Before buying stock in a Bitcoin treasury company, check how much Bitcoin it holds, how the company financed those holdings, what debt and preferred claims sit ahead of common shareholders, whether it can meet obligations with cash, and how the stock is valued against its assets. Then compare those figures using the same reporting and market dates. A company’s Bitcoin balance is only one part of the investment: it does not guarantee a particular share price or provide the liquidity needed to pay bills.
Start with dated filings and market data
Use the issuer’s latest annual and quarterly filings, earnings releases, and dated market data. Record the date for every figure. Holdings, cash, debt, share count, and stock price can change at different times, so combining numbers from different dates can produce a misleading comparison.
Strategy Inc. provides a recent example, not a template for every Bitcoin treasury company. Its Q2 2026 Form 10-Q covers the quarter ended June 30, 2026, and includes certain subsequent-event disclosures through July 24, 2026. The figures below are issuer-reported and dated to June 30 unless noted. Check the company’s own filings for the corresponding facts at the time you evaluate any stock.

How much Bitcoin does the company hold per diluted share?
Confirm the Bitcoin balance and how the issuer reports it: quantity, carrying value, purchases and sales during the period, cost basis if disclosed, and whether any Bitcoin is pledged or otherwise encumbered. Also check how significant Bitcoin is relative to the company’s total assets. A concentrated treasury can make the company’s balance sheet and reported results highly sensitive to Bitcoin’s price.
#1 Best Overall
Strategy reported approximately 846,000 Bitcoin with a carrying value of $49.67 billion as of June 30, 2026. Its filing also reported approximately 401.3 million assumed diluted shares outstanding on that date. Dividing the approximate Bitcoin balance by the assumed diluted share count gives about 0.00211 Bitcoin per assumed diluted share (approximately 211,000 satoshis). This is a simple ratio, not a guarantee that a shareholder can claim that quantity of Bitcoin: it excludes debt, preferred claims, other assets and liabilities, and the effects of future share issuance.
| Strategy issuer-reported figure | As of June 30, 2026 | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin held | Approximately 846,000 BTC | Company-reported quantity; check the issuer’s filing for sales, purchases, and encumbrances. |
| Bitcoin carrying value | $49.67 billion | Balance-sheet carrying value, not the company’s market capitalization or a promised value per share. |
| Outstanding indebtedness | Approximately $6.75 billion aggregate principal amount | Debt principal; review each instrument’s terms, maturity, and cash requirements. |
| Assumed diluted shares | Approximately 401.3 million | Issuer-reported share figure used for the illustrative Bitcoin-per-share calculation above. |
These Strategy figures come from Strategy Inc.’s Q2 2026 Form 10-Q. Do not compare Bitcoin per share across companies unless the share-count definitions and reporting dates are aligned. An issuer-defined “BTC Yield” or similar Bitcoin-per-share measure is supplemental: inspect its calculation and the share denominator rather than treating it as cash generation or a shareholder return.
What financing and claims sit ahead of common shareholders?
Build a capital-structure picture rather than looking only at the common share count. Review debt by amount, maturity, interest rate, covenants, collateral, and repayment or conversion terms. Add convertible securities, preferred stock, and other senior claims. For preferred securities, check dividend rates, whether payments are cumulative, and what happens if payments are deferred. Strategy’s 10-K states that common stockholders rank behind certain preferred and convertible instruments in claims on assets.
Rank #2
Trace financing proceeds to their actual uses. Issuing shares or debt can fund Bitcoin purchases, but it can also fund a cash reserve, preferred dividends, interest, or operating costs. Strategy reported that in the first half of 2026, common-share issuance funded Bitcoin purchases as well as a reserve, dividends, and interest. Therefore, an increase in shares does not necessarily mean a matching increase in Bitcoin per share. Compare the change in Bitcoin holdings with the change in fully diluted shares and the stated use of proceeds.
Can the company meet its obligations with liquid resources?
Separate cash and short-term investments from Bitcoin’s marked value. Compare resources that can be used promptly with upcoming interest, debt maturities, preferred dividends, operating expenses, and any reserve commitments. A rising Bitcoin valuation can improve reported asset values without creating cash to pay obligations; selling Bitcoin to raise cash may also involve timing, price, custody, or other constraints.
Strategy’s Q2 2026 Form 10-Q says Bitcoin is less liquid than cash. It also states that, as of June 30, 2026, the software business was not expected to generate enough operating cash flow to cover financial obligations or liquidity needs for the following twelve months. That assessment is specific to Strategy and that filing date. For another issuer, read its own liquidity discussion, cash-flow statement, debt maturities, and subsequent-event disclosures.

