Before opening a GIFT City account, confirm your eligibility and funding route, identify the exact asset you will own, and map the firms that execute trades and hold assets. A GIFT City offering may involve a depositary receipt, an international brokerage service, or a managed fund—not necessarily direct ownership of U.S. shares.
First, confirm your residency status and funding route
Your FEMA status and the product’s eligibility rules affect whether you can use a particular GIFT City route and how you may fund it. Under IFSCA’s portfolio-manager rules, an individual resident in India must be eligible under FEMA, and the investment is limited to the amount permitted under the Reserve Bank of India’s Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS).
Before sending money, ask your bank and provider to confirm in writing which remittance purpose and documents apply, how much of your LRS allowance the transfer uses, and how your other overseas remittances count toward the applicable limit. Check the current RBI directions and your remaining allowance rather than relying on a provider’s general reference to LRS.
Find out exactly what you will own
“U.S. stocks through GIFT City” can describe different legal and operational arrangements. The instrument determines what your account represents, how you receive statements and corporate-action notices, and what questions to ask about custody and exit. Do not assume that a product gives you the same ownership rights as shares held in a U.S. brokerage account.

| Route | What the cited provider describes | What to verify before opening |
|---|---|---|
| NSE IFSC Receipts | Anand Rathi describes unsponsored depositary receipts based on selected U.S.-listed underlying shares, listed and settled in GIFT City. It describes a demat account and corporate-action handling. | Receipt issuer and underlying custodian; the current underlying-stock list; how receipts relate to the underlying shares; voting and corporate-action processes; fractional-unit rules; transfer and exit mechanics; and all charges. |
| Global Access Provider route | Geojit describes an introducing-broker model. The Global Access Provider and its partners perform execution, custody, clearing, and settlement; Geojit says it does not perform those functions for the investments. | Legal name and jurisdiction of each firm; whether you acquire shares or another instrument; custody location and account title; available assets and order types; funding and withdrawal process; statements and tax records; and where to raise a dispute. |
| Managed fund | DSP describes a global-equity product offered through an IFSC retail FME and says it is currently available only to HDFC bank account holders. | Current eligibility; portfolio and benchmark; fund and underlying expenses; dealing and redemption terms; applicable fund and investor tax treatment; and whether the product is still available. |
These are provider descriptions, not interchangeable products or endorsements. Confirm the current offering and read the documents for the specific account you are considering.
Map the firms that handle your money and assets
A brand that introduces or services an account may not be the firm that executes trades or holds assets. Ask for the legal names and roles of every firm in the chain, including the broker, Global Access Provider, custodian, clearing and settlement entities, and any international partner. For a fund, identify the fund manager and the entities responsible for fund assets and recordkeeping.

- As a day trader, you can live and work anywhere in the world. You can decide when to work and when not to work.
- You only answer to yourself. That is the life of the successful day trader. Many people aspire to it, but very few succeed. Day trading is not gambling or an online poker game.
- To be successful at day trading you need the right tools and you need to be motivated, to work hard, and to persevere.
Then match each role to the account paperwork. Check where the assets are held, the name on the custody or recordkeeping account, which entity issues your statements, and which firm is responsible for each step from order placement to settlement and withdrawal. Geojit’s description of its introducing-broker role is a useful reminder to distinguish the provider you contact from the entities performing those functions.

Calculate the full cost for your intended use
Do not compare accounts using only a headline brokerage charge. Request the current tariff and check the costs that apply to your particular product and transfer. A practical estimate should cover a buy, a holding period that includes any dividend or corporate action, and a sale.

Check the onboarding requirements and account documents
Get the exact KYC checklist for your investor category and product. For its receipt onboarding, Anand Rathi lists PAN, masked Aadhaar, bank proof, signature, nominee PAN, and a W-8BEN form. That provider-specific list should not be treated as the requirement for every GIFT City account; confirm what applies to your route.

- Comes with Proper Binding
Before signing, obtain and read the current account agreement, custody terms, fee schedule, and relevant product or fund documents. Also ask for the following in writing:
- How dividends, corporate actions, and other investor notices are handled.
- What statements and tax records you will receive, and when.
- How to withdraw funds or transfer investments, including expected timelines and restrictions.
- Which team handles errors and complaints, and what regulator complaint mechanism applies.
- What the documents say about custody, customer assets, and what happens if a provider or other firm in the chain becomes insolvent.
Do not treat product tax descriptions as personal tax advice
An exchange-level description of taxes or transaction charges does not establish your individual income-tax outcome. Your treatment may depend on your tax residence and on whether you hold a receipt, shares through an international account, or fund units. The cited provider and regulatory descriptions do not settle an individual’s tax, reporting, or estate consequences, or establish provider-specific insolvency and investor-asset protection rights.

For cross-border tax or reporting questions, consult an appropriately qualified adviser using the exact product documents and your personal circumstances. Avoid relying on broad claims such as “tax-free” or assuming that a particular protection applies without confirming it in the governing documents.
