Start by defining the accounting work you need, then compare Denver firms against the same checklist: service fit, relevant experience, credentials, written scope and fees, data safeguards, communication, and—when you need assurance work—peer-review information. A local address or broad service menu alone does not establish that a firm is right for your engagement.
Define the work before contacting firms
Write down the services you need and the outcome you expect. Specify whether you are looking for tax preparation or planning, bookkeeping, financial statements, business advisory, or an audit, review, or other attestation engagement. Ask each firm which named services it will perform and which fall outside the proposed scope. This helps distinguish a firm that offers a service generally from one that can take responsibility for your specific work.
For any audit, review, or attestation engagement, treat it as a separate qualification question: who will sign the report, whether that person is authorized for the work, and what comparable engagement experience they have. Authorization and practical competence are different considerations.
Verify credentials and relevant experience
Check the credential with the appropriate source
The Colorado Board of Accountancy states that it regulates certified public accountants (CPAs) and provides license-search and complaint resources. Check a prospective CPA’s current status directly with the Board before hiring; a static article cannot confirm live standing. The Board also says it does not regulate accountants, public accountants, tax preparers, or enrolled agents, so first establish what credential the person actually holds and then use the appropriate regulator or credential source.

Ask about work like yours
Ask who will lead the engagement, who will handle day-to-day questions, and what experience the team has with clients in your industry and with your entity type. Request examples of comparable engagements and ask how recently the people assigned to the work have received relevant continuing education. A broad service list is not proof that the assigned professional has the experience your matter calls for.
Get the engagement terms in writing
Before work begins, obtain an engagement letter that makes the responsibilities and boundaries clear. It should identify:

Do not rely on a verbal description of the service or a headline estimate when the written terms leave important tasks, costs, or responsibilities unclear. California CPA-selection guidance also recommends clarifying these terms, outsourcing, security, and cost; use it as general consumer guidance, not as a statement of Colorado law. Evaluate communication and information handling
Ask how you will contact the team during the engagement and throughout the year, who answers routine questions, and what response times to expect. Discuss how the firm handles accuracy, timeliness, confidentiality, and document exchange. If the firm uses outside providers, ask which tasks they perform and how your information is protected when it is shared. Get answers specific enough to include in the engagement terms where appropriate.

For audit or review work, ask about peer review
If your engagement includes audited or reviewed financial statements, ask the firm for its latest peer-review result and ask whether relevant documents are publicly available. The AICPA peer-review public file lets users find firms’ enrollment status and, for firms in specified sections or those that request public availability, accepted peer-review documents. Not every firm is represented by every document type in that file.
The Colorado Society of CPAs describes peer review as a process for monitoring accounting and auditing quality and identifies the AICPA program as the route for Colorado’s mandatory requirements. Use the information as one input about a firm’s accounting and auditing practice—not as a guarantee of future results or a substitute for checking the people and experience proposed for your engagement.

Compare candidates on the same questions
Use the same questions with each firm so that differences in scope, staffing, and terms are visible rather than hidden in different proposals.
