Before buying headphones on sale, check that their fit, comfort, connection type, and noise control suit how you will use them. Then verify the live listing’s price, seller, warranty, and return or exchange terms. A discount is only useful if the headphones work for you and the purchase terms make the risk acceptable.
Start with where and how you will use them
Headphone choice depends on your routine: commuting, exercising, working at a desk, and listening at home can call for different designs. Consumer Reports’ headphone buying guide describes three common form factors, each with trade-offs in portability, fit, and isolation.

| Over-ear | Surround the ears; the earcup seal provides some isolation from outside sound. They may be less convenient to carry, and some glasses or earring wearers find this style uncomfortable. |
There is no universally best style. If you expect to wear headphones for long sessions, prioritize comfort as much as listed features. If possible, try the fit; otherwise, check whether the seller allows returns or exchanges.

Check comfort and fit, not just features
A headline feature cannot compensate for headphones that hurt, slip, or do not seal comfortably. Think about how long you will wear them and whether they need to stay in place while you move. Earbuds may not suit every ear, and on-ear or over-ear designs may interact awkwardly with glasses or earrings.

- Consider whether the design feels secure for your usual activity.
- Check whether the headband, earcups, or eartips are likely to remain comfortable for your expected wear time.
- For earbuds, look for fit options or sizing information in the listing if available.
- For online orders, read the actual seller’s return and exchange terms before buying.
Decide whether you need wired or wireless headphones
Choose based on the devices you use and whether you want to rely on a battery. Most modern earbuds pair with phones over Bluetooth, while wired models are still available. Confirm that the connection works with your device and routine rather than assuming a particular headphone will be compatible.
- Bluetooth: convenient when you want to move freely, but requires charging and compatible devices.
- Wired: avoids headphone battery dependence, but check that your device has a compatible connection or that you have the required adapter.
Understand what noise cancellation can—and cannot—do
Noise-cancelling headphones use microphones to monitor external sound and generate opposing frequencies that reduce some of it. This can help in noisy environments, but it does not mean silence, and performance varies by model. A good physical fit and seal also affect how much outside sound you hear, even without active noise cancellation.

When comparing options, distinguish active noise cancellation from passive isolation created by the fit of the earbuds or earcups. Choose the feature for your environment, but do not treat the label alone as proof that one model will block more sound than another.
Check the sale listing and purchase terms
A sale label does not establish that a price is unusually low or that the product is right for you. Check the current listing and seller directly; prices, availability, and purchase terms can vary.

- Confirm the exact product. Match the model name and version, form factor, and connection type to the headphones you intended to buy.
- Review the current price. Compare like-for-like products and make sure the amount shown is the price you will pay at checkout. No general benchmark or verified price history establishes that a particular offer is the best price.
- Identify the seller. Check who is selling the item, not only which marketplace or retailer hosts the listing.
- Read the warranty details. Verify what coverage applies to this product and purchase, and who provides it.
- Check returns and exchanges. Look for the applicable deadline, conditions, and any stated costs, especially if you cannot test the fit beforehand. Consumer Reports advises: “If you buy online, check return policies to make sure your purchase can be returned or exchanged for another model.”
Compare candidates using your priorities
Put the factors that matter to you first rather than comparing feature counts alone. For example, someone buying earbuds for a commute may prioritize secure fit, portability, Bluetooth, and noise control; someone listening at home may put long-session comfort, connection compatibility, and the earcup seal higher. The better sale is the candidate that meets your needs at acceptable terms—not simply the one with the biggest discount claim.
