Before buying an Apple product on sale, verify the exact model and configuration, calculate the final price after conditions or fees, and read the seller’s return and warranty terms. For a pre-owned iPhone, also check its battery, parts history, carrier lock, condition and Activation Lock. Policies differ by country and retailer, so use the seller’s current written terms and your local consumer protections—not the headline discount—as your guide.
1. Confirm the exact product and configuration
Start with the listing details, not just the product family name. Apple devices with similar names can differ by generation, screen size, storage, connectivity, or included accessories. Make sure the sale unit is the specific version you intend to buy, and compare like with like when checking prices.
- Record the model or generation and, where listed, the model number.
- Check storage, screen size, connectivity, color and included accessories.
- For an iPhone, confirm whether it is unlocked or tied to a carrier or plan.
- For a Mac or iPad, verify the configuration that matters to you, such as memory, storage, or connectivity.
Do not assume that a product with the same broad name has the same specifications as another listing. If the seller omits a detail that affects your decision, ask for written confirmation before ordering.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMake the comparison practical: put the model, generation and configuration side by side for each offer you are considering. A cheaper listing is not a like-for-like deal if it has less storage, a different screen size, a different connectivity option or fewer included items. If a listing uses vague wording such as “latest model” or leaves out an important configuration detail, treat that as unresolved rather than assuming it matches the product you want.

Also check whether the listing describes a new, refurbished or pre-owned unit. Those labels matter because they can indicate different condition expectations, inspection histories, warranties and return terms. Confirm that the product page, checkout and eventual receipt all identify the same product and seller.
2. Work out what the sale actually costs
Compare the amount you will really pay for the same configuration. A headline discount may depend on a trade-in, carrier plan, education eligibility, a particular payment method, or another condition. Record the seller, configuration, listed price, conditions and final checkout total so you can compare offers accurately.
- Check whether the displayed price requires a trade-in or account eligibility.
- Include any required plan, financing commitment, fees or other purchase conditions.
- Confirm whether shipping, taxes or other charges change the total at checkout.
- Check what accessories are included; a lower price may be for a different bundle.
Separate an unconditional price reduction from an offer that only applies if you meet conditions. If a trade-in is involved, note that the advertised price may depend on the trade-in being accepted at the expected value. If the offer is tied to a carrier or financing arrangement, consider the service commitment and fees as part of the cost rather than treating the device price in isolation. No single calculation suits every offer, so compare the total obligations attached to the specific listing.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Keep a simple record of the offer before checkout: seller name, exact configuration, price, qualifying conditions and final checkout total. That makes it easier to compare retailers and to spot when a price comparison is really between different products or purchase arrangements. Do not count an advertised saving as guaranteed until you have checked the eligibility requirements and the amount due.
Apple’s Certified Refurbished page currently advertises savings of up to 15%, but that is a changeable promotional claim, not a guaranteed discount on every product or a comparison with every retailer’s price. The same page’s live inventory and prices can change; check the exact listing at the time you buy. Apple Certified Refurbished
3. Identify who is selling it and what protection applies
Check the seller named on the product page, at checkout and on the receipt. A product sold by Apple, an authorized reseller, a marketplace seller or an independent refurbisher may have different returns and warranty terms. In the United States and Canada, Apple says authorized resellers set their own return and refund policies. Apple’s U.S. shopping help
On a marketplace, distinguish the platform from the actual seller. Confirm who will take payment, who will issue the receipt, and whom you would contact if you need a return or warranty service. Do not assume that a familiar marketplace name means the product is sold directly by that company or by Apple. If the named seller changes between the listing and checkout, pause and review the applicable terms again.
Read the seller’s current written policy before paying, and save a copy of the listing and terms. Look for:
- Who handles a return or refund, and how to contact them.
- The return window, how it is calculated, and any condition or packaging rules.
- Whether opened, activated, clearance or discounted items have different exclusions.
- Who provides the warranty, how long it lasts, and what it covers.
- What proof of purchase you need for a return, repair or warranty claim.
Ask what happens if the item arrives different from its listing or has a fault, and whether the seller requires you to contact it before returning the product. A stated return period is only useful if you know when it begins and what steps the seller requires. Keep the written answers alongside the listing. Do not infer a policy from another retailer’s rules or from Apple’s own terms.

