Before you buy, verify the seller and return terms, the iPhone’s exact model and condition, whether it will work with your carrier, and how you can pay safely. For a used or refurbished phone, also check Activation Lock, battery health, and parts history. A big discount or an HTTPS address alone does not prove the listing is trustworthy.
Check the seller, listing, and full terms
Assess the company and the specific seller separately. On a marketplace, the platform’s protections may vary by seller or item; do not assume they cover every problem. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends checking ratings and recent comments across multiple sources, looking for usable contact information, and reading the actual shipping, refund, and return terms. Ratings can be manipulated, so treat them as one signal rather than proof.
Before paying, save a copy of the listing and the seller’s identity, the advertised condition, the promised delivery date, and any messages. For a used phone, ask for photos of the actual device if the listing shows only stock images. Check how many days you have to return it, who pays return shipping, whether a restocking fee applies, and whether sale or clearance items have different conditions. The FTC notes that HTTPS encrypts a site connection, but it does not establish that the seller or site is legitimate. An unusually low price is a reason to investigate, not proof of a bargain.
Confirm the exact iPhone and carrier compatibility
Match the model, storage, and condition
Make sure the listing identifies the exact iPhone model and storage capacity, and says whether it is new, used, refurbished, or open-box. Compare the total cost—including taxes, shipping, and fees—not just the headline discount. Ask the seller to clarify any missing or conflicting details in writing.

Verify the lock status and intended carrier
Do not rely only on “unlocked” in a listing title or a seller’s verbal assurance. Before checkout, get written confirmation of the phone’s lock status and check that the model will work with your carrier and plan. Ask the carrier about compatibility, including eSIM support if you need it.
When you have the phone, open Settings > General > About and check Carrier Lock. Apple says “No SIM restrictions” means the iPhone is unlocked; a carrier name means it can be used only with that carrier. Apple’s U.S. Store also says iPhones financed through the AT&T Installment Plan, T-Mobile Equipment Installment Plan, or Verizon Device Payment Program remain carrier-locked until paid in full. For a used or refurbished iPhone, ask about condition and history
Before buying, ask about physical damage, battery health, and parts or service history. Find out how the seller certifies refurbished devices and what that certification covers. Apple recommends understanding the seller’s return policy and certification process when buying a preowned iPhone; its preowned iPhone guidance also warns against buying an Activation Locked device.

On supported devices running iOS 15.2 or later, check Settings > General > About for Parts and Service History. Availability and details depend on the model and replacement history. “Genuine Apple Part” indicates a replacement made with a genuine Apple part using genuine parts and processes. “Unknown” can indicate incomplete installation, a nongenuine or previously used part, or a part that is not functioning as expected. Treat the entry as useful information, not as a complete record for every iPhone.
Do not buy a phone that remains Activation Locked. Apple’s instruction is direct: “If you bought the iPhone online and you see iPhone Locked to Owner on the screen, return the iPhone.”

Use a payment method with recourse
The FTC recommends paying by credit card where possible or using a secure payment system that offers buyer protections. Avoid sellers who ask for gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, or payment outside the marketplace’s system; moving off-platform may remove protections. Keep the receipt, order confirmation, seller messages, and saved listing. If the phone does not arrive or is materially different from the description, contact the seller and marketplace promptly, then ask your payment provider about dispute options. Deadlines and rights depend on the payment method and jurisdiction.

Compare offers on terms, not just discounts
Use the same checks for each listing so you can compare what you are actually buying:
- Device: exact model, storage, and new, used, refurbished, or open-box condition.
- Seller: the actual seller’s identity, contact details, reputation, and marketplace protections.
- Network: written carrier-lock status and compatibility with your carrier and plan.
- Preowned condition: disclosed damage, battery health, and parts or service history.
- Total cost: item price plus taxes, shipping, and fees.
- Returns and delivery: return deadline, return shipping cost, restocking fees, refund method, and delivery promise.
- Payment and coverage: available payment recourse, warranty terms, and whether the device may qualify for AppleCare.
Check which return policy and coverage apply
Return terms depend on where you buy. Apple’s U.S. Apple Store guidance allows eligible products bought from Apple to be returned within 14 days after receipt, subject to its conditions. Products bought from other retailers must be returned under those retailers’ policies. Apple also describes a limited price-reduction refund or credit policy within 14 calendar days, with exceptions that include limited-time price reductions and special sales events. These are Apple Store terms, not a general return right for every online purchase. Check the live policy for the actual seller and purchase location; local law may also matter. Apple’s coverage lookup lets you check coverage by serial number, but an advertised warranty or lookup result does not replace the actual coverage terms. AppleCare eligibility can depend on the device, its condition, and country or region; Apple says an eligibility check may be required. Confirm the specific phone’s eligibility and the terms that would apply using Apple’s AppleCare eligibility guidance.
