Before buying a bank stock, examine whether its earnings are sustainable, its loans are performing, and its capital and funding can withstand stress. Start with the bank’s latest annual and quarterly filings, read the notes behind the headline figures, and compare it with similar banks over multiple periods. No single ratio establishes that a bank stock is a buy: the share price, business model, peers, and your own circumstances also matter.

Start with the bank’s filings

For a U.S. public company that files with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), use EDGAR to find its latest Form 10-K, Form 10-Q, and any relevant Form 8-Ks. A 10-K gives an annual view of the business and audited financial statements; a 10-Q provides quarterly financial statements, updates to risk disclosures, and management discussion. An 8-K can report material developments between regular filings.

In the 10-K, read the business description and risk factors, then the management’s discussion and analysis (MD&A), market-risk disclosures, financial statements, notes, and auditor’s report. MD&A explains management’s account of results, liquidity, capital resources, trends, uncertainties, and significant accounting estimates. The notes add detail on accounting policies and judgments that can affect comparisons between banks.

Some banks do not file with the SEC. They still provide updated financial information to banking regulators. Investor.gov points readers to resources from the Federal Reserve, Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, and Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC); the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council (FFIEC) Call Reports include details on bank assets, liabilities, and capital accounts. See Investor.gov’s overview of banks and bank holding companies and the FFIEC Central Data Repository.

Check whether earnings are durable

Look at net interest income, net interest margin (NIM), noninterest income, expenses, and returns on average assets and equity. NIM is net interest income divided by average earning assets. Review several quarters and years rather than treating one strong quarter as a reliable run rate.

Then determine what drove the results. A one-time gain, unusually low expenses, changing deposit or other funding costs, or a rise in credit-loss provisions can make reported earnings look stronger or weaker than the underlying trend. Management’s discussion and the relevant financial statement notes can help explain those changes.

Look beneath the credit-quality totals

Review delinquency and nonperforming-loan trends, charge-offs, provisions for credit losses, and the allowance for credit losses. These measures show different parts of the picture: problem loans, losses already realized, expected losses recognized through provisions, and reserves held against expected losses.

Check the loan mix as well as the overall totals. Losses can be concentrated in a particular loan category or sector even when aggregate measures appear stable. The FDIC tracks exposures including commercial real estate, business, consumer, residential, and agricultural lending in its Quarterly Banking Profile. Use the bank’s own portfolio disclosures to identify where its exposure lies.

Assess capital, liquidity, and funding together

Capital

Review the bank’s regulatory capital ratios, how they have changed, and management’s discussion of capital resources and planned distributions. Applicable requirements and the meaning of a ratio can depend on the bank and its regulatory approach, so compare like measures. A comparatively high capital ratio does not eliminate credit, funding, or other risks.

Liquidity and funding

Examine deposit growth and composition, wholesale funding, available liquidity sources, and management’s account of stress scenarios. Consider whether the bank relies heavily on concentrated or potentially rate-sensitive funding. The FDIC’s risk reviews discuss deposit growth and wholesale funding in the context of broader banking conditions; the bank’s filings explain its own funding profile.

Understand interest-rate and securities exposure

Interest-rate changes can affect both a bank’s earnings and the value of its securities. Read its market-risk disclosures for the exposures and assumptions it uses, and consider them alongside NIM, deposit trends, liquidity, wholesale funding, and any unrealized securities losses. These factors are connected: for example, funding costs and deposit behavior can change as rates move, while securities values can also be affected.

Review management, accounting, and controls

Read accounting-policy notes, changes in estimates, auditor findings, and management’s explanations for material year-over-year changes. Look for consistency between the explanation and the figures, and take note of significant judgments that may affect comparisons. The supervisory CAMELS framework groups bank assessments into capital, asset quality, management, earnings, liquidity, and sensitivity to market risk. It is a useful way to organize your review, but it is not a substitute for a regulator’s confidential examination of an individual bank.

Compare with relevant banks and regulator data

When meaningful peers exist, compare earnings and returns, asset quality and reserves, capital, liquidity and funding, and interest-rate sensitivity. Favor banks with similar business models, loan books, geographic markets, and size. Use consistent periods and definitions: differences in business mix and accounting judgments can change what a headline ratio means.

The FDIC Quarterly Banking Profile provides system-level context on earnings, loan and deposit activity, asset quality, and other conditions at FDIC-insured institutions. It is not a forecast for an individual bank. The FDIC says the profile is generally published about 55 days after quarter-end, so check the report’s period and publication date before using its figures. Federal Reserve banking reports also describe sector conditions; system aggregates are context, not targets or predictions for a particular stock.

Use the results to frame—not replace—the investment decision

A practical review asks whether earnings appear recurring, where credit risks sit in the loan book, whether capital and funding look resilient, and how rates could affect earnings and securities. Compare the answers with those for relevant peers and with regulator data, while accounting for the bank’s business mix and the period covered by each report.

Financial results alone cannot establish whether the shares are attractively priced. A buy decision also requires assessing the current share price against bank-specific facts and your own investment circumstances; there is no universal ratio or threshold that settles it.
