Buy refurbished or discounted noise-canceling headphones only after checking who stands behind the listing, what its warranty and return terms actually cover, and whether the total price beats a new model on sale. Then verify the condition, battery promise, accessories, fit, and core functions—especially while you can still return the headphones. “Refurbished,” “renewed,” and cosmetic grade labels do not promise the same process across sellers.
Start with the seller and refurbishment process
Find out who actually inspected or refurbished the headphones: the manufacturer, a named refurbishing partner, or an independent marketplace seller. The word “refurbished” alone does not establish a universal testing standard, battery condition, or parts policy.
Manufacturer programs offer specific examples, not guarantees for other listings. Bose says products in its direct Certified Refurbished program are restored and tested by Bose, not a third-party refurbisher, and that genuine replacement parts are used where needed. Harman’s refurbishing guide says products must pass testing of their original features and specifications. These are vendor descriptions of their own programs, not independent test results; check that the listing is covered by the program being described.

Ask or look for written details on what was tested, whether worn parts were replaced, and whether replacement parts are original or third-party. If the seller does not identify the refurbisher or explain its process, treat that uncertainty as part of the buying decision.

Read the warranty and return terms for this exact listing
Do not assume a policy applies just because the headphones carry a familiar brand name. The seller, product, country, and sales channel can affect the terms. Check the listing’s warranty and return policy before paying, and save a copy of the terms shown at purchase.
- Confirm the warranty duration, when coverage begins, exclusions, and who handles a claim.
- Check the return deadline, whether a trial or inspection period starts at delivery, and whether return shipping is your responsibility.
- Find out whether the warranty covers battery deterioration, faults, or only specified defects.
- Verify that the seller—not merely the product manufacturer—accepts the return for this particular purchase.
As current program examples checked on October 7, 2026, Bose says direct Certified Refurbished purchases include a one-year limited warranty and 30-day returns. Sennheiser’s Certified Refurbished page states a six-month manufacturer warranty. Harman’s US support page says refurbished products have a 30-day return period and the warranty conditions of a similar new product. Those are statements for the named programs and region; they are not general rules for refurbished headphones or substitutes for the terms on your listing.
Compare the total price with a new sale price
Compare the checkout total for the exact model—not its original launch price—with the price of a new unit currently on sale. Include shipping, tax, missing accessories, and any replacement cushions or other parts you may need. A discounted new pair can be a better value than a refurbished one; Harman specifically warns that refurbished products can temporarily cost as much as or more than a similar new product on sale. No fixed refurbished discount is established by these examples.

- Block the World, Keep the Music: Four built-in mics work together to filter out background noise — whether you're in a packed office, on a crowded commute, or moving through a busy street — so every beat comes through clean and clear. (Not available in AUX-in mode.)
- Two Ways to Hear More: BassUp technology delivers deep, punchy bass and crisp highs in wireless mode — then step it up further by plugging in the included AUX cable to unlock Hi‑Res certified audio for studio-level clarity.
- 40 Hours. 5-Minute Top-Up: With ANC on, a single charge keeps you listening through days of commutes and long-haul flights. Running low? Just 5 minutes plugged in gives you 4 more hours — so you're never stuck waiting.
- Two Devices, Zero Hassle: Stay connected to your laptop and phone at the same time. Audio switches automatically to whichever device needs you — so a call never interrupts your flow, and getting back to your playlist is just as easy. Designed for commuters and remote workers who move smoothly between work and personal listening throughout the day.
- Your Sound, Your Rules: The soundcore app puts everything at your fingertips — dials your ideal EQ with presets or build your own, flip between ANC, Normal, and Transparency modes on the fly, or wind down with built-in white noise. One app, total control.
If prices are close, the new unit may be preferable when its condition, battery history, included accessories, or warranty is clearer. If the refurbished listing is cheaper, decide whether the savings are worth any uncertainty that remains after checking the seller’s terms.
Decode the condition grade and inspect what is included
A grade such as “excellent,” “very good,” or “good” means little without that seller’s written definition. eBay’s published criteria distinguish cosmetic wear and parts by grade; that does not make its grading a universal standard. Harman says its refurbished products may have minor cosmetic imperfections and that needed parts can be replaced.
Check the exact model number, grade definition, listing photos, and included accessories. Look closely at ear cushions, headband, hinges, ports, buttons, and charging contacts. Confirm whether a charging cable, audio cable, carrying case, or other expected accessory is included. Neither a grade nor the word “refurbished” by itself establishes that the battery is new or that all parts are original.

Judge battery life from the unit, not the model’s headline claim
Manufacturer runtime figures describe model capability under stated conditions; they do not establish the remaining capacity of a particular used pair. Bose lists up to 24 hours of playback with noise canceling turned on for its cited QuietComfort model. Sennheiser advertises up to 50 hours of playtime for the refurbished ACCENTUM Wireless. These are model-specific manufacturer claims, not a used-unit battery guarantee.
Look for an explicit battery-condition promise in the listing. If you buy, charge the headphones fully and check how they perform during ordinary use before the return period expires. Bose notes that its cited QuietComfort model can play passively after the battery is depleted, but noise canceling and Active EQ will not function without power; passive playback is not a substitute for powered features if those are why you want the headphones.

- INCREDIBLE SOUND: Custom acoustic platform delivers rich, balanced audio for music, calls and everyday listening.
- LOSSLESS AUDIO SUPPORT: USB-C lossless audio and sound profiles optimize music quality across devices and environments. Additional option to use the 3.5 mm cable for a standard analog experience.
- ACTIVE NOISE CANCELLING (ANC): block distractions at work, on flights or during your daily commute. Or use Transparency mode to let the sounds of your environment mix in with your music.
- SEAMLESS WIRELESS CONNECTIVITY: One-touch pairing with Apple & Android for easy switching across devices.
- SPATIAL AUDIO IMMERSION: Personalized dynamic head tracking, 360-degree sound for movies, music and immersive everyday listening.
- Charge and pair: Confirm that the headphones charge, power on, and connect reliably to your phone or computer.
- Check both sides: Play familiar audio and listen for unequal volume, dropouts, hiss, rattling, crackle, or distortion.
- Test listening modes: Turn ANC on and off; check transparency or ambient mode if the model offers it. Listen in a quiet place and with ordinary background noise.
- Try controls and microphone: Test buttons or touch controls, volume, calls, and microphone pickup. Check any app features you expect to use.
- Check wired use if relevant: If the model supports a cable, verify the wired connection and controls you depend on.
- Assess fit and comfort: Wear the headphones long enough to notice pressure, loose hinges, or worn cushions. A poor seal or uncomfortable fit can undermine the listening experience and ANC.
Check whether cushions are removable and available for the exact model. Do not assume generic pads will fit or sound the same based on appearance alone; compatibility and acoustic performance can differ. Bose says its refurbished products may receive new ear cushions, but that statement applies to its program, not every seller.
Use a side-by-side check when comparing listings
Compare the exact model and seller on the factors that affect value and risk. A lower price is not automatically the better buy if testing, battery condition, returns, or included parts are unclear.
