Revenue growth is only the starting point. To judge what a quarter says about a company, check whether sales growth is comparable, whether it is producing profit and cash, how the balance sheet and business segments are changing, and what assumptions sit behind the outlook. Use the same company’s results over time first; compare peers only when their definitions and reporting periods are genuinely comparable.
1. Check whether the growth is comparable
Start with the same quarter a year earlier, since many businesses are seasonal. A sequential comparison can add context, but it may reflect normal seasonality rather than a change in direction.
Separate reported sales growth from organic or constant-currency growth. Then look for the factors management identifies: acquisitions or divestitures, business closures, foreign-exchange movements, pricing, sales volume, and product or customer mix. These can make headline growth look stronger or weaker than the underlying trend.

For example, W.W. Grainger reported 10.3% sales growth in Q2 2026 and 13.7% growth on a daily, organic, constant-currency basis after normalizing for its U.K. exit and foreign-exchange impact. The measures answer different questions; Grainger’s adjustment is not a universal formula for other companies. Grainger’s Q2 2026 earnings release explains its calculation.

2. See whether sales are turning into profit
Read gross profit and margin, operating income and margin, net income and margin, and diluted earnings per share (EPS). Compare both dollars and margins with the prior-year quarter: revenue can rise while margins shrink, or margins can improve even if growth is modest.
Use the company’s explanation to understand the change. Relevant drivers may include pricing, product mix, input and freight costs, operating expenses, interest, taxes, or the number of shares outstanding. Do not assume a cause from the headline figures alone.
Grainger said its Q2 2026 operating margin rose 120 basis points year over year, attributing the improvement to gross-margin gains, sales leverage in one segment, and its U.K. exit. It also said EPS reflected fewer shares and a higher effective tax rate. Those details show why EPS, margins, and management’s stated drivers should be read together. Grainger’s release provides the company’s explanation.

Compare cash from operating activities with net income, then read the discussion of working capital. Receivables, inventory, and payables can shift cash between quarters. A temporary timing effect is different from a sustained inability to collect from customers or manage inventory, so check whether management describes a timing issue and whether the pattern persists.
Next, account for capital expenditures, which are cash spent on property and equipment. Many companies present free cash flow as operating cash flow less capital expenditures, but the measure is not uniformly defined under GAAP. Always check the issuer’s definition and reconciliation before comparing it with another company’s figure.
In Q2 2026, Grainger reported $444 million in operating cash flow, $111 million in capital expenditures, and $333 million in free cash flow; it said unfavorable working capital partly offset operating cash flow. This is an issuer-reported example, not a target for other businesses. Grainger’s release describes the quarter.

Definitions can differ materially. Innovex’s 2025 Form 10-K defines free cash flow as operating cash flow less capital expenditures, but cautions that it does not represent residual cash available for discretionary spending because it excludes obligations such as credit-facility principal payments. Avantor’s Q2 2026 release uses a different definition, adding certain acquisition-related transaction costs and taxes to cash from operations less capital expenditures. Innovex’s 2025 Form 10-K and Avantor’s Q2 2026 release set out their respective definitions.
Finally, examine how cash was used: capital investment, acquisitions, debt repayment, dividends, or share repurchases. Cash generation matters alongside the demands competing for it.
4. Assess financial resilience and capital allocation
Review cash, gross and net debt where provided, liquidity, leverage measures, debt maturities, and other commitments described in the filing. Then ask whether the company’s cash allocation supports its stated priorities, such as investment, acquisitions, debt reduction, dividends, or buybacks.
Leverage measures are often adjusted and company-defined; there is no universal safe threshold established by these examples. Avantor reported cash of $306.8 million, gross debt of $3,715.4 million, and adjusted net leverage of 3.3x as of June 30, 2026. Treat those as company- and date-specific disclosures, not a benchmark for another issuer. Avantor’s release explains the measure.
5. Look beneath consolidated results
A company-wide figure can conceal very different performance among businesses. Compare segment sales and margins, and read management’s explanation for each segment’s change. Where reported, sector-specific indicators such as orders, bookings, backlog, customer retention, or unit volumes can help clarify whether current revenue reflects continuing demand or earlier activity.

6. Read guidance together with its assumptions
Compare the latest full-year guidance range with the previous range. Check whether each measure is GAAP or adjusted, how much of the year remains, and what management assumes about currency, taxes, restructuring, capital spending, and demand. Consider whether the quarter’s results support the outlook or point in a different direction.
Avantor raised its organic revenue growth and adjusted EPS outlook in its July 29, 2026 release, while listing assumptions and warning that some forward-looking non-GAAP measures could not be reconciled without unreasonable effort. GE Vernova also raised its 2026 revenue and free-cash-flow guidance in its Q2 results. These are dated examples of revisions, not current forecasts for other periods. Avantor’s release and GE Vernova’s results exhibit provide their respective outlooks.
7. Treat adjusted metrics as additional context
Adjusted EBITDA, organic growth, adjusted EPS, and free cash flow may help explain management’s view of performance, but similarly named measures can use different calculations. Find the reconciliation to the closest GAAP measure, inspect what management adds or removes, and check whether the definition is consistent across periods.

Avantor says non-GAAP measures should not be considered in isolation or as substitutes for reported GAAP results, and encourages investors to review its SEC-filed consolidated financial statements. Start with the reported GAAP statements, then use adjusted measures as supplements. Innovex’s 2025 Form 10-K and Avantor’s release discuss these limitations.
Put the quarter in context before comparing companies
There is no single metric that ranks every business. First compare one issuer with its own prior periods using consistent definitions. For peer comparisons, check that reporting periods, business mix, segment definitions, accounting measures, and non-GAAP calculations are sufficiently alike. The examples here establish no universal target for growth, margins, cash conversion, or leverage, and do not show that any one metric predicts investment returns. Quarterly results are educational information, not a company-specific assessment or investment recommendation.
