Before moving an AI model to another GPU, NPU, TPU, or other inference accelerator, validate the entire destination stack—not just whether the operating system can see a device. Freeze a known-good baseline, confirm framework and operator support, determine whether artifacts must be converted or rebuilt, compare outputs at the intended precision, benchmark the real service workload, and prove deployment and rollback behavior.
There is no vendor-neutral compatibility promise. The exact accelerator, host, operating system, drivers, runtime, framework build, compiler or inference engine, and serving layer determine what will work. Use the chosen platform’s current support matrix and test the model you actually deploy.
Why an accelerator migration is more than a hardware swap
An inference request passes through several layers: model weights and graph, preprocessing, framework, backend, compiler or engine, runtime, driver, operating system, host memory, device memory, and serving software. A replacement device can be visible to the host while an operator, data type, kernel, or serialized engine remains unsupported.

PyTorch’s documentation describes runtime availability this way: “Check if the current accelerator is available at runtime: it was built, all the required drivers are available and at least one device is visible.” That check answers only whether a backend can access a device. It does not prove that your model graph, precision, or service will run efficiently.

Plan the work as a controlled comparison between two complete stacks. Keep the model and workload constant long enough to identify what changed, then vary one optimization at a time.
1. Freeze a reproducible baseline
Start with the currently deployed system, not a developer laptop. Capture enough information that another engineer can reproduce both the old result and the migration decision.
Record the model and input contract
- Model architecture, checkpoint or exported-graph version, and cryptographic hash of every artifact.
- Tokenizer, feature extraction, normalization, image resizing, audio framing, or other preprocessing versions.
- Postprocessing rules, decoding parameters, confidence thresholds, and output schema.
- Supported input shapes, sequence-length limits, dynamic dimensions, and the production distribution of those shapes.
- Expected outputs for a representative sample, including edge cases and failure responses.
- Current precision, quantization scheme, calibration data, sparsity settings, and any custom kernels or extensions.
Record service behavior
- Request-rate distribution, batch-size policy, concurrent requests, and number of model instances.
- Latency objectives by percentile, throughput target, memory limits, startup deadline, and time-to-first-token or inter-token objectives for generative services.
- Warm-up procedure, autoscaling rules, health checks, timeout and retry behavior, and the current rollback method.
- Steady-state device memory, host memory, power or thermal constraints where they affect capacity.
Save a baseline report with the exact accelerator, host, operating system, driver, runtime, framework, backend, serving configuration, and measurement date. Keep a known-good output set and representative input corpus; these become your correctness and performance reference.
2. Name the exact destination stack
Write down the destination as a concrete bill of materials. “A newer GPU” or “an NPU” is not specific enough for compatibility testing.

| Layer | What to identify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Device | Accelerator model, memory size, form factor, partitioning or virtualization mode | Instruction set, memory capacity, and supported features vary by device and mode. |
| Host | CPU, RAM, PCIe or interconnect topology, firmware, and operating system | Data movement, driver support, and available address space can limit performance. |
| Software | Driver, device runtime, framework build, compiler, inference engine, and serving layer versions | Support is defined by particular combinations, not by a product name alone. |
| Deployment | Container or package versions, orchestration settings, permissions, and observability agents | A model that works interactively can fail in the production image or sandbox. |
Consult the target platform’s current compatibility matrix for this exact combination. Do not infer that framework support for one accelerator implies support for another. PyTorch’s accelerator API makes availability dependent on a backend being built, required drivers being present, and at least one visible device. Its MPS documentation also shows why target-specific prerequisites matter: operating-system and device requirements, supported operations, and data-type limitations can differ from other backends. The MPS page was updated May 11, 2026, and the accelerator documentation was updated June 19, 2026; check the current versions when you perform your migration.
Run a minimal discovery test in the same environment as the service. For a PyTorch deployment, an availability call such as torch.accelerator.is_available() can establish that the runtime sees a usable backend. Follow it by allocating a tensor, executing a small representative operation, and checking that the intended device—not an unintended CPU path—is being used.
3. Audit model, operator, and data-type coverage
Inventory the complete graph rather than checking only the model’s headline architecture.
Check every operation on the critical path
- Standard layers and activation functions, including unusual normalization, sampling, indexing, scatter, gather, and reduction operations.
- Attention variants, rotary or relative position operations, recurrent components, and dynamic control flow in sequence models.
- Custom C++, CUDA, vendor, or framework extensions; fused kernels; and plugins loaded by the serving process.
- Preprocessing and postprocessing operations that may execute inside the exported graph.
- Dynamic shapes, variable sequence lengths, ragged inputs, and shape-dependent branches.
- Collective communication or multi-device requirements for sharding, tensor parallelism, or pipeline parallelism.
Verify precision and quantization support
For each operation, confirm support for the intended FP32, FP16, BF16, INT8, or other format. Check accumulation precision, calibration requirements, per-channel or per-tensor rules, and whether a quantized operator is implemented natively or decomposed into slower pieces.

