Before you hand over your old phone, make sure your important data and account access work on the new Pixel, then compare the actual trade-in offer with what a private sale would net you. For US Google Store trade-ins, the final value can change after inspection; for a private sale, you take on the work of finding a buyer and verifying payment.
1. Check the phone and compare your options
Start with the exact device you have, not a general estimate. Identify its model, storage capacity, carrier and lock status, and whether you still owe payments on it. Check that it powers on and off, charges, and has no screen or body damage. Google says these factors can affect its trade-in assessment, along with whether the device is reset, unlocked, the model matches the order, and the device is reported lost or stolen. Google’s trade-in condition guidance explains the checks.
Get an offer for that exact model and condition, then compare the likely net result with a private-sale price. Account for marketplace fees, shipping, the time needed to find a buyer, any restrictions on how trade-in credit can be used, and the possibility that Google adjusts its estimate after receiving the phone. There is no reliable universal figure for how much an unspecified old phone is worth, or a rule that selling privately always pays more.
What matters when you compare
| Factor | Google Store trade-in | Private sale |
|---|---|---|
| Amount | Starts with the offer for the device; a mailed phone’s final value depends on inspection. | Depends on the buyer and agreed price; subtract fees and shipping to find your net amount. |
| Timing | Standard credit follows receipt and inspection. Eligible customers may be offered instant credit; store trade-in can provide same-day credit. | Depends on finding a buyer and confirming payment. |
| Effort and risk | Follow Google’s reset, condition, and shipping requirements; an adjusted or ineligible device may affect the credit. | Create a listing or arrange a sale, disclose the phone’s condition, and watch for payment and identity-verification scams. |
| Where it is available | Offers and eligibility vary by market. Check the active local offer and its terms. | Depends on the marketplace and local rules. |
If carrier unlocking affects a potential buyer, ask the original carrier about this phone’s eligibility and any remaining financing. An FCC order summarizes voluntary CTIA code commitments: participating carriers unlock postpaid phones after applicable contract or financing obligations are fulfilled; prepaid phones are to be unlocked on request no later than one year after activation, subject to conditions. This is not a universal carrier policy or an international rule. The FCC order summarizing the CTIA code provides the qualification.

2. Move your data and account access before wiping
Do not trade in, sell, or reset the old phone until you have checked that the Pixel has the content and access you need. Google’s transfer options vary by old device and Pixel. Use Google’s Pixel data-transfer guidance for the devices involved, and verify the results on the Pixel rather than assuming every item moved.
- Back up the old phone and confirm that important photos, messages, contacts, and files are available on the Pixel or in the intended backup.
- Check that you can sign in to important accounts from the Pixel. Save or transfer passwords and passkeys as needed.
- Move authenticator access to the Pixel before erasing the old phone. If your phone number will change, update accounts that use it for sign-in or recovery.
- Check whether the old phone stores messages on its SIM. Google notes that some older phones may do this, so verify before removing the SIM.
The FTC advises people preparing a phone for sale or trade-in to back it up, unlink it from online accounts and trusted-device lists, remove SIM and memory cards, and then erase it. Its phone disposal guidance covers the privacy steps, and its January 2025 upgrade alert specifically says: “And double check that your phone is no longer connected to your online accounts.”

3. Remove SIMs, unlink accounts, and reset the old phone
- Unlink accounts and trusted devices. Remove the old phone from relevant online accounts and trusted-device lists. If you rely on its number for recovery, change that first.
- Remove physical SIM and SD cards. Check the SIM for stored messages before taking it out; remove any memory card too. Do not send either card with the phone.
- Handle eSIM service. Follow your carrier’s process to transfer or remove the eSIM as appropriate. Make sure the number and service you need work on the Pixel before the old phone is erased.
- Remove screen and activation locks, then factory reset. Use the manufacturer’s reset instructions for the specific phone model. Google requires a mailed trade-in to be unlocked and factory reset; a device that is not will be returned. See Google’s mail-in trade-in instructions.
- Check the result. After the reset, confirm the phone is at its initial setup screen and does not ask for the previous user’s password. Keep any trade-in order ID and packaging instructions together if you are mailing it.
For Google mail-in trade-in, use the supplied kit and label, and do not include accessories: Google says items sent with the trade-in may be disposed of. Follow the current instructions supplied with the offer.

4. Know how Google Store trade-in works in the US
Google’s US process has three distinct routes. Terms, offers, and eligibility can change, so confirm the details attached to your Pixel order before relying on an estimated value or deadline. Google lists online trade-in markets including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States; local availability and rules differ. Google Store Help’s trade-in process details are the place to check the current program.
Standard mail-in trade-in
Google issues standard trade-in credit after it receives and inspects the old phone. Google says inspection usually occurs within five business days of arrival, and the estimate expires 30 days after the new item arrives. Sending it late may mean a lower value. If inspection finds a mismatch or condition issue, the amount may be revised under the offer’s terms.
Instant trade-in
Instant trade-in is available only to some eligible users. The estimated credit is applied at checkout, but Google can charge for that credit if it does not receive the old phone within 30 days. Check the order’s terms and send-in deadline before choosing this route.

In-store trade-in
At a Google retail store, an associate assesses the phone and provides a quote. You must hand over the old phone during that visit; Google says credit can be received the same day.

Google may revise its estimate based on the model and condition it receives. A powered-off or non-charging phone, a damaged screen or body, a locked or unreset device, a model that differs from the one on the order, a late shipment, or a phone reported lost or stolen can affect the trade-in outcome. Review the condition criteria before shipping, and make sure the model you send matches the offer.

Do not mail a phone with a damaged or swollen battery. Google warns: “Important: Do not send in devices with damaged or swollen batteries. These devices can’t be returned for credit.” Google’s condition guidance explains this restriction; do not assume the device will be returned if you send it.
6. If you sell directly, protect the transaction
Use current, accurate photos and disclose known defects, carrier status, and whether the phone is locked. Read the marketplace’s rules and protections before agreeing to ship or meet a buyer.
The FTC warns sellers about fake payment alerts, overpayment checks, and requests for verification codes. Check that payment appears in the actual payment account, not just in an email, text, or screenshot, before handing over or shipping the phone. Never give a buyer an account verification code. See the FTC’s phone sale guidance and January 2025 upgrade alert.