Apple’s U.S. shopping help says that products bought through other retailers must be returned to those retailers under their policies. Its Apple Store return terms do not create an automatic return window at every retailer. Local statutory rights may also affect your options, so check the rules where you live. Apple’s U.S. shopping help
Warranty coverage is a separate question from the return window. Identify the warranty provider and duration in the terms for the exact product and seller. Apple says Apple Certified Refurbished products have a standard one-year limited warranty, but that example should not be assumed to apply to third-party refurbished items or every region. If a seller promises its own coverage, read what it covers and how a claim is made rather than relying on a short description in an advert.

4. Compare sale stock with Apple Certified Refurbished and pre-owned devices
A discounted new device, an Apple Certified Refurbished product and a third-party pre-owned device are not equivalent merely because they share a model name. Compare the exact configuration, final out-of-pocket cost, condition, included items, return terms, warranty provider and seller reliability.
| Option | What to verify | Warranty and return information established here |
|---|---|---|
| New device on sale | Exact model and configuration; whether the discount has conditions; seller identity; included items; return exclusions. | Terms depend on the seller and purchase channel. Apple says authorized U.S. and Canada resellers set their own return and refund policies. Apple’s U.S. shopping help |
| Apple Certified Refurbished | Exact live listing, configuration, availability and price. | Apple’s U.S. shopping help describes functionality testing, replacement of defective modules identified in testing, cleaning and inspection, repackaging and a final quality inspection. It states a standard one-year limited warranty and a return request within 14 calendar days of receipt. These are U.S. Apple Store terms; confirm the terms for your country and listing. Apple’s U.S. shopping help |
| Third-party refurbished or pre-owned | Who refurbished or owned it; actual condition; parts history; battery; lock status; accessories; seller’s return and warranty terms. | Not established as a common policy: check the specific seller’s written terms. Apple recommends checking the seller’s return process and what its certification means when buying a pre-owned iPhone. Apple’s pre-owned iPhone guide |
The value comparison is not just “new versus used.” A lower-priced pre-owned phone may have a condition or parts history you need to understand, while a refurbished product’s process and warranty depend on who refurbished it. Compare the out-of-pocket amount with what is included and the level of protection documented by the seller. If a product is tied to a carrier plan or financed, include the commitment and fees when comparing it with an outright purchase.
Apple’s U.S. shopping help describes its own refurbishment process as functionality testing, replacing defective modules identified in testing, cleaning and inspection, repackaging and a final quality inspection. That provides specific information about Apple Certified Refurbished products; it does not establish what another refurbisher does. For a third-party listing, ask what “refurbished” means in that seller’s program and what checks, parts or warranty are included.
Apple’s Certified Refurbished store lists categories including Mac, iPad, iPhone, Watch, AirPods, Apple TV, HomePod and accessories. Its inventory is live; a product being listed now does not mean it will remain available or at the same price. Apple describes Certified Refurbished products as function-tested and backed by a one-year limited warranty. Apple Certified Refurbished
For example, Apple’s store listed a refurbished unlocked iPhone 16 with 128GB storage in August 2026. Treat that as an illustration of a live listing, not a lasting stock or price claim. Check the current listing, configuration and terms before comparing it with a sale device. The right choice depends on the buyer’s needs and the exact offer; the available information does not establish one option as the best value for everyone.
5. Inspect a pre-owned iPhone before committing
For an in-person purchase, inspect the phone and test it before paying if possible. For an online purchase, do these checks as soon as it arrives, while the seller’s return window is open. Apple recommends buying from a reliable seller, understanding the return process and checking condition, battery health and parts history. Apple’s pre-owned iPhone guide
Before you meet a seller or open a delivery, know how much time you have to act under the seller’s return policy. Apple’s checks are useful for evaluating the device, but they do not replace reading the seller’s process or documenting a problem promptly. If you are buying in person, do not feel pressured to skip inspection; if a check cannot be completed, decide whether you are comfortable proceeding without that information.