Does the operating business generate cash, or is the stock mainly a financing vehicle for Bitcoin exposure?
Identify what the company sells apart from Bitcoin, if anything. Check revenue trends, operating expenses, cash from operations, and whether recurring business cash can support operations and financial obligations. Revenue or accounting profit alone does not answer that question; the cash-flow statement and management’s liquidity discussion matter.
Strategy describes both a Bitcoin treasury operation and an enterprise analytics software business. Its filing’s company-specific liquidity assessment is noted above. Do not assume the operating business of another Bitcoin treasury company has the same scale, cash generation, or role in supporting obligations.
How should you read Bitcoin-driven earnings?
Check the accounting policy and the period when it took effect before comparing earnings across years. Strategy adopted ASU 2023-08 on January 1, 2025. Under the fair-value accounting described in its Q2 2026 Form 10-Q, subsequent changes in Bitcoin’s fair value are recognized in earnings; periods before adoption are not directly comparable. An unrealized gain or loss can materially affect reported results without representing cash earned or spent in that period.
Rank #4
Strategy’s Q2 2026 results release reported an operating loss of $8.33 billion, including an $8.32 billion unrealized digital-asset loss. For Q2 2025, it reported operating income of $14.03 billion, including a $14.05 billion unrealized digital-asset gain. These are issuer-reported examples of how fair-value changes can dominate a period’s results, not a forecast of future performance.
Strategy’s Q2 2026 Form 10-Q states: “Additionally, any unrealized gain on digital assets reflected in our financial results for a given period does not reflect cash actually earned by us during that period, and a significant increase in our digital assets included on our balance sheet is not associated with an actual increase in our liquidity.” When assessing earnings quality, distinguish changes in Bitcoin’s reported value from cash flow generated by the business.
How are Bitcoin and other assets held, and what custody risks remain?
Look for the named custodians, how holdings are allocated among them, counterparty exposure, security controls, private-key risks, and any Bitcoin pledged as collateral. Custody arrangements affect access to assets and create operational and counterparty risks; a large reported balance does not by itself explain how safely or readily the assets can be accessed.

Strategy reported using Anchorage Digital Bank, Coinbase Custody, and Fidelity Digital Assets, and disclosed exposure to custodian performance. Those are Strategy-specific disclosures. Verify the custodians and risks in each issuer’s own filings rather than assuming another company uses the same providers or protections.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the stock priced at a premium or discount to its assets?
For a dated valuation, compare market capitalization with the market value of Bitcoin and other assets, then account for debt, preferred stock, and other senior claims. Consider the operating business as well. This can help describe whether the stock trades at a premium or discount to an estimate of net assets, but it does not mechanically determine what the shares should be worth: financing needs, risk, future dilution, liquidity, and investor demand also matter.
Use a stock price and asset values from the same date, and make clear which share count you use. A calculation based on one day’s market capitalization and a different date’s Bitcoin balance is not a contemporaneous premium or discount. No live stock price or same-date premium calculation is included here; calculate it from current market data and the latest issuer disclosures before relying on a valuation comparison.

Also compare the stock with other ways to obtain Bitcoin exposure. Common stock adds company-specific risks—including debt, senior claims, operating costs, custody, financing and possible dilution—that direct Bitcoin ownership or another investment vehicle may not share in the same way. Strategy’s 10-K says its assets are concentrated in Bitcoin and that its strategy relies substantially on equity and debt financing. It also says Strategy is not registered as an investment company under the Investment Company Act; do not assume its stockholders receive the protections of a registered fund.
How to compare two Bitcoin treasury companies fairly
Use the same reporting dates and market date for each issuer. Compare the following items rather than relying on a single headline number:
- Bitcoin held per diluted share, including the issuer’s share-count definition and any supplemental measure calculation.
- Debt, maturities, interest burden, preferred claims, and dividend-payment rules.
- Cash and reserve coverage of expected obligations and operating costs.
- Operating cash flow and reliance on new equity or debt issuance.
- Custodian concentration, counterparty exposure, and collateral arrangements.
- Market valuation relative to Bitcoin and other net assets, while accounting for senior claims and the operating business.
A company with more Bitcoin may still have less Bitcoin exposure per diluted share, heavier near-term obligations, or greater dependence on external financing. The comparison is useful only when the dates and definitions match.
