Before buying an open-box TV online, verify what kind of product it is, what is included, the exact unit’s condition, the seller’s return terms, and who provides warranty coverage. Then compare the complete delivered cost with the same model new. Policies differ by seller, country, sales channel, and listing, so the listing’s written terms—not the label alone—should decide whether the discount is worth the risk.
First, identify what “open-box” means in this listing
Condition labels are not universal standards. For example, Best Buy describes its own Outlet Center Buying Guide as distinguishing among these categories:
- Clearance: new, factory-sealed stock.
- Open-box: an item returned under the retailer’s return policy.
- Refurbished: an item repaired and restored.
- Pre-owned: a used item.
Those definitions describe Best Buy’s terminology; another retailer or marketplace seller may use the same words differently. Do not infer how long a TV was used, whether it was repaired, or what inspection it received from “open-box” alone. Confirm the seller and read the listing’s own description.

A grade is only useful if you know what it means for that seller and that particular TV. Best Buy says its open-box products are tested or inspected for proper working order and physical appearance, while warning that conditions vary. Its guide says some Good and Fair items may have missing parts or accessories. These are Best Buy-specific statements, not guarantees for other listings.

Review the photos, condition notes, and included-items list. Look for disclosed screen or frame scratches, cracks, pressure marks, discoloration, dead or stuck pixels, image retention or burn-in, damaged ports, and missing components. Confirm whether the remote, stand or feet, power cable, screws, manuals, and any other required accessories are included. Best Buy describes its Excellent grade as looking brand new without physical flaws, scratches, or scuffs, and including original parts and accessories or suitable replacements; do not assume another seller’s “Excellent” means the same thing.
If the photos or description do not answer an important question, ask the seller before ordering. For a display model, ask whether it was used as a demonstration set and whether usage hours are available. There is no standard usage-hour disclosure or universal acceptable threshold established here, so treat the answer as useful unit-specific information rather than a pass/fail rule.

Find out what was tested
Ask what the seller checked, especially if the listing does not describe an inspection process. If the TV can be inspected before shipment or pickup, test the picture and screen uniformity, remote and physical controls, inputs, speakers, and network connection. Also check model-specific features you intend to use, such as particular HDMI capabilities or smart-TV functions.

Check the return policy and warranty separately
A return window and a warranty are different protections. Before paying, find the terms for the exact TV and sales channel, including the deadline, exclusions, return method and address, shipping or freight costs, packaging requirements, and how to report damage or defects. Confirm whether open-box televisions are treated differently from new products.
Retailer examples show why the exact terms matter. Best Buy says its outlet items are covered by its Return and Exchange Promise. By contrast, Samsung Canada’s terms for the covered sales channels generally exclude home-entertainment products, including TVs with broken seals, from returns, exchanges, or refunds, except in connection with a valid warranty claim. Separately, identify the warranty provider: the manufacturer, retailer, marketplace seller, or refurbisher. Verify the term, when it starts, any serial-number or registration requirements, parts and labor coverage, panel exclusions, service area, and claim process. Best Buy says manufacturer warranty coverage varies by product. Newegg says its open-box products usually do not have manufacturer or vendor warranty or technical support, and recommends contacting the manufacturer to check possible coverage. Read the applicable Newegg Product Disclaimers and confirm coverage for the exact unit rather than assuming a manufacturer warranty transfers.

If a protection plan is offered, compare its written coverage, exclusions, duration, service fees, and remedies with the existing warranty and return window. Best Buy says Geek Squad Protection can be added to outlet purchases, but availability and terms depend on the item and offer.

Compare the complete price, not just the discount
Match the exact model number and screen size. A similar series name or appearance is not enough to establish that two TVs are the same product. Compare the open-box offer with the current price of that exact model new or factory-sealed on clearance, then include the costs that apply to your setup and potential return:
- Delivery and taxes.
- Installation, setup, or wall mounting if needed.
- Return shipping, freight, or other return charges.
- Any protection plan you are considering.
There is no established universal discount percentage that makes an open-box TV a good buy. An attractive price may not compensate for a damaged panel, missing essentials, an expensive return, or unclear coverage; a smaller discount may suit a buyer who has confirmed the condition and protections. Make the decision from the specific unit’s condition, terms, and total cost.
Use these questions to compare offers

| Total cost | What is the delivered and installed price, including the potential cost of returning it? |
Inspect and test the TV as soon as it arrives
- Save the purchase details. Keep the order page, condition description, seller messages, invoice, and delivery paperwork.
- Document the carton. Photograph visible shipping damage before unpacking, and retain the box and packing materials until testing is complete and the return period has passed.
- Set up and test the basics. Check the image across different content, screen uniformity, pixels, discoloration or image retention; test the speakers, remote, physical controls, Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and HDMI ports.
- Verify completeness and report problems promptly. Check the stand or mounting hardware and all listed accessories. Record any defect and contact the seller using the order’s stated reporting process and deadline.
Samsung Canada’s terms, for example, instruct customers to inspect the product and carton and set reporting deadlines for certain damage, defects, or missing components. Those instructions apply to the covered Canadian channel; follow the process and deadline attached to your own order.
