Before switching phone carriers, compare the full cost of equivalent plans, check coverage where you use your phone, confirm your handset will work on the new network, and find out what you still owe your current carrier. If you want to keep your number, ask the new carrier to transfer it and keep your old service active until the transfer is complete.
Compare the full cost, not just the advertised monthly price
Start with the same number of lines and a similar pattern of use. Compare what your household is likely to pay, including recurring charges, taxes, surcharges, and any activation or setup fee. These are common categories on wireless bills; see the FCC’s wireless billing and rates information. The CFPB’s family cell phone plan worksheet also prompts consumers to weigh plan features and fees against a budget.
- Recurring cost: Compare the estimated total for all lines, not a single-line starting price.
- One-time cost: Include activation or setup charges.
- Current-account obligations: Add any remaining device payments, contract termination charge, or promotional credits that may end when you leave. Get the terms and payoff amount from your current carrier.
- Plan differences: Compare data allowances and rules, hotspot use, international service, streaming, and other features you actually use.
To estimate savings over a period you choose, use: (current comparable monthly total − new comparable monthly total) × number of months − one-time switching costs. This is a calculation framework, not a promise of savings: your result depends on your bill, outstanding obligations, and the exact terms of both plans.
Check coverage in the places you actually use your phone
Compare the prospective carrier’s coverage information with the FCC National Broadband Map for home, work, your commute, and places you visit often. FCC mobile coverage layers show expected connectivity outdoors or in a moving vehicle; they do not establish indoor coverage. Actual service can differ with your phone, network capacity, terrain, and the assumptions used to create coverage estimates. Treat maps as a starting point, not a guarantee. If available, consider a trial period or ask people who use that network in the places that matter to you.

Confirm your phone is unlocked and compatible
Keeping your existing handset may avoid the cost of buying another one, but an unlocked phone is not automatically compatible with every carrier. Check the precise model—not just the brand or product family—with the new provider, and confirm its unlocking status with your current carrier. The FCC Consumer Inquiries and Complaints Center points consumers to information about unlocking and technical compatibility. The required SIM type and activation method depend on the specific phone and provider, so verify those details before switching.
Find out what you still owe before leaving
Read your latest bill and agreement, then ask your current carrier for an account-specific breakdown of device installments, any contract termination charge, and what happens to promotional credits if you switch. Transferring your number does not erase outstanding balances or other agreement obligations. The FCC’s Local Number Portability FAQs describe this general principle; because that FAQ is old, confirm current charges and steps directly with the carriers. A carrier generally may not refuse a valid number port solely because you owe money, but the debt or fee can still remain due.

Transfer your number in the right order
If you want to keep your number and are staying in the same geographic area, FCC consumer guidance says you can generally transfer it to a new provider. Start the process with the new carrier, not by cancelling your existing service. Keep the old service active until the port is complete, because a cancelled or deactivated number can put your ability to retain it at risk. Have your current account information and a recent bill available to help avoid mismatches or delays. Ask the new carrier what information it needs and when the old account will close. See the FCC’s number-porting guidance.

Protect your cellular account during the switch
Use available security controls, such as a PIN or password on your cellular account, to help protect against unauthorized changes. The FTC explains this measure in its guidance on SIM scams. Contact both carriers through official channels you already know or can independently verify. The availability and details of carrier-specific port-out protections vary, so ask your provider what account safeguards it offers.

Make a side-by-side decision
Before placing an order, put the current and prospective plans next to each other and fill in the details for your household. The CFPB worksheet can help structure a comparison around budget, data, streaming, coverage, features, and fees.
| What to compare | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Expected bill | Total recurring cost for all lines, including taxes and surcharges |
| Switching costs | Activation or setup fees, device payoff, lost credits, and any contract exit charge |
| Coverage | Service at home, work, on the commute, and during frequent travel; distinguish map estimates from indoor experience |
| Plan features | Data amount and rules, hotspot, international use, streaming, and other features your household needs |
| Phone readiness | Unlock status, precise-model compatibility, SIM type, and activation method |
| Number transfer | Information required, transfer status, and when the old account will close |
FCC Commissioner Anna M. Gomez wrote in a 2024 statement in the FCC’s handset-unlocking proceeding: “Consumers who can afford to purchase an unlocked phone outright have the freedom to choose and switch between providers as they please.” That is a policy statement about consumer choice, not a guarantee that every unlocked handset will work on every network.
