Before you port your number or cancel T-Mobile service, check each device’s payoff balance and promotion terms, then note your billing-cycle end date and any account credit. Porting deactivates service immediately, but T-Mobile says the full billing cycle remains chargeable. Cancellation can also stop promotional credits or accelerate device payments, depending on the agreement and offer.
Check your device payments and promotions first
Use My T-Mobile to make an account-specific list before taking action. For every financed phone or other device, record its remaining Equipment Installment Plan (EIP) balance and payment schedule. Then match it to its promotion ID and credit history.
- Review the specific offer terms for any active-service requirement, cancellation rule, or installment-continuation option. T-Mobile’s Promotional Offers FAQ says outcomes vary by offer; its general guidance is not a substitute for the terms attached to your promotion.
- Note when you enrolled in each promotion. T-Mobile distinguishes early-payoff treatment for enrollments before July 1, 2024 from enrollments on or after that date.
- Save copies or screenshots of each EIP balance, promotion ID, credit history, and any support confirmation. Compare them with the final account statement.
T-Mobile’s general guidance says promotional credits usually stop when service is canceled and the remaining device balance may become due. Your agreement and offer terms determine how that applies to your devices, so confirm the result for each one rather than assuming all promotions work alike.

Paying off an EIP before leaving is not necessarily a way to preserve every remaining promotion credit. T-Mobile’s FAQ says customers who enrolled in a promotion on or after July 1, 2024 forfeit remaining monthly recurring device credits if they pay off the EIP early. For earlier enrollments, the FAQ describes credits continuing as account-level credits after payoff. Check the applicable agreement and offer terms before paying; the enrollment date and promotion both matter.

Ask about installment continuation before canceling
Some customers may be able to continue monthly device installments after cancellation, but this is not a universal option. T-Mobile’s 2026 past-offers page describes certain eligible customers needing to contact CARE before canceling or within 60 days after cancellation. Confirm whether that exception applies to your particular device and offer, and ask what action or deadline is required. Do not rely on the 60-day window for other promotions.
Account for the full billing cycle after porting
T-Mobile’s Terms & Conditions say service is deactivated immediately once you port your number to another carrier, but the full billing cycle is still charged. Check your billing-cycle end date before choosing when to switch, and do not expect a prorated final service bill under these terms.

Also check for subscriptions or other services billed through T-Mobile. The terms say cancellation may affect linked services, so identify anything you may need to move, cancel separately, or continue paying for.
Review the final bill and any account credit
After cancellation and final account reconciliation, T-Mobile says it will attempt to refund an eligible overpayment credit to the original payment method. If that cannot be processed, it may refund the balance another way. An eligible final credit below $1 is refunded only if you request it.

Review the final statement against your saved device and promotion records. If an expected credit or refund is missing, contact T-Mobile and refer to the account details and any support confirmation you saved.

- Promotion credits that may stop or be forfeited, versus any credits your offer allows to continue.
- The full-cycle service charge tied to your port-out timing.
- Any final account credit or linked service that needs separate follow-up.
The public terms cannot show your private EIP balances, promotion enrollment dates, eligibility, or final reconciliation amount. Verify those details in My T-Mobile or directly with T-Mobile before canceling.
