Before starting a college fantasy quarterback, compare your league’s scoring and lineup rules, the player’s availability and role, his passing and rushing opportunities, the matchup, and the likely game environment. Use the same checklist for every candidate, then recheck late news and your lineup lock time before kickoff. No single matchup rank or projection can settle the decision by itself.
1. Start with your league’s scoring and lineup rules
A quarterback’s fantasy value depends on what your league rewards and penalizes. Check your current league settings before comparing players, including roster eligibility and when lineups lock.
- Points for passing touchdowns and passing yardage
- Penalties for interceptions and lost fumbles
- Points for rushing yards and rushing touchdowns
- Whether receiving production counts for your rostered quarterback
- Any eligibility rules or player-team deadline that affects lineup changes
Rules vary by league and platform. For example, College Football Fantasy’s rules page lists four points per passing touchdown, one point per 25 passing yards, and a one-point penalty for an interception or lost fumble, while also counting rushing and receiving production. CBS Sports’ rules illustrate that platforms can use different conditions, including an FBS-versus-non-FBS scoring adjustment and a player-team kickoff deadline. Treat these as examples, not defaults: use your own league’s current rules. College Football Fantasy rules and CBS Sports college fantasy rules.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2. Confirm the player is available and has a secure role
Check who is expected to start, whether the team is rotating quarterbacks, and whether recent snaps support a full-game role. A player listed as QB1 is useful context, but it does not guarantee a particular workload or that he will finish the game. Recheck injury and availability information as kickoff approaches.

There is a specific availability-report process for the 2025–26 College Football Playoff: participating schools must provide public reports, with daily updates and a final report 90 minutes before game time. That policy applies to CFP games in that season, not every regular-season matchup. 2025–26 CFP student-athlete availability reporting.

3. Compare opportunity, not just last week’s points
Look at what the quarterback is being asked to do: passing attempts and production, rushing volume, and any receiving involvement that your league scores. Last week’s fantasy total records what happened; opportunity helps you judge whether the player has a role that can produce again.
Rushing can materially change the comparison when your rules reward rushing yards or touchdowns. A quarterback with designed carries or regular scrambles may have a different path to fantasy points from a pocket passer. CollegeFFB says its projection model considers usage such as rushing volume and receiving involvement, because the same box-score yardage can come from different levels of opportunity. 4. Use opponent data as context, not a verdict
Check how the opponent has performed against quarterbacks, but don’t treat a points-against rank as a forecast on its own. Consider how many games the number covers, the quality of the opponents, and whether your candidate’s current role resembles the quarterbacks behind that data.
Yahoo provides position-specific college fantasy points-against data, while CollegeFFB describes adjusting player baselines for opponent strength. These are useful inputs to a comparison, not guarantees of what one quarterback will score. Yahoo’s QB points-against data and CollegeFFB’s methodology.

5. Consider how the game could unfold
Think about whether the team is expected to score and whether the matchup could become one-sided. A likely lead or deficit can change passing volume, rushing chances, and how long a starter remains involved. Game totals and point spreads can offer clues about expected scoring and script, but they are estimates—not certainties—and should not outweigh evidence about the player’s role. CollegeFFB says it uses game totals and spreads as additional signals in its projections. CollegeFFB’s projection inputs.
6. Compare candidates on the same checklist
When choosing between two quarterbacks, evaluate both on the same terms rather than letting one appealing matchup or last-week total dominate. A simple comparison keeps the decision tied to your league and the information available:

If you consult rankings or projections, compare candidates relatively or use a range where the source provides one. CollegeFFB describes its rankings and projections as estimates that change as information changes; they are useful for comparing options, not promises of exact scores. Its service describes a projection context covering “137 FBS teams”—the service’s own description, not an independently verified count of all FBS schools. CollegeFFB rankings and projections methodology.
7. Recheck before lineup lock
Make one final pass close to kickoff: confirm the expected starter and availability, revisit role or opponent updates, and verify your league’s lock time. Information can change during the week, and CollegeFFB says its rankings update as injuries and other information change. College Football Fantasy’s rules page also notes, “Each scoring week has its own game dates,” a reminder to check the dates that apply to your league rather than assume every scoring period follows the same schedule. College Football Fantasy rules.
For a weekly start/sit decision, the useful question is not simply which quarterback scored more last week. It is which candidate best fits your scoring, has the clearest available role and opportunity, and has the more favorable set of matchup and game-environment signals based on what is known before kickoff. Yahoo’s weekly college fantasy advice uses “Start ’Em, Sit ’Em” and “Start/Sit” phrasing for this kind of choice. Yahoo’s Week 3 college fantasy start/sit article.
