Before submitting a text-to-video, image-to-video, or reference-guided generation job, check five things: whether the brief is clear, the selected model supports the requested mode and settings, every asset is valid and reachable, references are authorized and consistent, and the final request and billing workflow are understood. These checks can catch avoidable technical and operational failures; they cannot guarantee a good video.
1. Make the brief and prompt testable
Write down what the result needs to show before filling in a prompt box. Depending on the controls the selected model offers, specify the subject, setting, action or motion, framing or camera behavior, visual style, duration, and delivery shape. Separate requirements from preferences: “show the cyclist crossing the bridge” is a requirement, while “late-afternoon light” may be a preference.
Keep the prompt aligned with the generation mode. A text-to-video prompt describes the scene to create; an image-to-video request also depends on what the supplied image establishes. If the brief relies on a reference for identity, composition, or another specific detail, say what role it should play rather than assuming the model will infer it.
Runway’s Text to Video Prompting Guide recommends starting simply and refining prompts around visual and motion elements. It also notes that not every prompt component needs to be specified; leaving some choices open gives the model room to interpret them. Treat this as guidance for Runway, not a rule that applies to every model. A clear prompt helps creative direction, but it does not prove the request is technically valid.

2. Confirm model, mode, and parameter compatibility
Check the current documentation for the exact model and interface or API you plan to use. Confirm that it accepts the task type and generation mode you intend, then verify duration, dimensions, aspect ratio, reference support, audio support, and any parameter combinations that the request permits.
Do not assume that two modes can be combined just because both are available. For example, SCX.ai’s Videos Create API Reference distinguishes an input_reference image-to-video field from a content field for omni references, and says those fields are mutually exclusive. Its model table also varies by model in supported counts and durations. That is an API-specific example, not a general limit for video generation.
There is no universal file, duration, aspect-ratio, or reference-count limit. Check the selected model’s current specification immediately before submitting, because documented constraints can change.

3. Validate assets and their delivery paths
For each image, video, audio file, or URL, confirm both that the media meets the provider’s requirements and that the provider can actually retrieve it. A correctly formatted file can still fail if a URL is inaccessible or its delivery headers are unsuitable.
- Format and encoding: Check accepted file types and codecs for the selected mode.
- Size and dimensions: Verify file-size caps, image or video dimensions, and any aspect-ratio restrictions.
- Access: Test that a URL is reachable by the service, not just by you. Follow requirements such as HTTPS or content headers where specified; otherwise use the provider’s supported upload path.
- Identity and order: Make clear which asset serves which purpose, and ensure prompt labels match the API’s expected naming or ordering.
Runway’s API Input Parameters documents provider-specific URL, header, codec, size, and model-dependent aspect-ratio constraints. SCX.ai’s API reference describes its own format and size requirements and positional labels such as “Image 1,” “Video 2,” and “Audio 1” for an omni-reference list. These examples should not be treated as universal specifications.
4. Check rights, consent, provenance, and consistency
Technical acceptance does not establish permission to use an image, video, audio clip, or person’s likeness. Keep a preflight record for each reference that identifies its source and creator, applicable license and territory or term, any relevant likeness consent, and the person responsible for approval. When rights or consent are unclear, resolve that before submission rather than treating successful upload as authorization.

Also check that the references agree with the brief. An image that conflicts with the approved subject, setting, or visual direction can pull the result away from the intended outcome. Give each reference a clear primary role and remove assets that do not help express the request.

Before sending the job, inspect the completed request as a whole. Confirm required fields, compatible parameter combinations, reference ordering, and destination or output settings. If the provider uses an API, know how it acknowledges a request, how to check job status, and where usage or billing information appears.

OpenRouter’s Submit a Video Generation Request documentation describes an acceptance response with an ID, polling URL, and status, followed by usage information. It also documents error classes including 400, 401, 402, 404, 429, and 500. These are OpenRouter-specific details; check the selected provider’s current documentation and dashboard for its response, retry, rate-limit, and billing behavior. Do not assume a failed request is free.
A preflight answers whether a request appears ready to send. It cannot guarantee that generation will complete, that the output will meet the brief, or that the result will be suitable for delivery. Those are separate checks after submission.