Check physical condition and basic functions
- Look for scratches, scuffs, dents and damage around connectors.
- Confirm the phone turns on and charges.
- Test Wi-Fi, buttons, camera, speakers and microphone.
Inspect the exterior in good light and look closely at the connector area as well as the body. A screen that lights up is not a substitute for checking basic functions: try the buttons, camera, audio and Wi-Fi. If buying online, perform those checks promptly after delivery and compare the actual device with the listing while you still have the seller’s return period to use.
Review parts history
On a supported iPhone, open Settings > General > About and look for Parts and Service History. Apple says this section may appear on iOS 15.2 or later, depending on the model and replaced parts. An “Unknown” part label can mean that installation is incomplete, the part is non-genuine or previously used, or the part is not functioning as expected. The label is a reason to ask questions and assess the device; do not treat it as proof of only one cause. Apple’s pre-owned iPhone guide
The section may not be available on every model or in every circumstance, so its absence does not, on its own, establish a particular parts history. If it is present, read any displayed information rather than reducing it to a simple pass/fail. Ask the seller about an Unknown label and compare the explanation with the condition and other information you can verify. Apple’s guidance gives several possible reasons for that label, so avoid assuming a single explanation.
Check battery condition
Open Settings > Battery to check maximum capacity and any battery messages when those details are available. Apple notes that battery health information is not available for unknown or non-genuine batteries, so missing information is not the same as a reassuring battery-health result. Apple’s pre-owned iPhone guide
Use the information the phone displays as one part of your decision, not as a complete condition report. If battery-health details are unavailable, note that uncertainty when comparing the price and ask the seller what is known about the battery. No minimum capacity makes a used iPhone a good purchase in every case, so do not treat any one percentage as a universal cutoff.

Confirm the network lock status
In Settings > General > About, find Network Provider Lock. Apple’s guide says “No SIM restrictions” means the iPhone is unlocked. If it shows a restriction, confirm with the seller and carrier that the phone will work with the network you intend to use. Apple’s pre-owned iPhone guide
Do not confuse a seller’s description with the device’s displayed status. If you need an unlocked phone, check for “No SIM restrictions” on the device. If it is restricted, do not assume it will work with your intended provider or that the seller will be able to change its status later; get a clear answer before committing.
Do not buy a phone with Activation Lock enabled
Apple’s instruction is direct: “Don’t buy an iPhone if Activation Lock is enabled.” If an online purchase arrives showing “iPhone Locked to Owner,” Apple says to return it. Do not rely on a seller’s promise that the lock can be removed later. Apple’s pre-owned iPhone guide
Activation Lock is a stop condition in this checklist, unlike cosmetic wear or an unclear parts label that may call for more questions. If the phone is locked to its owner, do not pay on the assumption that the seller will resolve it after the sale. If it arrives locked, follow Apple’s advice and return it through the seller’s process.

