An imported phone is only a bargain if it works on your carrier, can be serviced on realistic terms, and still costs less after delivery and import charges. Before paying, verify the exact regional model and carrier approval, check the warranty and return route in writing, and calculate the landed cost using the rules for your destination. The answer depends on your country, the seller, the shipping route, and the phone’s precise model.
Will an imported phone work with your carrier?
Check both whether the phone is unlocked and whether the exact model is compatible. These are separate questions: an unlocked phone can still lack the radio bands or carrier approval needed for reliable service.
Identify the precise model and regional variant
Record the model number and regional SKU from the listing. A family name alone—such as a phone’s marketing name—may not identify its cellular capabilities. Compare the exact model with the manufacturer’s specifications and the destination carrier’s current compatibility information or IMEI-check process. Apple, for example, lists cellular bands by iPhone model at its model-specific cellular support page; use the equivalent official specification for other brands.
Verify carrier, bands, and SIM setup
- Ask the seller to confirm in writing that the device is factory unlocked. Do not assume that a listing’s use of “unlocked” means the phone was never carrier-locked or that it is accepted by your carrier.
- Compare supported LTE and 5G bands with the carrier’s requirements. Band support matters, but it may not be sufficient: carrier acceptance and plan provisioning can also affect whether service works.
- If you need eSIM, verify that the exact device and your intended plan are supported by the carrier. Apple advises checking that an iPhone used with another carrier is not locked and checking both cellular bands and carrier eSIM support: Apple’s guidance on using an iPhone with another carrier.
- Before ordering, ask the carrier to confirm compatibility for the precise model or IMEI where possible. A manufacturer’s band list is not a universal carrier-approval guarantee.
What warranty service will you actually get?
Do not treat “global warranty” in a seller listing as proof that the manufacturer will repair the phone locally. Check the manufacturer’s written terms for the country where the device was originally sold, then ask the manufacturer or an authorized service provider whether the precise model can be serviced in your country.

Apple’s warranty terms state: “Apple may restrict warranty service for iPhone, iPad, Apple TV and HomePod to the country where Apple or its Authorized Distributors originally sold the device.” Apple also notes that service options and parts availability vary by country. Its terms warn that service outside the purchase country can involve shipping and import-related costs. See Apple’s warranty terms and the terms’ service provisions.
Ask whether a repair requires sending the phone back to its purchase country, and who would pay shipping, customs, VAT, or other charges. Check when the warranty period starts, and keep the invoice, serial number, model details, and the seller’s written claims. For brands other than Apple, consult that brand’s model-specific warranty and service terms.

How do you calculate the real import cost?
The listing price is not necessarily the delivered price. Depending on the destination, origin, declared value, shipping route, and local rules, the buyer may owe VAT or sales tax, customs duty, declaration-related charges, or courier handling fees. Add applicable charges and delivery costs before comparing the import with a locally sold phone.
Check the rules for your destination and shipping route
- Determine whether the phone will be shipped by post or courier, or carried in luggage. Procedures and rules may differ.
- Use the destination customs authority’s current guidance for the shipment’s origin, declared value, commodity classification, and tax treatment. Do not apply another country’s thresholds or rates to your purchase.
- Ask the seller or courier who handles declarations and whether the courier will collect charges before delivery. For goods sent to the UK by post or courier, HMRC says VAT or Customs Duty may be payable and the courier will tell the recipient whether payment is due: HMRC guidance on goods sent from abroad.
- For a UK import, use the relevant commodity code and declared value when working out the amount due. HMRC’s guide to importing goods into the UK explains the declaration process and possible refund or waiver routes.
Rules depend on jurisdiction and can change. As a specific EU example, the European Commission reports that, from 1 July 2026, the €150 customs-duty exemption was abolished for qualifying distance-sale imports, with a temporary €3 duty per item applying to qualifying consignments not exceeding €150. This is a customs-duty rule, not a complete calculation of VAT or a rule for every import route; check the live rules for your transaction at the European Commission’s low-value consignments guidance.

Can you return the phone if there is a problem?
Legal consumer rights and a seller’s practical return process are related but not identical. Identify the legal seller and the jurisdiction of the sale; a marketplace, its seller, and the manufacturer may have different responsibilities. Then read the policy that applies to your order before payment.
- Confirm the return deadline and any condition or packaging requirements.
- Find the return address and whether the seller accepts returns shipped from your country.
- Check who pays return postage, whether any restocking fee applies, when refunds are issued, and how customs charges are treated.
- Ask whether you can return the device if it is incompatible with your carrier, defective, or materially different from the listing.
- Save the listing, invoice, written compatibility and warranty claims, and the return terms.
EU consumer guidance describes protections and information relevant to shopping in the EU, including returns, guarantees, shipping, pricing, and VAT. Its applicability depends on the transaction and should not be generalized to other countries or sellers: see Your Europe’s consumer shopping guidance.

How to compare two imported phones
Compare the same practical factors for each exact regional variant rather than ranking them by headline price alone.
| Check | What to compare |
|---|---|
| Carrier fit | Exact model/SKU, carrier acceptance, supported LTE and 5G bands, and unlocked status. |
| SIM and plan | Physical SIM or eSIM configuration, plus support from the destination carrier for the device and plan. |
| Warranty and repair | Warranty region, local service availability, and possible shipping and import-related repair costs. |
| Landed cost | Seller price plus delivery and destination taxes, duties, and applicable handling charges. |
| Returns | Return window, destination, postage payer, refund terms, and treatment of customs charges. |
The best-value option is the one that meets your carrier needs and remains worthwhile after realistic service, import, and return costs—not necessarily the one with the lowest listed price.
