Before trusting a tech review, check who wrote and published it, whether it shows evidence of real product use, how its evidence supports its verdict, and whether any material relationship is disclosed. Then compare important claims with other credible sources. A star rating or suspicious-looking review alone cannot establish whether a review is reliable or fake.
What should I check before I trust a tech product review?
- Who is behind it? Identify the reviewer and publisher. Consider their relevant experience and whether the publication’s independence is clear. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises consumers to consider both the reviewer and the source of a review (FTC consumer guidance).
- Is there evidence of actual use? Look for details about what the reviewer tried, rather than unsupported claims of personal testing. FTC endorsement guidance says endorsers should not describe experiences they have not had (FTC Endorsement Guides FAQ).
- Can you follow the reasoning? Check that the review connects evidence to its conclusions and supports claims that need proof. The tests should suit the product and the claim being assessed; the FTC does not prescribe one technical testing plan for every kind of technology.
- Are material relationships disclosed? Look for clear disclosure of payment, a free product, or another connection that could affect how readers interpret the recommendation. FTC guidance identifies compensation and free products as examples of material connections that should be disclosed clearly and conspicuously (FTC Endorsement Guides FAQ; FTC guidance for platforms and marketers).
- Is the rating presentation transparent? Consider how reviews are collected, processed and displayed, how an average is calculated, and whether positive and negative feedback are treated fairly. FTC staff recommends transparency about these practices (FTC guidance for platforms and marketers).
- Have you cross-checked? Compare the review with other credible sources, including impartial expert reviews. Check when it was published and the reviewer’s history; an unusual burst of reviews can merit closer attention. FTC cautions that visual inspection alone may not distinguish genuine reviews from fake ones (FTC consumer guidance).
Was this actually tested?
A useful review makes clear what product and claims it evaluates, what the reviewer used or tried firsthand, and what information came from elsewhere. Look for specific evidence that bears on the verdict, as well as limitations that affect how widely the conclusion applies. A review can still be useful without testing every feature, provided it is candid about its scope.
There is no universal benchmark, instrument, sample size or test duration that makes every technology review trustworthy. A meaningful method depends on the device and the claim: the evidence needed to judge battery life is not necessarily the evidence needed to assess a software feature. The FTC’s guidance addresses substantiated claims and actual experience, not a technical standard for testing all product categories (FTC Endorsement Guides FAQ).

Look for a plain, visible disclosure near the recommendation or endorsement that explains a relevant connection, such as payment or receiving the product free. If the review does not make the relationship clear, do not assume there was no connection. Instead, weigh the review’s disclosed information, evidence and reasoning, and compare its claims with independent sources. FTC guidance says compensated people who promote or review a product should disclose that relationship; the Endorsement Guides were revised in June 2023 and are guidance, not regulations (FTC Endorsement Guides FAQ).

Can I trust the star rating?
Treat the score as one piece of information, not a substitute for the reviews behind it. Check how the platform collects and displays reviews, how it calculates the average, and whether negative and positive feedback appear to receive fair treatment. A large number of stars does not show what testing was done or whether the reviewer’s experience matches your needs. FTC staff recommends transparent rating methods and fair treatment of positive and negative reviews (FTC guidance for platforms and marketers).
How should you compare two reviews of the same product?
Compare the evidence and context, not just the final scores. Differences may reflect distinct product versions, test conditions or claims rather than a simple disagreement about quality.
Rank #2
- Evidence of firsthand use.
- How clearly each review explains its method and the claim being evaluated.
- Whether material relationships are disclosed.
- Whether the product version and test conditions match.
- How directly the evidence supports each verdict.
- Whether other credible sources reach compatible conclusions.
These are practical comparison questions, not an FTC scoring rubric.

What do suspicious reviews tell you—and what don’t they prove?
Recent bursts of reviews, a reviewer with little visible history, or possible incentives are reasons to investigate, not proof of fakery. FTC consumer guidance also warns that fake reviews can be negative as well as positive, and that appearance alone is not a reliable way to determine authenticity (FTC consumer guidance).
Rank #3
FTC staff separately recommends that platforms use reasonable processes to address authenticity, avoid altering reviews to change their message, avoid scrutinizing negative reviews more harshly, publish genuine feedback without excluding it merely for being negative, and investigate reports of suspicious reviews. Those recommendations concern platform practices; they are not a guarantee that every hosted review has been verified or that every report will result in an investigation (FTC guidance for platforms and marketers).

In the United States, the FTC’s Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule took effect on October 21, 2024. FTC materials describe it as addressing specified business conduct, including fake or false reviews and testimonials, incentives conditioned on a particular sentiment, certain undisclosed insider reviews, company-controlled review sites that falsely imply independence, certain forms of review suppression, and fake social-media influence indicators. A 2026 FTC document describes the rule as fully effective (FTC Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule; FTC 2026 update).
Rank #4
This is U.S. federal context, not a statement of worldwide law. FTC staff says ordinary consumers are not liable under this rule for what they say or omit in reviews; the provisions about review and testimonial content address business conduct. The rule does not guarantee every review is authentic or require platforms to investigate every review they host (FTC staff Q&A on the rule).