ExecuTorch documents that backends have their own hardware requirements and model/operator coverage. Unsupported operators may fall back to the CPU. A fallback can preserve functional execution while adding transfers, synchronization, and latency that invalidate the migration’s performance goal. Determine whether an unsupported operation causes export failure, compilation failure, a CPU fallback, or a slower device implementation, and measure the consequence.
Test representative shapes
Compile and run the smallest and largest production-relevant shapes, not just one convenient example. Include empty or short sequences, maximum context, unusual image dimensions, long audio clips, and any shape that triggers a different graph branch. A backend can support an operator for one shape or layout but reject another.
4. Decide whether artifacts can be reused
Separate portable inputs from hardware-specific outputs. Original weights may be reusable while an exported graph, compiled kernel cache, or serialized inference engine is not.
Classify the artifact you have
| Artifact | Questions to answer | Likely action |
|---|---|---|
| Original checkpoint | Can the destination framework load the format, layout, and dtypes? | Load directly or export through a reproducible script. |
| Framework graph or interchange file | Are all operators, dynamic dimensions, and custom extensions supported? | Validate, rewrite unsupported nodes, or export again. |
| Compiled engine or binary | Which runtime version, device capability, driver, and build flags were used? | Reuse only after deserialization and correctness tests; otherwise rebuild. |
| Quantized package | Which calibration data, scales, layouts, and kernels are encoded? | Recalibrate or reconvert if the backend requires a different scheme. |
Keep conversion and compilation in source control. Record toolchain versions, flags, optimization profiles, calibration data hashes, shape profiles, and environment image digests. A build that succeeds only on one workstation is not a migration plan.

NVIDIA TensorRT’s engine-compatibility documentation illustrates the risk: deserialization checks can require matching runtime and GPU capabilities. Compatibility options can broaden where an engine runs, but may reduce performance in some circumstances. Treat a serialized engine as a build output with explicit compatibility metadata, not as a universally portable model.
NVIDIA’s production workflow also separates conversion, precision selection, post-conversion accuracy validation, workload testing, and serving configuration. Keep those stages separate so a speed change cannot hide a conversion-induced accuracy change.
5. Validate correctness before optimizing speed
Run the old and new stacks on the same frozen corpus before tuning batch size or compiler flags. Include ordinary traffic, boundary values, malformed-but-accepted inputs, and cases known to be numerically sensitive.

Compare outputs at the application level
- For classification or detection, compare labels, scores, ranking, and threshold decisions—not only raw tensors.
- For regression, calculate error against the baseline with tolerances justified by the application’s risk.
- For generative models, compare token selections under deterministic settings, log-probability behavior where available, and task-level evaluation; stochastic output alone is not evidence of a regression.
- Check output shape, dtype, ordering, masks, metadata, and error handling.
Set tolerances before looking at results, and document why they are acceptable. Re-run the comparison after every export, compiler, driver, precision, quantization, or backend change. A successful engine load and plausible-looking output do not establish parity. NVIDIA explicitly places accuracy validation after conversion in its workflow; adopt the same gate for any backend.

6. Benchmark the real service workload
Use the same model artifact, preprocessing, input distribution, output requirements, and traffic pattern on both stacks. Warm up each system according to its normal deployment process, then measure enough steady-state requests to capture variability.
Measure what the service promises
- Latency percentiles such as p50, p95, and p99, including queueing and host-to-device transfers.
- Throughput at the concurrency levels users actually generate.
- Device and host memory, utilization, thermal throttling, and power limits when relevant to capacity.
- Startup, model-load, compilation, and first-request times.
- Failure rate, timeout rate, and behavior when the device is saturated.
- For language-model services, time to first token, inter-token latency, completed tokens per second, and effects of context length.
Vary the important knobs deliberately
Run a matrix of batch sizes, concurrent model instances, sequence or image shapes, and precision choices. NVIDIA recommends testing batch size and concurrent instances in its Triton production workflow. Its NIM guidance identifies architecture compatibility, quantization format, and performance characteristics as backend-selection factors; treat these as experiment dimensions, not promises that a result transfers to another model or device.
For every run, record the model and tokenizer hashes, input and output profile, accelerator, driver and runtime, framework and backend versions, precision, batch size, concurrency, instance count, and serving settings. A benchmark without this context cannot be reproduced or fairly compared.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
7. Prove production readiness and rollback
A migration is incomplete when a benchmark is faster but the service cannot start reliably, scale, or recover.
Exercise the deployment path
- Build the production container or package from the recorded toolchain, then deploy it to hardware identical to the intended target.
- Verify permissions, device discovery, model download or mounting, compilation time, cache behavior, and health-check semantics.
- Send representative traffic through the real gateway, batching layer, queue, and observability pipeline.
- Test scale-out, scale-in, device exhaustion, process restart, host restart, and loss of a model instance.
- Confirm dashboards and alerts expose latency percentiles, throughput, memory pressure, fallback activity, errors, and capacity headroom.
- Perform a controlled rollback to the known-good stack and measure how long it takes to restore service.
Set acceptance gates from your service
Use the application’s correctness tolerances, latency SLOs, throughput requirement, memory budget, startup deadline, and recovery objective as pass/fail gates. The official sources do not define one universal threshold that applies to every accelerator or service. Do not route full production traffic to the target until those gates pass.
Compare two target accelerators consistently
When evaluating more than one destination, use a single scorecard and keep workload and configuration constant enough to isolate the hardware and software differences.
