Before buying a refurbished or discounted Sony WH-1000XM5, verify the exact model and seller, inspect the headband and earcups, test charging, battery behavior, sound, noise canceling, controls and calls, and get the return and warranty terms in writing. Treat Sony’s battery figures as new-unit specifications—not a guarantee of how long a used pair will last.
Confirm the model and what “refurbished” means
Check that the listing and product labels say WH-1000XM5, Sony’s over-ear wireless noise-canceling headphones. Sony’s US specifications page identifies features including 30 mm drivers, Bluetooth 5.2, SBC/AAC/LDAC support, touch controls and a detachable connection cable. These details can help distinguish the XM5 from another XM-series model.
Ask whether the pair is manufacturer-refurbished, seller-refurbished, open-box or simply used. “Refurbished” is not a universal quality grade. Find out what was inspected or repaired, whether parts were replaced, and whether the seller will document the condition and any known faults. Save the listing and the seller’s written answers.

Ask for clear photos of both earcups, ear pads, headband, hinges and arms, ports, and model or serial labels. Look for cracks, looseness, bent parts, heavy pad wear or flaking, odor, corrosion, liquid damage, and mismatched or missing parts. If you cannot inspect the headphones in person, ask the seller to confirm their condition and any prior repairs in writing.

Sony’s original in-box list includes a carrying case, connection cable and USB cable, but a used listing may not include all three. Confirm exactly what the seller will ship rather than assuming the original bundle is intact. Sony’s WH-1000XM5 support page links to model-specific manuals, repair resources and parts or accessories support.
Test the battery and charging
Sony specifies up to 30 hours of continuous music playback with noise canceling on and up to 40 hours with it off, plus approximately 3.5 hours to charge. These are manufacturer figures for the product, not independent measurements of a particular refurbished pair. Sony’s Help Guide notes that charging and usage hours can vary with conditions. A used headset’s battery health cannot be inferred from the maximum ratings.

During the return period, charge the headphones and check that charging starts and completes normally. Use them long enough to notice whether the battery level falls unusually quickly or the headset shuts off unexpectedly. Ask whether the seller inspected or replaced the battery, and what evidence supports any battery-health claim. Do not treat a short listening test—or Sony’s maximum playback figure—as proof of the battery’s remaining capacity.

Check sound, noise canceling, controls and calls
Pair the headphones with a phone or computer, then play audio at a moderate volume. Check both left and right sides for sound, balance, dropouts and stable connection. Sony’s headphones troubleshooting guide covers pairing, one-sided or missing sound, and audio problems.

- Switch between noise canceling and ambient sound; listen for crackling, unusual hiss or a major difference between sides.
- Try the touch controls and physical buttons.
- Make a call or record a voice memo to check microphone and call audio.
- If the connection cable is included, test wired audio as well.
- See whether Sony’s Sound Connect app recognizes the model and displays its settings. This is a useful function check, but not proof of authenticity by itself.
These checks cover functions Sony documents for the model, but they cannot establish a unit’s full history or guarantee it will remain trouble-free.
Check fit and wear detection
Wear the headphones normally, with the pads directly over your ears, and see whether playback or power behavior is consistent. Sony says sensors may fail to detect that the headphones are being worn when they are over a cap, cloth, scarf or hair, and may turn them off. The explanation appears in Sony’s unexpected-shutoff support article, last modified September 8, 2026. Test without anything covering the sensors before treating a shutoff as a defect.

Read the exact return and warranty terms
A Sony model-support page shows where to find support; it does not prove that a particular refurbished sale has Sony warranty coverage. Before paying, check the seller’s written terms for the return deadline, who pays return shipping, warranty duration and coverage, proof-of-purchase requirements, and any country or region restrictions. Sony’s US manuals and warranty resources include a warranty PDF dated July 15, 2026, but the terms for an individual sale still need to be confirmed with that seller.
Compare offers by risk-adjusted value
Compare each offer across four factors: documented condition and inspection, confidence in battery and function, return and warranty protection, and the total value after accounting for missing accessories or likely replacement costs. A lower price may not be a better deal if the seller refuses returns, cannot explain the battery’s condition, or omits items you need. No population-level failure, battery-degradation or return-rate figure is established here, so judge the specific unit and its protections rather than relying on an assumed refurbishing standard.
