Before buying an older smart TV, verify support and the apps you need for its exact model and region, then test the screen, ports, sound and network in person. Check the seller’s written terms and add the cost of missing parts, repairs or a streaming device to the asking price. A TV’s age or brand alone cannot tell you whether its software and apps still work.
1. Identify the exact model and check its support status
Ask the seller for a clear photo of the model label before making a trip. Use the full model number—not just the brand or screen size—to find the manufacturer’s support page for the TV’s country or region. Check the available manual, current firmware, update instructions and any notice about ended downloads.
Support can vary within a brand. For example, Sony’s support notice lists certain older TV models whose software update downloads end on different dates. Sony says that a model past its listed termination date can no longer download software updates from its support website. That does not by itself establish whether every built-in app still works, so check apps separately.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2. Verify the apps and connections you will actually use
Check each streaming service
Write down the services you expect to use, then check their availability for that specific model, region and smart-TV platform. An app shown on a newer TV from the same manufacturer—or in an old review—is not proof that it is available and working on the used set now.

- Access thousands of shows with Fire TV - Watch over 1.5 million streaming movies and TV episodes with access to thousands of channels, apps and Alexa skills, including Prime Video, Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, YouTube, Apple TV+, Disney+, ESPN+, Sling TV, Paramount+, and other services right from this TV.*

If the display works but its built-in apps do not meet your needs, an external streaming device may be an option. Consumer Reports discusses using a streaming device to access services unavailable on a TV. Confirm that the TV has a working HDMI input compatible with the device. A streamer cannot fix a faulty screen, add missing physical inputs, or guarantee that every setup will be compatible.
Match the inputs to your equipment
Check the number and type of HDMI and other inputs, and test every port you need. Confirm compatibility with your game console, receiver, antenna or streaming player rather than assuming that a connector alone guarantees the features you want. Check screen size and resolution against your needs, too. HDR is intended to make images more realistic, vibrant and detailed, according to the European Commission’s electronic-displays guidance; an HDR label alone does not show how well one older TV performs compared with another.

3. Test the TV in person
Do not rely on a clean exterior or the seller’s description. Turn the set on and spend enough time using it to notice problems that may not appear immediately. Ask the seller to disclose known faults, and try the features you intend to use.
- Screen: View bright, dark and uniform images, as well as ordinary video. Look for dead pixels, lines, image retention, uneven brightness, flicker and backlight problems.
- Sound: Play audio at a normal listening level and listen for distortion or intermittent dropouts.
- Remote and controls: Try the remote’s main buttons, navigation and volume controls. Check the TV’s physical controls if they matter to you.
- Ports: Connect a source to each HDMI input you need and confirm that the picture and sound work. Check other required inputs as well.
- Network and smart features: Connect to Wi-Fi and open the services or features that matter to you. Test the tuner if you plan to use one.
These are practical buyer checks, not a formal manufacturer inspection standard. If the seller will not let you test a function that is important to your purchase, treat that uncertainty as a risk rather than assuming it works.

4. Check repair prospects and calculate the full cost
Ask whether repair documentation and parts are available for the model. If the seller discloses a defect, get a repair estimate where possible and include the cost—and the risk of an uncertain repair—in your decision.
Availability rules depend on location and product scope. In the EU, European Commission ecodesign guidance says that, for covered electronic displays, specified readily breakable parts, repair instructions and software updates must be available to consumers and repairers within three weeks for at least seven years after a model is no longer in production. This is not a promise of free repair, a guarantee that every component is available, or a worldwide rule.

5. Confirm what is included and get the terms in writing
Before paying, make a written record of the model and serial numbers, the condition the seller described, known defects, included accessories, return period and any warranty terms. Check whether the stand, remote, mounting hardware and cables are included, and plan how to transport the TV safely.

Find out whether you are buying from a trader or a private individual, since protections can differ by seller and location. Your Europe’s consumer guidance says the EU legal guarantee covers software included with a product and that updates should keep it usable and cyber-secure; purchases from private individuals are generally outside EU consumer rules. In the United States, the FTC’s connected-device guidance advises checking support policies and whether a warranty transfers. Review the terms that apply where you live rather than assuming a used purchase carries the same coverage as a new one.
6. Reset it before connecting your accounts
Once you have bought the TV, factory-reset it before signing in to streaming or other accounts. Review its privacy settings and available support information. The FTC’s advice for connected devices includes resetting devices and reviewing privacy settings as well as checking support policies.
