Before investing in an IT services stock, examine how the company wins and retains work, whether it can deliver that work profitably, whether earnings turn into cash, and whether the share price reasonably reflects its risks and prospects. Use the issuer’s latest annual and quarterly filings for every company-specific metric: bookings, backlog, margins and other measures are defined differently across firms and reporting periods.
Start with what the company sells and how demand converts to revenue
Read the business description and segment notes to identify the actual mix: consulting, application development, systems integration, infrastructure management, business-process services or other offerings. Then determine whether revenue comes mainly from recurring managed services, projects, usage, or contracts that must be renewed. A company described as an IT services provider may combine several models with different levels of visibility and risk.
Test the durability of customer demand
- Review customer and industry concentration, contract duration, renewal patterns, termination rights, and how much work depends on discretionary technology budgets.
- Separate organic growth from acquisitions, currency movements, service-line mix changes, and shifts in major clients. Read management’s explanation alongside reported revenue.
- Look for evidence of client retention, renewals, new contract value, and deferred revenue, and track those measures using the issuer’s own definitions over time.
Revenue visibility is not the same as guaranteed revenue. For example, EPAM’s 2025 Form 10-K says client work can vary from year to year, engagements are typically individual projects, and clients may reduce, terminate, or bring work in-house; it also notes exposure to lower spending in served industries. That is an issuer-specific example, not a conclusion about every provider. EPAM Systems 2025 Form 10-K.
Interpret bookings and backlog carefully
Check whether the company defines signings or bookings as firm commitments, management estimates, or another measure. IBM describes signings as management’s initial estimate of a client’s commitment under a services contract. It defines backlog as the estimated remaining value to be recognized under services contracts after recognized revenue and backlog adjustments. Backlog is therefore an estimate, not a promise of future sales, and definitions and adjustments vary among issuers. IBM 2024 Form 10-K.
#1 Best Overall
Gartner’s 2024 filing also identifies client retention, renewals, new contract value, backlog, and deferred revenue among business drivers and risks. These measures can inform a trend analysis, but do not compare them across companies until you reconcile their definitions. Gartner 2024 Form 10-K.
Assess delivery economics, not just growth
Revenue growth can coexist with falling profitability. Review gross and operating margin trends, preferably by segment, and read management’s discussion for utilization, wage pressure, subcontractor use, pricing, project mix, and restructuring or acquisition costs. Ask whether the company must add staff roughly in line with revenue, or whether automation and reusable platforms are increasing output per employee.
Understand the contract mix
Time-and-materials, fixed-price, outcome-based, and managed-services contracts allocate delivery risk differently. For fixed-price work, a provider can face cost overruns if scope, staffing, costs, or productivity assumptions prove wrong. EPAM’s filing specifically discusses estimation risks on fixed-price and productivity-linked engagements; use it as an example of the questions to apply to each issuer, rather than as evidence that all companies have the same exposure. EPAM Systems 2025 Form 10-K.

Check whether earnings become cash
Compare net income with cash from operations over several years. A persistent gap merits investigation rather than an automatic verdict: acquisitions, stock compensation, restructuring, and working-capital movements can all affect the comparison.
- Track receivables, unbilled work or contract assets, deferred revenue or contract liabilities, and collection trends.
- Look for rising collection periods or contract balances that grow faster than revenue, and read the issuer’s explanation.
- Consider client credit quality and payment delays. EPAM says delayed payment or client payment problems can lengthen collection time and raise bad-debt expense. EPAM Systems 2025 Form 10-K.
Evaluate talent, delivery locations, and concentration
Skilled employees and the ability to assign them to paying engagements are core operating inputs for services firms. Examine disclosed employee counts, hiring and attrition, skill mix, wage trends, utilization where reported, and reliance on subcontractors. Consider whether the company has enough people with the capabilities its customers need, and whether it can keep them at costs consistent with its margins.
Map delivery locations against political, currency, infrastructure, and regulatory exposures. Also check customer concentration by client, industry, and geography. As a dated, company-specific example, EPAM reported approximately 14,100 global delivery, administrative, and support personnel based in Ukraine and Belarus as of December 31, 2025; that figure is not an industry statistic. EPAM Systems 2025 Form 10-K.
Weigh both the opportunity and risk from AI
AI may help providers deliver work faster, automate routine tasks, and win new client projects. It may also reduce billable hours, alter pricing, enable client insourcing, intensify competition from automated tools, and require investment. Look for reported demand, client wins, productivity measures, and margin outcomes rather than treating broad AI claims as proof of durable advantage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsEPAM says clients may use AI tools to create or modify applications internally, potentially reducing reliance on external providers. Gartner identifies keeping pace with AI and other technology developments as a risk. Those disclosures show that the issuers consider the topic relevant; they do not establish a universal net effect or a reliable forecast of displacement. EPAM Systems 2025 Form 10-K; Gartner 2024 Form 10-K.
Read operational, cybersecurity, and regulatory disclosures
Review risk factors for service interruptions, contract disputes, client credit, cybersecurity, privacy, intellectual property, employee availability, and regulatory compliance. Check whether the company reports incidents, litigation, remediation costs, customer losses, or insurance changes. Read the cybersecurity disclosure with the risk factors and governance description; a description of controls is not proof that incidents cannot occur.

EPAM’s filing discusses security and privacy exposures, including client requirements and potential effects on reputation, service delivery, and customer relationships. Gartner lists cybersecurity incidents and disruptions among its risks. TTEC’s 2024 filing describes security, privacy, and emerging-technology risks, and names client relationships, innovation, delivery capability, efficiency, pricing, brand, and financial strength as competitive factors. These are examples of issuer disclosures, not a complete risk list for any other company. EPAM Systems 2025 Form 10-K; Gartner 2024 Form 10-K; TTEC 2024 Form 10-K.
A risk factor identifies an exposure the issuer considers relevant; it does not quantify the probability of a loss or establish that one will happen. Use the disclosure to identify questions and then assess the company’s reported experience and response.
Review financial resilience and capital allocation
Inspect cash, debt maturities, interest costs, leases, pension or other long-term obligations, acquisition commitments, and liquidity. Also assess share-based compensation and dilution, buybacks, dividends, and whether acquired businesses appear to earn returns that justify their cost. Gartner’s 2024 filing, for instance, identifies debt obligations, acquisitions and integration, staffing, competition, and international currency exposure among its risks. Gartner 2024 Form 10-K.
Best Value
Decide whether the share price fits plausible outcomes
A strong business is not automatically an attractive investment at any price. Compare valuation using more than one measure where appropriate—for example, enterprise value relative to normalized operating earnings or free cash flow—while accounting for differences in growth, margins, capital intensity, and balance sheets.
Build conservative, base, and optimistic cases for growth and margins, and consider how each would affect normalized cash generation. A single multiple cannot establish value on its own. Because no issuer, ticker, share price, or valuation date is specified here, this framework does not imply a stock-specific valuation or recommendation.
Compare companies on a like-for-like basis
When evaluating two or more providers, normalize for fiscal year, currency, acquisitions, and accounting definitions before drawing conclusions. Compare the same operating and financial dimensions rather than ranking companies on one headline measure.
