Before moving your family to a new phone carrier, verify coverage at the places you use service, the total cost for every line, and whether each phone and connected device will work. Then confirm transfer requirements and keep your old service active until the new carrier confirms each number has moved.
Check coverage where your family uses phones
Look beyond a carrier’s nationwide coverage claim. Check the prospective carrier’s coverage at home, school, work, regular travel routes, and places your family visits. Coverage maps are a starting point, not a guarantee of service in a particular building or on a particular route.
Available service and speed can depend on the exact phone and the network technology in an area. Cricket, for example, says speeds vary with device capabilities and local network technology, and that 4G LTE is not available everywhere (Cricket coverage information). Carrier-owned coverage pages describe their own networks; they do not establish how networks compare in real-world conditions.

Compare the expected recurring total for the exact number of lines, not just the advertised price of one line. Include the required plan, taxes and fees, optional features, device payments, and any separate plans for tablets, watches, or hotspots. Check the current account for accrued charges, device balances, and any early-termination charge that may apply under its terms.

Keep promotions separate from the regular monthly price. For each offer, record the qualifying plan, port-in or trade-in requirements, autopay conditions, credit schedule, taxes and fees, and how long you must remain eligible to receive the full value. Monthly bill credits are not necessarily an immediate discount. Offers and prices change, so confirm the current terms with the carrier when you are ready to switch. The reviewed carrier pages show plan-specific terms, not a deal that applies to every family (Verizon plan information; Google Fi plan information).
As one dated, carrier-specific example, Verizon’s Family Plus FAQ lists a $10 monthly perk for certain eligible plans and a $14.99 monthly standard retail price for other qualifying accounts, following plan changes dated May 7, 2026. Check every phone and connected device
Unlock and test each phone
A phone locked to its current carrier may be restricted from use on another carrier until it is unlocked. Ask the current carrier about unlocking each device, then use the prospective carrier’s IMEI checker to verify compatibility. Check each phone’s exact model rather than assuming a similar-looking phone will work. Compatibility depends on the device and the network capabilities needed in the places you use service. Verizon explains its lock and compatibility requirements (Verizon bring-your-own-device guidance), and T-Mobile provides checks for IMEI compatibility and lock status (T-Mobile bring-your-own-phone guidance).
Do not buy replacement phones solely because you are changing carriers. First check each current phone with the new carrier. T-Mobile says some incompatible phones may need an upgrade, but a compatible phone can be brought over without buying a new one (T-Mobile bring-your-own-phone guidance).

Include watches, tablets, and other lines
Make an inventory of every connected device and service, including tablets, hotspots, watches, and family safety services. Note which devices have their own phone number, data plan, or account feature, and whether that feature is tied to a specific carrier plan. Plan types can differ by device: Cricket distinguishes phone voice plans from data-only plans for other devices (Cricket data-only plan information).
Compare the features your family actually uses
Check whether each carrier supports the family’s needs for parental controls, child-line settings, location sharing, spam blocking, hotspot use, and roaming. Verify which plan, device, or operating system is required; a feature listed by a carrier may not be included with every plan or work on every phone.

For example, Google Fi describes spam blocking, family location sharing, and child settings on Android devices (Google Fi family features). Verizon’s Family Plus terms specify eligible mobile plans and device requirements (Verizon Family Plus FAQ). Compare the terms against the devices and account controls your household needs rather than treating a feature name as proof that it is included.

Compare carriers using the same household checklist
For a useful comparison, evaluate each option against the same family profile and line count. Use a table or notes so that a low advertised price does not obscure a missing feature or device incompatibility.

No single carrier is established as the best choice for every family. Coverage, plan terms, and available features vary; compare the options against your actual locations, devices, and usage.
Prepare the number transfers before switching
Confirm that each number is eligible to transfer and ask the new carrier what information it requires. Requirements vary, but you may need the current carrier’s name, account number, account PIN or number-transfer PIN, and the phone number for each line. Back up contacts, voicemail, and text messages before starting. A number transfer does not replace a backup of information stored on a device or in an account.
- Gather account details. Find the existing carrier’s account number and the transfer PIN or other credentials required for each line.
- Start the transfer with the new carrier. Follow its process for each number and provide the requested account information.
- Keep the old service active. Do not cancel the old account while numbers are still transferring.
- Confirm every line has moved. Check that each number works on the new service before treating the transfer as complete.
T-Mobile warns that dual service may occur for up to 24 hours during its transfer process and tells customers not to cancel the previous service before receiving confirmation. Its instruction is specific to T-Mobile: “Please do not cancel your previous wireless service until you receive a confirmation text message from T-Mobile saying that the number transfer is complete” (T-Mobile transfer guidance).
Check what remains on the old account
Moving a number does not automatically erase obligations to the previous carrier. Verizon says transfers to Verizon have no transfer fee on its service, while early-termination charges or remaining device-payment balances from the old carrier may still apply. That is Verizon’s policy statement, not a universal rule; review the current carrier’s account and terms for your situation (Verizon number transfer FAQ).
