Before you trade in or sell an old console, confirm its exact model, test its condition, check which accessories the buyer requires, erase your personal data, and compare the final terms—not just the displayed offer. Requirements and values vary by buyer, device, location, and date, so use the current listing for your exact model.
1. Identify the exact model and edition
Write down the console family and model number, along with storage capacity or edition when relevant. Note which accessories you plan to include. Match those details to the buyer’s current product listing or quote before accepting an offer or shipping the device.
Amazon’s U.S. trade-in criteria require the item to match the selected title, platform, and version, including special editions. A similar-looking console may not qualify for the same listing or value. Check the exact model and edition in the Amazon trade-in item criteria.

Test the console before you rely on a quote. Confirm that it powers on and that its key functions work; test each controller and accessory you intend to include separately. Look for cracks, major damage, corrosion, heavy wear, or anything that could make the device unsafe or unusable.

GameStop says it inspects traded items and may reduce the value for cosmetic scratches, residue, dings, or wear. Its stated policy disqualifies items with smoke damage, strong odors, unsafe or unusable damage, or pests. 3. Gather the parts your buyer requires
Do not assume a console is complete just because the system itself is present. The required list varies by buyer and model. GameStop’s FAQ lists the original controller, power cable, HDMI cable, and other included cords or chargers for consoles; missing components may lower the value or lead to rejection. Amazon’s U.S. criteria call for accessories originally included with the item, as applicable. That can include controllers, HDMI, power, and charging cables, adapters, and—when included with the model—docks, grips, straps, and remotes. An incomplete item may be downgraded or rejected. Check the current listing for the exact model in Amazon’s trade-in criteria.
If a required cable or adapter is missing, compare the cost of an exact compatible replacement with the likely change in the offer before buying one. Verify the connector and console model. Having the part does not guarantee acceptance or a higher final payment.

4. Back up and erase your data
Back up anything you want to keep, follow the platform maker’s directions to remove or deregister accounts, and then perform the model’s actual data-erasing reset before handing the device over. Do not rely on an option that only restores default settings.
Sony states that “Resetting your PS5 console or initializing your PS4 console deletes user and game data as well as any personalized settings.” The deletion cannot be undone. Sony distinguishes this from restoring default settings, which does not erase user or game data. Follow the official PlayStation reset instructions for your console.

GameStop’s trade terms disclaim claims relating to device contents, data, and personal data. Do not assume a buyer will remove or protect your information for you; read the applicable terms at GameStop’s terms of use.
5. Compare the real proceeds and terms
Look up a current offer for your exact model, then compare what you would actually receive through trade-in with a realistic private-sale amount after fees, shipping, time, and risk. Cash and store credit are not interchangeable, and a displayed quote may change after inspection.
