To judge whether an ASX-listed mining explorer can fund its stated work, start with its latest quarterly activities report and Appendix 5B, then check later announcements for changes. Read the cash balance alongside cash burn, the form’s estimated funding runway, facility terms, the status of proposed funding and the work program it is meant to support. A reported number of quarters is a standardized snapshot—not a guarantee that funds will last that long.

Start with the latest quarterly report and later announcements

For a mining exploration entity, begin with its latest quarterly activities report and Appendix 5B, the quarterly cash-flow report for mining and oil and gas exploration entities. ASX says these filings inform the market about the entity’s activities during the quarter, how they were financed and the effect on its cash position. ASX Appendix 5B

Note the reporting period and filing date. Then look for later ASX announcements that may report a placement, facility, asset sale or other event affecting cash after quarter end. A quarterly balance is a point-in-time figure; it may no longer describe the company’s position by the time you read it.

Check the cash balance and what changed it

Reconcile cash on hand

Find cash and cash equivalents at quarter end. Check how the filing breaks that amount down—such as bank balances, call deposits, overdrafts or other components—and confirm it is consistent with the cash-flow statement. Take note of the stated currency and units; figures may be reported in Australian dollars and thousands.

Trace cash burn to the work

Review net cash from or used in operating activities and investing activities. For an explorer, inspect exploration and evaluation payments separately, as well as relevant tenement and equipment spending. Compare the quarter with year-to-date figures and the prior quarter where shown. Use the activities report to connect those outflows with work completed and planned; high spending may reflect an active program, while lower spending may reflect delayed or reduced work.

Interpret the Appendix 5B funding estimate

Appendix 5B reports total relevant outgoings, cash and cash equivalents, unused financing facilities, total available funding and estimated quarters of funding available. The form calculates the estimate by dividing total available funding by total relevant outgoings. If relevant outgoings are positive—a net cash inflow—the form says to report the estimate as “N/A.” ASX Appendix 5B

Read the estimate as a standardized snapshot based on the outgoings reported, not a forecast that spending or available funds will remain unchanged. Drilling schedules, project decisions, contractor timing and cost reductions can change cash use; financing can change funds available. Check the underlying figures and the company’s stated assumptions before treating the estimate as a guide to how long its plans can continue.

Separate facility capacity from cash the company can use

Do not treat a facility’s headline size as cash already in the bank. Distinguish its total amount, the amount drawn and the unused amount. Read the facility terms for the lender, interest rate, maturity date and whether it is secured or unsecured. Conditions, security or restrictions on permitted use may affect how much of the unused amount is realistically available for the stated work. Appendix 5B asks entities to describe financing arrangements and these facility details.

Classify each funding plan by status

Follow announcements linked to the quarterly report and identify what stage each source has reached. A useful distinction is whether money has already arrived, is firmly committed, or remains proposed or conditional.

  • Received: cash has been received; check the date and amount against the latest cash disclosure.
  • Committed: a firm commitment exists, but confirm any conditions and expected settlement date before treating proceeds as available.
  • Proposed or conditional: the transaction is not settled cash. Note approvals, other conditions and expected timing, and do not add the proceeds to cash on hand.

Apply the same scrutiny to placements, entitlement offers, debt, asset sales, joint-venture contributions and other plans. Appendix 5B asks entities reporting less than two quarters of estimated funding to describe steps taken or proposed to raise further cash and how likely management considers those steps to succeed. That disclosure is management’s assessment, not proof that the money has been secured.

Test funding against the actual work program

Compare cash and realistically available funding with the scale and timing of the work described in the activities report, plus near-term obligations. Look for explicit spending changes, deferred work, asset disposals or cost-management actions. Ask whether those changes preserve the stated objectives, reduce the program’s scope or delay it. A statement that management is confident about raising capital is an outlook statement; it is not equivalent to funds received.

For example, Infinity Mining’s Appendix 5B for the quarter ended 30 June 2025 reported $321,000 in cash and described cost management and possible funding options. The filing also stated that estimated outflows exceeded available cash over the next quarter, while the board expressed confidence in obtaining additional capital if required. This historical example shows why reported cash, prospective options and management confidence should be read as distinct evidence; it does not establish the company’s current funding position. Understand the two-quarter disclosure trigger

Appendix 5B requires additional answers when estimated funding is below two quarters. The entity must address whether current net operating cash flows are expected to continue, what steps it has taken or proposes to take to raise further cash and how likely those steps are to succeed, and whether it expects to continue operations and meet its business objectives—and on what basis. The form version identified as 17 July 2020 sets out this reporting threshold. ASX Appendix 5B

Use the trigger as a reason to examine the issuer’s answers closely, not as a stand-alone conclusion about solvency or whether a funding plan will succeed. The threshold is a disclosure prompt, not a universal safety benchmark.

Compare companies on the same basis

When comparing explorers, use the same reporting period and assess the figures alongside each company’s activity and project stage. Cash balances alone do not show whether funding is adequate for different programs.

What to compare What to check
Cash and cash equivalents Quarter-end balance, components, currency and units.
Cash outflows Operating and exploration/evaluation spending, including the period covered.
Estimated funding quarters The reported estimate and the outgoings used to calculate it.
Financing facilities Unused amount, terms, conditions, security and maturity.
Other funding Amounts received versus committed, proposed or conditional proceeds.
Funding purpose The work program and near-term obligations the available funds are meant to support.

A practical reading sequence

  1. Open the latest quarterly activities report and Appendix 5B. Record the quarter ended and filing date.
  2. Check for later announcements. Look for events that may have changed cash or financing after quarter end.
  3. Reconcile cash and review outflows. Trace the balance to its components, then relate spending to work completed and planned.
  4. Read the funding estimate and facility details. Check the form’s underlying outgoings, available-funding calculation and any facility conditions.
  5. Classify proposed funding and compare it with the plan. Separate settled receipts from other sources, then assess whether realistically available money supports the stated work and obligations.
