Before setting out, check the entire route from your actual starting point to the destination entrance—not just a map’s “wheelchair accessible” label. Confirm that each sidewalk, crossing, curb ramp, transit connection, elevator, and entrance is usable for the traveler and available at the time of the trip. U.S. ADA standards offer useful measurements, but they do not guarantee that a particular route will work for every person or reflect current conditions.

Check the complete route, not just the destination

Trace the journey as a continuous chain: from the starting door or drop-off point to the sidewalk, along the route to any transit stop, through each transfer, and from the final stop to the destination’s actual entrance. A route can fail at any link, even when the destination or transit service has an accessibility label.

The U.S. Access Board’s ADA standards describe accessible-route components such as walking surfaces, doorways, ramps, curb ramps, elevators, and platform lifts. The 2010 ADA Standards also address connections in covered settings between public streets and sidewalks, transit stops, accessible arrival points, and building entrances. These are U.S. references; applicable requirements may differ elsewhere.

Inspect the features that affect whether each segment works

Surface, width, and room to maneuver

Look for a firm, stable, slip-resistant surface and a clear path wide enough for the traveler and their wheelchair. The Access Board’s guide says an accessible route generally has 36 inches of continuous clear width, subject to limited exceptions; turning and passing may require additional space. Check for obstructions, narrow pinch points, uneven transitions, or places where a user cannot turn or pass safely.

Slopes and changes in level

Under the U.S. ADA standards, walking surfaces on accessible routes generally have a maximum running slope of 1:20 (5%). Ramps generally have a maximum running slope of 1:12, and ramp cross slope generally has a maximum of 1:48. The Access Board describes these as design criteria—not a personal assessment of whether an incline is manageable for a particular traveler, chair, or set of conditions.

Also check changes in level, ramp landings, and the transition between a curb ramp and the sidewalk or crossing. A steep or awkward transition can make an otherwise continuous route difficult to use.

Crossings, curb ramps, and vertical connections

At every street crossing, verify that curb ramps and connecting sidewalks are present and usable. Include any lift or elevator in the route, especially when it is needed for a transit transfer or to reach the destination entrance. A missing connection, a blocked ramp, or an out-of-service elevator can break the chain.

Use the map to identify possible routes and questions to verify, rather than treating a route result or place label as proof that every segment has been surveyed or is passable today. If the entrance or a particular feature matters, contact the venue and ask about the specific entrance and the path from the sidewalk or drop-off point.

Confirm conditions that can change

Standards and map details do not establish the current status of an elevator, lift, sidewalk, or transit route. Before travel, check with the relevant transit agency or venue for elevator and lift availability, service changes, construction, and blocked paths. For a critical connection, seek a current confirmation rather than relying only on general route information.
