Before buying a refurbished or open-box laptop, verify the exact unit and configuration, who is selling it, what its condition claims mean, and what return and warranty protection applies. Then check battery evidence and whether the hardware can run a currently supported operating system and your workload. Inspect the laptop as soon as it arrives, while you can still use the stated return process.
Check the seller and the exact laptop
A marketplace listing may be sold by a third party, and its protections may depend on the seller or item. Confirm who takes payment, who handles a problem, and whether marketplace buyer protection applies to this specific listing. The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises buyers to check a marketplace’s refund and return rules, support process, and safe payment options before buying: FTC guidance on online shopping.
- Find the seller’s contact information, terms, shipping fees, and return policy.
- Get the exact manufacturer, model number, processor, memory, storage, screen specification, and any other configuration details that matter to you.
- Prefer photos of the actual laptop over stock images. Ask whether the photos show the unit you will receive.
- Save the listing and keep written answers to your questions.
Ask the seller: “What exact model and configuration is this?” and “Are these photos of the actual unit?”

Those labels do not, by themselves, establish a universal inspection, repair, or grading standard. Read the full description and distinguish cosmetic condition from functional testing. The FTC cautions that an item described as refurbished may not be in top condition. See its online-shopping guidance and advice on buying used products.

- Look for specific disclosures about scratches, dents, screen marks, missing parts, or replaced components.
- Ask what was tested, repaired, or replaced, and whether any defects remain.
- Check whether the charger and other accessories are included, and whether they are original or compatible replacements.
Ask: “What was tested, repaired, or replaced?” Get important answers in writing rather than relying on a condition label alone.
Read the return and warranty terms before paying
Check the written terms for this item before checkout. A marketplace return policy, seller warranty, and manufacturer warranty are separate protections; do not assume one provides the coverage of another. FTC consumer guidance says written warranty terms should be available before purchase and recommends reviewing coverage and the process for making a claim. See FTC guidance on warranties.
- Confirm the return deadline and whether returns are allowed for a change of mind as well as for defects.
- Find out who pays return shipping and whether the seller offers a refund, exchange, or repair.
- For any warranty, check its duration, covered parts and labor, exclusions, claim procedure, repair provider, and shipping charges.
- Save the listing, warranty terms, receipt, and seller correspondence.
Ask: “What is the return deadline, and who pays return shipping?” and “Who handles a warranty repair, and what costs are excluded?”

Ask for battery evidence
A laptop’s appearance does not show how much battery capacity remains. Capacity declines with charge and discharge use, and actual runtime also depends on workload and settings. There is no universal remaining-capacity percentage in the cited Microsoft guidance that every buyer should use as a rejection threshold.
For Windows 11, Microsoft documents the powercfg /batteryreport command to generate detailed battery information. On devices more than three years old, the PC Health Check app can show battery capacity relative to the original capacity. Read Microsoft’s Windows battery guidance for details. Ask the seller for a battery report or a written battery guarantee, and consider whether the disclosed condition suits your expected use.
Ask: “Can you provide a battery-capacity report or a battery warranty?”

Check the hardware and operating-system support
Match the exact configuration to the software you plan to run. Compare the processor model and generation, memory, storage, display, ports, and wireless features against your applications and workload; a machine that meets an operating-system minimum may still be inadequate for demanding work.

If you need Windows 11, check the exact laptop with Microsoft’s PC Health Check app or compare it with the Windows 11 requirements. Microsoft lists a supported processor, at least 4 GB of RAM, at least 64 GB of storage, UEFI with Secure Boot capability, and TPM 2.0 among the requirements. Those are minimum system requirements, not a guarantee of good performance for your needs.
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Do not assume a laptop running Windows 10 still receives free security updates; check the device’s supported upgrade path and the software support you require. See Microsoft’s Windows 10 end-of-support information.

Inspect the laptop during the return window
When it arrives, compare it with the saved listing and test it promptly. If the model, condition, or included accessories do not match, document the difference and contact the seller through the stated process before the return deadline.
- Check the model and serial number against the listing and any documentation. Confirm that the promised accessories are included.
- Inspect the display, case, hinges, keyboard, and trackpad for damage or problems that were not disclosed.
- Test the ports, webcam, speakers, and wireless connection, along with the charger and battery behavior.
- Record mismatches or defects and contact the seller through the documented return or protection process.
Compare listings on the same terms
Once you have shortlisted credible options, compare the details that affect both usability and risk rather than judging by a low headline price alone. Include shipping and taxes in the total price.
