recommends retaining it as a reliable device-initialization step. Before loading the full model, run a small operation:
import torch
import torch_npu
x = torch.randn(2, 3).npu()
y = torch.randn(3, 4).npu()
z = torch.matmul(x, y)
print(z.device, z.shape)
The expected result is an NPU tensor with shape (2, 4). If this fails, stop and fix the stack, environment variables, permissions or device visibility. Debugging a model at this stage obscures the original problem.

4. Port ordinary PyTorch device code
Start with explicit placement and leave model mathematics unchanged. Search the codebase, configuration files and tests—not just the main training script—for CUDA-specific strings and helper functions.
| CUDA pattern | Typical NPU counterpart | Review required |
|---|---|---|
device="cuda" |
device="npu" |
Confirm the selected TorchNPU release accepts the device string in that API. |
tensor.cuda() |
tensor.npu() |
Check that the tensor is moved before dependent operations are created. |
tensor.to("cuda") |
tensor.to("npu") |
Preserve dtype and non-blocking behavior only when supported and tested. |
torch.cuda.* |
No automatic one-to-one replacement | Audit each call for streams, events, synchronization, memory queries or device discovery. |
Use a single device abstraction in application code where possible: construct the device once, pass it through the model and data pipeline, and avoid scattered string literals. Update checkpoint-loading code so tensors are restored onto the intended device rather than whichever device was recorded in the checkpoint. Data-loader workers, pinned-memory settings and asynchronous transfers also deserve an explicit review; do not assume a CUDA optimization has the same meaning on an NPU.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →5. Audit CUDA runtime assumptions instead of renaming symbols
Direct calls to torch.cuda often encode behavior that is not portable. Inspect every use of:
- Streams and events used to overlap copies or kernels.
- Explicit synchronization, elapsed-time measurements and stream waits.
- Device-count, device-name and GPU-capability queries used in assertions or branching.
- CUDA memory statistics, cache clearing and allocator configuration.
- CUDA graphs, peer-to-peer transfers, NCCL setup and custom launch parameters.
The Triton migration guidance notes that some synchronization logic can be removed or replaced on Ascend and that GPU-only discovery assertions may need to be deleted. Make that decision per code path; removing a synchronization point blindly can change program ordering, while retaining an unnecessary CUDA check can prevent the model from starting.
6. Establish operator and extension coverage
Run the model with standard PyTorch operators first. Exercise both the forward and backward paths if you train, and include every precision mode and optional feature used in production. TorchNPU documentation does not provide one exhaustive coverage table for every model, custom extension and library combination, so support remains a release- and model-specific check.

Classify failures into three groups:
- Unsupported operator: replace it with a supported formulation, isolate it to the host only when the performance cost is acceptable, or implement a custom kernel.
- Unsupported dtype or shape: change the precision or add a guarded fallback after measuring its numerical and latency impact.
- Custom extension: port and rebuild the extension against the Ascend toolchain; a CUDA binary cannot be loaded by TorchNPU.
Keep fallbacks visible in logs and tests. A silent CPU operation can make a small test pass while moving a large tensor across the device boundary on every iteration.

7. Migrate Triton kernels in a correctness-first sequence
Custom Triton code requires more than changing the tensor device. The official Triton migration guide recommends separating interface changes from kernel tuning.
Update the Python launch and test path
Move input, output and test tensors to npu, update device and runtime interfaces, and remove GPU-only discovery checks. Keep the kernel body unchanged for the first compile. This isolates syntax or runtime-registration problems from algorithmic changes.
Compile and compare outputs
Compile the unchanged body and compare it with a trusted PyTorch reference on representative shapes. Check absolute and relative tolerances appropriate to the model’s dtype; also compare losses or task metrics rather than relying on a single elementwise threshold. Test masks and boundary indices because an NPU launch can expose out-of-bounds accesses that did not appear in the original GPU test.
Reconsider grid and core allocation
Map the launch grid to the Ascend AI Core and Vector Core structure. The guide favors one-dimensional grids for many operators and distinguishes vector-only kernels from kernels using tl.dot; they may require different core counts. Do not copy a GPU block-count heuristic unchanged. The guide states that coreDim must not exceed 65,535.

Check alignment, masks and on-chip storage
Review every load and store for alignment and bounds. The migration guide specifies 32-byte memory alignment for vector operators and 512-byte alignment for cube-vector fused operators. Ensure masks protect tail elements and that temporary data fits the available on-chip buffer. These are implementation constraints from the guide, not universal specifications for every Ascend chip.
Review dtypes and dot-product tiling
Confirm that integer and index dtypes used by pointer arithmetic are supported. For tl.dot, re-evaluate M, N and K tile sizes, accumulator dtype and output dtype. Long sequences, large hidden dimensions and large K values may need explicit tiling so each step has a manageable data-movement and compute workload.
Tune only after correctness is stable
Once outputs match, vary grid size, tile dimensions, buffering and launch configuration using the actual production shapes. Keep a reference implementation and automated numerical tests so a faster kernel cannot silently regress accuracy.

9. Troubleshoot by symptom
Import or initialization failure
Recheck the PyTorch–TorchNPU–CANN row, Python version, driver/firmware match and CANN environment script. Confirm that the process can see the intended NPU and that no stale CUDA-only container variables override device selection.
Device string or placement error
Search for a remaining cuda literal, a hidden torch.cuda call or a checkpoint loaded onto the wrong device. Verify that torch_npu is imported before model construction and that the selected API supports npu in your release.
Operator-not-supported error
Reduce the failure to the smallest tensor and operator, then check release documentation. Replace the operation, change dtype or isolate a fallback only after measuring transfer and synchronization costs.
Triton compile or wrong-result error
Return to the unchanged kernel body, verify NPU tensors and reference outputs, then inspect grid dimensions, masks, alignment, supported index dtypes and tl.dot tile and accumulator choices. Check tail shapes rather than testing only dimensions divisible by the nominal tile.
Unexpectedly poor performance
Separate compile time, host-to-device transfers, synchronization and kernel execution in the profile. Confirm that the model has not fallen back to the CPU, that grid/core allocation matches the operator type, and that measurements use production shapes. Performance tuning before eliminating fallbacks usually optimizes the wrong bottleneck.
10. Decide when to keep standard PyTorch and when to port a kernel
Prefer standard TorchNPU operators when they cover the model and meet latency and memory targets: they reduce maintenance and version risk. Consider a Triton port when a measured hotspot is unsupported or materially limits the workload, and when your team can maintain device-specific tests across CANN and TorchNPU upgrades. Compare both choices on correctness, operator coverage, measured performance and operational maintenance; the available guidance does not identify a universally superior option.
Quick Recap
Migration completion checklist
- Target chip, operating system, driver and firmware are documented.