6. Understand Apple’s limited U.S. price-adjustment terms
Apple’s U.S. shopping terms describe a limited process under which a buyer may request a refund or credit if Apple reduces the price of an Apple-branded product within 14 calendar days after receipt. The same terms exclude limited-time price reductions and special sales events such as Black Friday. This is a specific Apple Store policy example, not a general price-match guarantee from Apple or other retailers. Check the current terms that apply to your purchase. Apple’s U.S. shopping terms
This policy should not be your reason for buying at a price you have not checked. It has a defined period and exclusions, and it does not establish that Apple will match another retailer’s price. If you are counting on a later adjustment, verify that the product and price change fit the current terms and contact the relevant seller within the applicable period. Do not assume the same provision applies to purchases outside the U.S. Apple Store.
For products bought from an authorized reseller in the United States or Canada, Apple says the reseller sets its own return and refund policy. Apple describes a limited route for contacting Apple if a reseller refuses a return, with conditions including contacting Apple within 14 days of purchase and providing proof of purchase showing the reseller’s name and address, product/version, purchase date and price. Do not assume this route replaces the reseller’s policy or applies outside the stated context. Apple’s U.S. shopping help
These are separate examples: the price-adjustment terms concern qualifying Apple Store purchases, while the reseller information concerns a specific limited process and proof requirements. Neither is a universal promise that every discounted Apple product can be returned or repriced. For any purchase, the safest starting point is the current written policy of the seller that appears on your receipt.
7. Keep evidence of what you bought
Save the order confirmation, itemized receipt, listing, product specifications, warranty details and return policy. For a qualifying issue, these records help establish the seller, version, purchase date and price. Apple’s reseller-return process in the U.S. and Canada specifically calls for proof of purchase with reseller and product details. Apple’s U.S. shopping help
Before checkout, make sure the receipt will identify the actual seller if you are buying through a marketplace. After delivery, compare the item with the listing and carry out the checks that are relevant to its condition while you still have time to act under the seller’s terms.
Keep copies in a place you can access after the listing disappears or changes. Save not just the amount paid but also the product/version, seller name and address when available, and any conditions attached to the sale. That is particularly important where an offer depends on eligibility or a trade-in, or where you may need to demonstrate what was promised. An itemized receipt is more useful than a payment record that only shows a total.
8. A practical pre-checkout checklist
- Match the exact model, generation and configuration to your needs.
- Calculate the final cost, including any trade-in, carrier, payment or plan conditions.
- Identify the seller and read that seller’s current return, refund and warranty terms.
- For refurbished stock, establish who refurbished it and who provides its warranty.
- For a pre-owned iPhone, plan to check condition, battery, parts history, carrier lock and Activation Lock immediately.
- Confirm what proof of purchase you will receive and save the listing and terms.
- Check local consumer rights and the terms for your country; the Apple policy examples above are U.S.-specific except for Apple’s Ireland-hosted iPhone support guide.
If any essential detail is missing—such as the precise configuration, seller identity, return rules or warranty provider—resolve it before checkout. When you receive a used iPhone, start the inspection promptly rather than waiting until the return window is nearly over. A sale is only comparable once you know what product you are buying, what it will cost in total and what options you have if it does not match the listing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a retailer have to accept a return on a discounted Apple product?
Not necessarily. Apple says authorized resellers in the United States and Canada set their own return and refund policies, and products bought through other retailers must be returned under those retailers’ terms. Check the seller’s written policy and local consumer rules before purchase.

Is Apple Certified Refurbished the same as third-party refurbished?
No. Apple describes its own refurbishment process, one-year limited warranty and U.S. return terms. A third-party refurbisher’s process, coverage and return policy must be checked with that seller.
What should I do if a used iPhone says “iPhone Locked to Owner”?
Do not proceed with the purchase. Apple says not to buy an iPhone with Activation Lock enabled; if an online purchase arrives in that state, Apple advises returning it.
How can I tell whether a sale price is actually a good deal?
Compare the same model and configuration, then calculate the total price after any trade-in, plan, eligibility or payment conditions and checkout charges. A headline discount is not necessarily an unconditional reduction.

No. Apple’s U.S. shopping terms describe a limited price-adjustment process for qualifying Apple Store purchases within 14 calendar days after receipt, with exclusions including limited-time reductions and special sales events such as Black Friday. It is not a general price-match guarantee.
What does an “Unknown” part label mean on a pre-owned iPhone?
Apple says it can indicate incomplete installation, a non-genuine or previously used part, or a part that is not functioning as expected. It can have several causes, so ask the seller and assess the device rather than assuming one explanation.
What does “No SIM restrictions” mean on an iPhone?
Apple’s pre-owned iPhone guide says this status under Settings > General > About means the device is unlocked. If you need an unlocked phone, check the setting on the device rather than relying only on the listing.
Can I rely on a used iPhone’s battery-health reading?
Check Settings > Battery for maximum capacity and messages when available, but Apple notes that health information is unavailable for unknown or non-genuine batteries. Missing information is not a reassuring battery-health result, and no universal minimum capacity is established.

The Bottom Line
Before paying, match the exact Apple product and configuration, compare the real total cost, and read the terms of the seller named at checkout. Keep your receipt and listing. For a pre-owned iPhone, inspect its condition, battery, parts history and network lock—and do not buy it with Activation Lock enabled. Apple policy examples vary by country and purchase channel, so confirm current local terms rather than assuming a sale has a universal return or price-match guarantee.
