Before buying final-sale clothing online, verify the exact item’s return terms, check fit and condition details, calculate the full delivered cost, and confirm what protections apply to the seller and your payment method. “Final sale” often limits a store’s voluntary returns, but it does not by itself establish that every legal right disappears; the answer depends on your location and the transaction.
1. Confirm what “final sale” means for this exact item
Do not assume every retailer uses the phrase the same way. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns that sellers often have different refund and return policies for sale items, especially clearance merchandise: FTC guidance on online shopping.
Read the product page and then look again in the cart or checkout for the item’s specific notice. Save the wording, including any exceptions. Confirm whether the seller allows a return at all and, if so, whether the remedy is a refund, exchange, or store credit; note the deadline, return-shipping responsibility, and any fees. Check the terms for the item and the market to which it will be shipped.

Levi’s, for example, says its items marked “Final Sale” are not eligible for returns, refunds, or exchanges, including for sizing or change-of-mind reasons. Its policy also directs customers to contact support about defective, damaged, or incorrect items. This is Levi’s policy, not a rule for other retailers: Levi’s final-sale policy.

2. Judge fit using item-specific measurements
A size label alone cannot tell you how a particular garment will fit. Start with the product’s own chart and measurement notes, and check whether the figures describe the garment or the person who will wear it. Compare like with like: a body measurement should not be treated as though it were a finished garment measurement.
GU’s U.S. measuring guide says fit may vary by 0.5 to 1.15 inches (0.5 to 1.18 inches for a belt), depending on product and fabric. That is GU’s guidance, not an industry-wide tolerance: GU’s How to Measure guide.

If the listing lacks enough measurements to make a reasonable comparison, ask the seller in writing before ordering. If you cannot get an answer, treat the unknown fit as a real cost of buying an item you may not be able to return.

3. Inspect the full description and condition
Read beyond the headline and photographs. Check the stated fabric, care instructions, color, included components, condition, and any disclosed flaw. Look for close-out or similar wording and make sure the images and description appear to refer to the exact version you intend to buy. If a detail that matters to you is missing, ask the seller before checkout and keep the response.

4. Calculate the delivered cost and timing
Compare the amount you will actually pay, not just the crossed-out or advertised item price. Add shipping, handling, taxes, and other disclosed fees. Check the delivery estimate and what the seller promises; a low price may be poor value if the listing leaves important fit or condition questions unanswered and the item cannot be returned.
For U.S. orders, the FTC says sellers must ship within the time they promise. If they do not state a shipping time, a 30-day default applies under the FTC rule. See the FTC’s online-shopping guidance for the rule and its details.

5. Check the seller, marketplace, and available recourse
Identify who is actually selling the garment and how to contact them. On a marketplace, the platform’s process may differ from the seller’s own return policy; some marketplaces leave refunds and returns to the buyer and seller. Find out whether the platform’s protection covers this seller and item, what situations qualify, and how quickly you must file a claim. Keep messages with the seller.

6. Choose a payment method with a dispute process and keep records
The FTC recommends paying by credit card where possible and keeping receipts and confirmations. Credit- and debit-card protections differ, and a card dispute or chargeback is not guaranteed to succeed. It is a possible route if something goes wrong, not a replacement for checking the return terms. The FTC explains steps to take when an online purchase has a problem in its online-shopping problem guide and provides further information about billing disputes in its Fair Credit Billing Act information.
Before the listing disappears, save the product page, final-sale notice, return policy, receipt, order confirmation, and relevant correspondence. If a problem arises, act promptly: retailer, marketplace, and payment-provider deadlines may apply.
7. Understand the difference between store policy and legal rights
A retailer may set restrictive voluntary return terms for eligible purchases, but “final sale” should not be read as proof that all statutory rights vanish. Legal rights depend on where you live, the seller, the type of transaction, and the facts. The FTC’s consumer guidance is U.S.-specific, and retailer policies can vary by market.
