Before creating an account, verify what the service collects and shares, who can see or find you by default, which safety and security controls you can use, whether you are legally eligible, and how to delete the account later. These details vary by platform, country and age group, so check the specific service rather than relying on assumptions.
Start with a go-or-no-go check
Spend a few minutes on the service’s privacy notice, terms and settings screens before entering personal information. You should be able to answer the questions below with specific evidence from the service. If an answer is missing or the explanation leaves an important risk unresolved, postpone registration or choose a different service.
| Question | What to inspect | Decision signal |
|---|---|---|
| Who operates the service? | The organisation named in the privacy notice and terms, including any relevant contact details. | You can identify the responsible organisation and contact it about your data. |
| What data is collected? | Required and optional fields, device data, contacts, location, activity, photographs and information inferred about you. | Collection is proportionate to the service, and optional data is clearly optional. |
| Why is data used or shared? | Purposes such as account operation, personalisation, advertising, analytics, safety and disclosure to other organisations. | Purposes and categories of recipients are understandable before signup. |
| Who can see or contact you? | Default audience for your profile, posts, stories, activity, contacts, messages, tags and location. | You can set a suitable audience and limit discovery and unsolicited contact. |
| Can you protect the account? | Unique password or passphrase, multi-factor authentication (MFA), login alerts, recovery and session controls. | The controls are available, clearly explained and practical to use. |
| Can you leave? | Deactivation, permanent deletion, export, retention and the official request process. | You know the exact route and what happens to data after you leave. |
Read the privacy notice before sharing information
Identify the collector and the purpose
Official guidance from the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) recommends checking who collects information, what it will be used for and whether it will be shared. Look for the legal organisation name, the categories of data collected and the stated purposes. A social network may need an email address to create an account, but it may also request a phone number, contacts, precise location, browsing activity, face or voice data, or details used to infer interests. Note which requests are necessary and which can be declined.

Check sharing and onward use
Find out whether information goes to service providers, advertising or analytics partners, affiliated organisations, public authorities or other recipients. The notice should explain why each category receives data and whether information is combined with data from elsewhere. “We may share with partners” is less useful than a clear description of the partner category and purpose. If the explanation is unclear, the ICO advises asking for more detail before supplying sensitive information.

Separate public posts from private account data
A post can be visible to an audience you choose while the platform still processes it internally for safety, recommendations or other stated purposes. Check how long posts, direct messages, deleted content, backups and account records are retained. Do not assume that deleting a post immediately removes every copy or that a private message is inaccessible to the service.
Decide what not to provide
Only enter details that are needed and that you are comfortable placing under the service’s terms. The Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) specifically cautions against exposing your address, date of birth, financial details, workplace, school and location clues in photographs. A full birth date, routine commute or identifiable school uniform can make a person easier to target even when the account is not public.
Inspect the real default audience and discoverability
Open settings before posting
Privacy defaults differ widely. The ICO notes that some sites make information available to anyone unless the user changes settings. During registration, open the sections usually labelled Privacy, Audience, Visibility, Discoverability or Safety. Labels vary, so read the explanatory text rather than relying on a familiar menu name.
Test each way someone can find you
- Can anyone search your name, handle, email address or phone number?
- Can strangers follow, add, tag or mention you?
- Are your friends, followers, groups, likes, comments, activity status or contact list visible?
- Can the service recommend your account to people who have your number or share mutual contacts?
- Does a location tag, map, nearby-user feature or photo metadata reveal where you live, work or spend time?
Set the smallest audience that still meets your purpose. If you are joining to communicate with a known group, a friends-only or approved-followers setting is generally less exposing than a public profile, but verify exactly what remains visible to logged-out visitors and search engines.

Look for location and activity controls
Turn off precise location sharing unless it is essential. Review whether old posts retain location information and whether the camera or app can access location in the background. Activity indicators such as “online,” “last active,” live maps and check-ins can reveal routines. The UK government’s platform-safety guidance treats limited visibility to friends and preventing strangers from seeing location as useful safety standards for operators; treat them as features to look for, not guarantees that every service provides them.
Evaluate safety, blocking and contact controls
Check unwanted-contact paths
Open the controls for direct messages, group invitations, comments, mentions, tags and replies. Determine whether strangers can contact you, whether messages are filtered, and whether you can approve requests before they appear. Private and public channels have different risks: a public post can attract a large unintended audience, while an open direct-message inbox can enable persistent contact from strangers.
Verify blocking and reporting
Before joining, find the steps to block, mute, restrict and report an account or piece of content. A useful control lets you stop contact, prevent a blocked person from finding you through new accounts where possible, and report impersonation, threats, scams or sexual exploitation. Check whether reports provide a confirmation or case status and whether you can appeal an incorrect moderation decision.

Visible personal details and activity can increase risks of tracking, targeting, grooming, cyberstalking and cyberbullying, according to UK platform-safety guidance. For a young person, look specifically for private-by-default profiles, limits on stranger messaging, approval for tags, restricted location sharing, age-appropriate content controls and a parent or guardian supervision option. Read what the supervision feature can actually see and change; it should not be treated as a substitute for discussing contacts and reporting with the young person.

