Before enrolling, ask to see the club’s safeguarding and complaints policies; find out who leads safeguarding and first aid; and check how adults are recruited, trained, and supervised. Also verify emergency plans, consent and information handling, online safety, and whether the club can meet your child’s health, disability, and personal-care needs. Visit the venue before the first session if you can.
Rules and terminology vary by location. The Department for Education’s parent guidance cited here applies to England; check local requirements wherever you live.
Why it is worth asking questions
In England, there is no single legal framework governing how children’s clubs and activities operate, and providers are not typically inspected, overseen, or assessed by a regulator. That makes it important to check the club’s policies, practices, and insurance yourself. The Department for Education says, “A well-run and trustworthy provider will welcome questions.” See the Department for Education parent guidance, updated 6 February 2026.
What to ask about safeguarding and adults
Who is responsible for safeguarding?
Ask for the child-protection or safeguarding policy and identify the named safeguarding lead. Find out what training they have completed and when it was last refreshed. Check how a child can raise a concern, how the club responds to a disclosure or allegation, and how parents will be informed.
What checks and training do staff and volunteers have?
Ask: “What checks do they undertake to make sure staff and volunteers are suitable to work with children?” Find out how adults are recruited and supervised, what references and role-appropriate criminal-record checks are used, and what safeguarding training they receive. Ask whether staff know what to do if a child discloses abuse. No single check proves that someone is suitable.
Who else may be present, and how is contact supervised?
Ask whether adults who are not staff or volunteers may be present, whether any one-to-one contact takes place, and how supervision and boundaries are managed. Clarify expectations for contact with children, mobile devices, and social media. If the activity has a governing body or association, ask about relevant affiliation or safeguarding standards; affiliation does not replace checking the club’s own practices.
What to inspect at the venue and ask about emergencies
Before the first session, visit the space and, if possible, observe an activity. Check that the premises are clean and appear safe, exits are clear, and a first-aid kit is available.

Who is in charge of first aid?
Ask who is appointed to provide first aid, what training they have, and what happens if a child is injured or becomes ill. Ask about fire and other emergency procedures and whether the provider has assessed risks of injury or illness. Request to see relevant health-and-safety arrangements. The England guidance says large providers should have a written health-and-safety policy.
Is the club insured?
Ask for evidence of public liability insurance and check that it covers the activities your child will take part in.
How the club handles health, disability, and personal care
Tell the club about relevant medical conditions, allergies, medication, and emergency contacts. Ask how it stores this information, who can access it, and whether it may be shared. The England guidance says providers should seek updated information when a child has attended for more than a year.
Discuss your child’s individual needs before signing up. Ask how the club supports disability or special educational needs, medication, toileting, changing, feeding, or other personal care. Be specific about what your child needs and how the club will manage it during sessions.

What consent, online safety, and communication arrangements apply?
Consent and activity arrangements
Clarify what written consent is required for participation, travel, and photography or video. Ask how the club handles photos and recordings, including who may take them and how they may be used. If transport or travel is involved, establish the arrangements and permissions before the first trip. Sport Integrity Australia’s parent guidance also highlights written consent for participation, images, and travel; it is an Australian source, not a statement of English requirements.
Devices, internet, and social media
Ask whether children can access the internet, whether use is supervised and age-appropriate, and what online-safety policy applies. Find out whether children’s own devices or mobile-data connections could bypass venue filtering, and whether staff may contact children through personal devices or social media.

Parent communication and complaints
Read the complaints policy and code of conduct. Check whom you should contact with a concern, how the club handles complaints or safeguarding reports, and how it communicates with parents. Make sure you have a clear route to raise an issue after enrollment.
Warning signs to take seriously
Pause enrollment, seek clarification, or consider another provider if you find:

How to compare two or more clubs
There is no universal rating scale in the cited guidance. Compare each club on the same practical points instead:
- Safeguarding policy, named lead, and child-accessible reporting.
- Adult recruitment checks, training, and supervision.
- Premises, first aid, emergency procedures, and insurance.
- Consent, transparency, and communication with parents.
- Support for your child’s health, disability, and personal-care needs.
- Online safety, information handling, and activity-specific policies.
A clear, specific answer is more useful than a general assurance. If something matters to your child’s safety or participation, ask how it works in practice.
Where to raise an unresolved safeguarding concern in England
The Department for Education advises raising an unresolved concern with the provider first, then escalating safeguarding issues to the local authority designated officer or the NSPCC. If a child is in immediate danger, call police on 999. These routes and terms are England-specific; outside England, use the relevant local safeguarding and emergency contacts.
