Choose a private hospital for the specific treatment you need—not for its name alone. Verify that the right team and services are available, check the facility’s registration and any claimed accreditation, get a written estimate, and confirm coverage with your insurer for that branch and treatment. Hospital regulation, patient-rights arrangements and pricing oversight vary by State and Union Territory, so verify local details rather than assuming one national process applies everywhere.

Start with the treatment the patient needs

A hospital’s general reputation does not establish that it can provide a particular service, that the relevant clinician is available, or that emergency support is in place when needed. Compare facilities against the actual treatment plan and the patient’s needs. For urgent or emergency care, prioritize timely access to care rather than delaying treatment to complete a comparison.

For each candidate, establish who will lead the treatment, what relevant experience that clinician has, and who covers nights, weekends and complications. Ask whether the facility has the required diagnostics, ICU, blood bank and emergency response capacity; whether it can manage likely complications; and how referrals or transfers are handled if a service is unavailable. Verify these details directly with the hospital and treating team: general promotional claims do not establish clinician credentials or service availability.

Check registration under the rules that apply locally

The Clinical Establishments (Registration and Regulation) Act, 2010, and Central Government Rules, 2012, provide a framework for registering and regulating public and private health facilities in jurisdictions that have adopted the Act. It does not apply uniformly across India. The Directorate General of Health Services’ official FAQ describes adoption by specified States and Union Territories, but the applicable position should be checked with current official sources for the hospital’s location.

Ask the facility for its current registration number, the authority that issued it, and where the registration can be verified. The Act’s framework provides for provisional and permanent registration, and the FAQ says registration and related data are intended to be public. Registration is a basic regulatory check; it is not a ranking or proof that one hospital is clinically better than another.

Where the Act and rules apply, covered facilities are required to display rates for services and facilities conspicuously in the local language and English and to comply with applicable standard treatment guidelines. Prescribed rates or ranges matter where determined and applicable. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare says State and Union Territory governments are responsible for implementation and for controlling exploitative pricing, so local rules and enforcement are relevant.

Verify any NABH accreditation claim

The National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers (NABH), a constituent board of the Quality Council of India, describes accreditation as public recognition based on independent external peer assessment. Its standards address areas including patient care, medication management, consent, records, infection control, staffing, patient feedback and tariff transparency. NABH also describes ongoing surveillance, including planned surveillance during the second year; accreditation is not simply a one-time assessment.

Ask whether the exact hospital facility is currently accredited, which campus, programme and services are within scope, and when the accreditation is valid until. Confirm the status through current NABH information rather than relying on a logo. Accreditation is a useful signal about assessed processes and quality systems; it does not guarantee a particular treatment outcome or establish that a specific clinician or service is right for the patient. A facility may use a different accreditation programme, so the absence of one large-hospital label alone does not establish poor care.

Compare the treating team, safety and communication

Before admission, get clear answers on the people and processes that will affect the patient’s care. Ask how the hospital prevents and responds to infection, how medicines are prescribed and checked, how risks and alternatives will be explained, and how consent will be obtained. The patient should be able to communicate in a language they understand, ask questions, and learn how to access their records.

  • Named team: Who is responsible for the treatment, who else is involved, and who makes decisions if the lead clinician is unavailable?
  • Coverage: Who is on call after hours, and how are urgent changes or complications escalated?
  • Capability: Which diagnostics, critical-care services, blood products or specialist support are available on site, and what happens if a needed service is not?
  • Patient and caregiver arrangements: What are the visiting, caregiver, accessibility and follow-up arrangements? How will the team communicate updates?

Get an itemized estimate, not just a package headline

Ask for a dated written estimate and compare like with like. A package price may not describe every service or circumstance that affects the final bill. Request a breakdown of professional fees, room charges, diagnostics, medicines, implants and consumables, and ask which items are included in a package and which are excluded.

Clarify the deposit, payment schedule, and refund terms if treatment changes or admission is cancelled. If the applicable law requires the facility to display rates, ask where to see them; a displayed rate does not replace a written estimate for the proposed treatment.

Confirm insurance and cashless terms with the insurer

Ask both the hospital and the insurer whether the exact branch is currently in the network for the proposed treatment. Then ask the insurer what the particular policy requires for pre-authorisation and cashless admission, and what costs could remain the patient’s responsibility. Do not treat a hospital’s network listing or accreditation as confirmation that an individual claim will be paid.

NABH says accreditation provides an objective system that can support insurance and third-party empanelment. That is distinct from coverage under a patient’s specific policy, which depends on the insurer’s current network status, policy terms and claim decision.

If using PM-JAY, check current scheme details separately

Ayushman Bharat–Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) package availability and rates are not the same as a private-pay estimate. A 2023 Ministry of Health and Family Welfare release describing Health Benefit Packages 2022 reported 1,949 treatment procedures across 27 specialties. It also said implementing States and Union Territories may add packages or adjust costs for local needs, with regional cost differences reflected in pricing. Those are figures about HBP 2022, not a current private-hospital tariff or proof of a patient’s eligibility.

For a specific procedure, verify current package details, eligibility and the hospital’s empanelment with the National Health Authority or the relevant State or Union Territory scheme authority. Do not assume a private hospital participates in the scheme or that a package applies to a particular admission.

Know how to obtain records and raise a complaint

Before admission, ask how the patient can obtain medical records, whom to contact with a concern, and how to reach the hospital’s grievance officer. Find the current State or Union Territory patient-rights charter and the relevant authority for unresolved complaints. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has said that adoption, implementation, monitoring, display and grievance arrangements for the Patients’ Rights Charter are responsibilities of the respective State and Union Territory governments, where applicable; there is not one guaranteed national escalation route for every case.

Use this call or visit checklist

  1. Ask: “Is this facility currently registered with the relevant authority? What is its registration number, and where can I verify it?”
  2. Ask: “Is this exact facility currently NABH accredited? Which campus, programme and services are within scope, and until when is the accreditation valid?”
  3. Ask: “Who will lead this treatment, what relevant experience do they have, and who covers nights, weekends and complications?”
  4. Ask: “Can I have a dated written estimate listing fees, room charges, diagnostics, medicines, implants or consumables, package inclusions, exclusions and likely additional costs?”
  5. Ask the insurer: “Is this exact branch in network for this treatment, and what room limit, co-pay, exclusion, package condition or pre-authorisation rule applies to my policy?”
  6. Ask: “How do I obtain records, contact the grievance officer and escalate an unresolved complaint to the appropriate State or Union Territory authority?”

When comparing more than one candidate, record the answers for the same treatment and room category so you are comparing equivalent services. Include practical considerations such as travel time, accessibility, caregiver arrangements and continuity of follow-up alongside clinical capability, cost and coverage.