Secure the account from the first login
Use a unique passphrase and MFA
The ACSC recommends a different passphrase for each social-media account and enabling MFA wherever it is offered. A long, unique passphrase limits damage if another site suffers a password breach. MFA adds a second proof of identity, such as an authenticator code, security key or approved device. Before enabling it, read the recovery instructions and store backup codes somewhere safe; otherwise a lost phone can lock you out.
Review login and recovery features
- Enable alerts for new devices, password changes and recovery attempts.
- Review active sessions and sign out devices you no longer recognise or use.
- Add only recovery methods you control and understand, and remove old phone numbers or email addresses.
- Check whether support will verify identity without asking for your password or one-time code.
Treat links and messages as untrusted
Do not open unsolicited links promising verification, prizes, urgent account restoration or exclusive content. Go to the official app or type the service’s known address yourself, then inspect notifications and security settings there. Never send a password, MFA code or recovery code in a message. Be cautious with shortened links, unexpected login alerts and requests to move a conversation to another service.
Confirm age eligibility and local rules
Read the service’s age terms
Age requirements are service- and jurisdiction-specific. Check the minimum age in the current terms, whether a parent’s consent is required, and what happens if the service cannot verify age. Do not enter a false birth date to bypass a restriction: it can create safety, legal and account-recovery problems.
Understand the Australian under-16 example
Australia illustrates why location matters. The eSafety Commissioner describes an age-restricted platform framework, and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) says that from 10 December 2025 covered age-restricted social-media platforms must take reasonable steps to prevent Australians under 16 from creating or keeping an account. Age-assurance methods must respect privacy laws and digital rights. This is an Australian rule, not a universal global age limit; people elsewhere must check their own law and the specific service’s terms.

For parents and guardians
Assess the account for the child’s actual age, not only the platform’s headline minimum. Confirm who can contact the account, whether profile information is public, how reporting works and what data a parent dashboard collects. Explain that screenshots and copied posts can persist beyond the original audience. Agree on a process for handling suspicious messages, bullying, impersonation and requests for personal or location information.

Distinguish uninstalling, deactivation and deletion
Removing an app from a phone does not delete or deactivate its account. Deactivation may hide a profile while retaining data for a later return; deletion is a separate process and may include a waiting period, exceptions for legal retention or backups, and limits on removing messages already delivered to others.
Locate the official deletion path
Use the service’s own app or website, not a third-party form. Typical menus are Settings → Account → Deactivation or deletion → Delete account, but labels differ. The ACSC advises using the official app or website to delete unused accounts, and Hong Kong Government Information Security guidance likewise recommends requesting deletion through the official website. Save the confirmation, note any final deletion date and remove connected apps or sign-in permissions.
Ask what remains
Check whether the service offers a copy of your data, what it retains after deletion, and whether other users’ copies of your messages or screenshots remain. If the retention explanation is not clear, ask support before joining or avoid providing information you would later need removed.
Best Value

Compare two or more services consistently
When choosing between networks, record the same facts for each one instead of comparing marketing claims. A simple worksheet can expose a decisive difference.
| Comparison axis | Record for each service |
|---|---|
| Collection and sharing | Required fields, optional permissions, purposes, recipient categories and retention explanation. |
| Default visibility | Who can view the profile, posts, followers, activity, tags and location before you change settings. |
| Discovery and contact | Search by name, email or phone; stranger messages; group invitations; recommendations. |
| Safety tools | Blocking, muting, reporting, moderation notices, appeals and child-account controls. |
| Account security | MFA methods, login alerts, session management, recovery and backup-code options. |
| Eligibility | Minimum age, consent requirements and local legal restrictions for your location. |
| Exit process | Deactivation versus deletion, waiting period, export, retention and support contact. |
Prefer the service whose controls are understandable and usable, not merely the one with the longest feature list. If a critical answer is unavailable, record it as unknown and treat that uncertainty as a risk rather than filling the gap with an assumption.
A practical pre-signup procedure
- Open the privacy notice and terms. Record the operator, required data, purposes, sharing categories, retention language and any changes-notification process.
- Preview the settings. Without posting, locate privacy, audience, discoverability, messaging, tagging, location, blocking, reporting and security menus.
- Set a data-minimal profile plan. Decide which name, photograph, biography, workplace, school and location details are genuinely necessary.
- Confirm eligibility. Check the current age rule, consent requirement and local restrictions for every person who will use the account.
- Prepare account security. Create a unique passphrase, enable MFA, save recovery codes and decide which login alerts you will monitor.
- Join with the least-exposing defaults. Choose a restricted audience, disable unnecessary contact syncing and deny optional location access.
- Run a stranger’s-eye test. View the profile while logged out or use the service’s preview feature. Remove anything that reveals a routine, address, school, workplace or sensitive relationship.
- Save the exit instructions. Bookmark or record the official deletion path and the support route before you start building an audience.
Red flags that justify walking away
- The operator is difficult to identify or the privacy notice omits basic collection and sharing purposes.
- Sensitive information is mandatory without a clear reason, or optional permissions are presented as if they were required.
- A new account is public and you cannot restrict search, messages, tags or location.
- Blocking and reporting controls are hard to find, ineffective in testing or unsupported by any explanation.
- MFA, login alerts or recovery options are absent for an account containing valuable personal information.
- The service’s age rule conflicts with your circumstances or local law.
- Deletion instructions are hidden, contradictory or unavailable through an official channel.
Joining is optional. If the service cannot explain its data practices or give you workable control over visibility, contact and account security, the safer decision is not to create the profile.
