Before switching to fiber, confirm service at your exact address, compare the plan’s full price and performance, check equipment and installation details, and arrange activation before canceling your current internet. The FCC National Broadband Map is a useful starting point in the U.S., but only the provider can confirm that it will install the service you want at your location.

1. Confirm fiber is available at your exact address

Start with the FCC National Broadband Map. Search the complete service address and check which providers report serving it, the reported technology, and the maximum advertised speeds. The map covers U.S. locations and shows reported availability for fiber, cable, DSL, satellite, and fixed wireless.

Treat a listing as a lead, not an installation promise. The map is based on provider-submitted data, which the FCC verifies and updates using provider information, location updates, and public input. A green location point means an ISP reported service as available; it does not guarantee that your address qualifies for a particular plan or that installation will be straightforward. Data are filed twice a year, and the map has an as-of date selector, so check the data vintage when comparing locations. If the information appears wrong, the map provides a challenge process.

Before ordering, use the provider’s own address checker and ask it to confirm eligibility, the specific plan, the installation date, and any construction or installation charges. Get important details in the order confirmation.

2. Compare the full price, not just the promotion

Find the provider’s FCC Broadband Facts label for the plan, then read the linked terms and order summary. The label is designed to make important plan details easier to compare, but the final amount can still depend on taxes, optional services, discounts, and contract terms.

What to compare What to verify
Monthly price Introductory price, how long it lasts, and the regular rate afterward.
Contract Whether a term is required, how long it lasts, and any applicable early termination fee.
Provider and one-time charges Recurring fees and installation, activation, equipment, deposit, or other one-time charges.
Taxes and optional services Taxes that may vary by location, plus any add-ons included in the order.
Discount conditions Autopay, paperless billing, bundles, or customer-owned equipment requirements—and the price if a discount ends.
Data allowance Included usage and any extra-data charge or service reduction.

Compare the new offer with your current bill and the old provider’s cancellation terms. Ask whether the current provider prorates a final bill or charges through a full billing cycle; do not assume the answer is the same across providers.

3. Match performance to your household’s use

Compare typical download speed, typical upload speed, and latency on each plan’s label. Download speed matters for streaming and downloads, while upload speed can matter for video calls, sending large files, and multiple people working or creating content at once. Latency can matter for interactive uses such as online gaming and real-time calls. Choose based on how your household uses the connection rather than download speed alone.

The FCC map reports maximum advertised speeds submitted by providers for locations; those figures are not a guarantee of the experience in an individual home. The plan label’s typical speeds and latency provide a different comparison point. Ask the provider what service and performance it offers at your address, and keep the answer with the order details.

4. Check equipment and installation before buying anything

Ask the provider what it will install and what you need to supply. A fiber setup may include an optical network terminal (ONT), gateway, and/or router, but the arrangement and supported configurations vary by provider. Confirm:

  • Whether an ONT, gateway, and router are included, rented, or charged separately.
  • Whether you may use your own router, and which connection type and configuration it must support.
  • Whether using your own equipment changes the price or qualifies you for a discount.
  • Where the ONT or gateway can be placed and whether a new cable route or drilling is expected.
  • Whether an adult must be present, whether installation is included, and what extra construction could cost.

Check the label for disclosed equipment charges and any linked pricing or discount options, then confirm the specific setup with the provider. There is no single router or other consumer device that is a safe universal purchase for every fiber installation. Wait for the provider’s requirements before buying hardware.

5. Coordinate activation and cancellation

To reduce the risk of a service gap, arrange and confirm the new installation and activation before ending the old connection when practical. Provider procedures differ, so follow both companies’ terms rather than relying on a universal switching process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Place and verify the new order. Confirm the exact address, plan, installation date, charges, and equipment in the order confirmation.
  2. Check the old account’s terms. Review its billing cycle, notice requirements, remaining contract obligation, cancellation method, equipment-return deadline, and how it confirms receipt.
  3. Arrange installation and activation. Confirm what access or preparation is needed and when the new connection should be active.
  4. Test the new service. Check that it works for your household before canceling the old service, if timing and contract terms allow.
  5. Close the old account and return equipment. Keep the cancellation confirmation and equipment-return receipt.

Keep the labels, bills, order confirmations, support messages, cancellation records, and return receipts. After activation, compare the first bill with the label and order confirmation. If an issue persists, first contact the provider using the support path on your label or order documents. The FCC consumer complaint center accepts internet complaints categorized under topics including availability, billing, equipment, privacy, and speed or latency.

6. Don’t count on the expired ACP discount

The FCC says the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) and its monthly broadband discount ended June 1, 2024. Do not include ACP in a current plan comparison. The FCC also warns that some websites may still advertise enrollment and could collect personal information, so avoid submitting sensitive details to a site claiming to enroll consumers in the ended program.
