Buy an Early Access survival game only if the build available now is worth its current price to your group—not because a roadmap promises more later. Before paying, check what you can play today, whether everyone can join on their platform, how the shared world works, how actively the developers communicate, and the refund terms for the store where you will buy it.

Is the game worth buying in its current state?

Start with the exact build on sale, not the version you hope it will become. Valve describes Steam Early Access as a way to sell a game while it is still in development; its guidance says, “Early Access titles must deliver a playable game or usable software to the customer at the time of purchase.” Early Access is not a preorder for a finished game delivered later. Valve’s Steamworks Early Access documentation also cautions that development plans and timing are uncertain.

Check what your group can do today

Read the live store page and recent player reports with specific questions in mind: Are the survival loop, crafting, exploration, progression, and co-op modes already playable? Is there enough content for the kind of sessions your group wants? Are known bugs or performance problems likely to disrupt play on your hardware? Evaluate the features that exist now separately from planned systems or future content.

Read the developer’s Early Access answers

On Steam, review the developer’s Early Access questions and answers alongside the current description. Look for an explanation of what is playable, what may change, the expected development period, how feedback is used, and whether the price may change. A vague answer does not by itself show bad intent, but it leaves you with less information about what your purchase buys today. Store descriptions and plans can change, so consult the live listing rather than relying on an old summary.

Are updates and communication credible?

Compare the roadmap with dated update posts, patch notes, and developer announcements. A roadmap is a plan, not proof that a feature is in the game or will arrive on a particular date. Valve tells developers not to make specific promises about future events because completion and timing cannot be known with certainty.

Steam says it adds a notice to an Early Access store page after more than 12 months without a qualifying build or update event. That notice is a useful prompt to investigate, not a universal measure of a game’s quality or a guarantee that development has stopped. Conversely, a recent update shows recent activity; it does not guarantee continued work. Steamworks’ Early Access guidance explains the store-page notice and developer expectations.

Can everyone in your group play together?

Confirm compatibility for every person before anyone buys. Multiplayer does not automatically mean that friends on different storefronts, operating systems, or consoles can join the same session.

  • Player limit: Check the number of players supported in the mode you plan to use.
  • Platforms and storefronts: Verify the exact operating systems, consoles, and PC stores supported, and whether crossplay works across the platforms your group owns.
  • Accounts and versions: Look for required third-party accounts, launchers, subscriptions, or matching game versions.
  • Joining a session: Check whether the game uses invites, a server browser, matchmaking, or another method—and whether friends can join an existing world.

Epic’s cross-platform multiplayer guidelines treat cross-storefront multiplayer as a distinct capability. They describe expectations for games distributed through Epic’s store; they do not establish that any particular unnamed game supports crossplay. Confirm support on the game’s own current listing or official channels.

How does the co-op world and server work?

Find out what happens to the shared world when a session ends. The hosting model affects who must be online, whether progress remains accessible, and whether the group may face extra setup or costs.

  • Player-hosted session: If one player hosts, check whether the world is available only while that player is online and whether others can continue without the host.
  • Persistent world: Verify whether the world keeps running or remains available when the host logs off; do not assume persistence from the game’s use of online multiplayer.
  • Dedicated server: Check whether the game supports a dedicated server, whether it can be self-hosted, and what hardware or setup it requires.
  • External hosting: Determine whether a third-party host or subscription is optional or required, and check the game’s terms before setting up a server.

Server support and terms are specific to each game. Online features can also depend on third-party services, which may change or experience outages. Check the developer’s current server instructions and terms rather than assuming that a server is available or that paid hosting is necessary. Valve’s Steam Subscriber Agreement notes that additional third-party terms may apply.

Does the current price make sense for the content?

Compare the asking price with the content and experience available now, not with a guessed price for the eventual 1.0 release. Valve says there is no universal Early Access pricing rule. Check what the base purchase includes, whether there are paid editions or add-ons, and whether your group considers the current build worth that cost. Planned features, future discounts, and possible price changes are not guaranteed. Steam’s developer guidance discusses Early Access pricing and the need to set expectations about the current product.

What refund rules apply to Early Access?

Refund terms depend on the storefront and the purchase. Check the policy shown for your transaction before buying, and do not assume that one store’s rules apply to another. The policies below are platform-specific statements, not a guarantee that every purchase qualifies; purchase point, region, and statutory rights may affect the outcome.

Store Early Access refund detail What to verify
Steam Early Access playtime counts toward the standard refund limit, according to Valve’s developer documentation. Read the current Steam Refund Policy and the terms shown for your purchase.
Epic Games Store Under Epic’s stated policy, an Early Access or beta PC/Mac product must have less than two hours of runtime for a refund. Check the current Epic Games Store Refund Policy for eligibility and exceptions.
GOG GOG’s Early Access FAQ describes a 30-day refund policy for its Early Access games. Read the current GOG Early Access FAQ and confirm the terms that apply to your order.

For Steam, Valve says Early Access playtime counts toward the standard refund limit; consult the live policy for the current general eligibility rules. Epic and GOG describe different platform terms, and all policies can change. Valve’s Early Access documentation, Epic’s policy, and GOG’s FAQ provide the relevant store-specific details.

How to compare two Early Access co-op games

Use the same criteria for each game, and keep existing features separate from promises. A simple side-by-side check can make it clear when a cheaper game has less playable content, or when a more polished build still cannot accommodate your group.

  • Playable content and stability in the current build
  • Co-op player limit and platform compatibility
  • Session hosting, world persistence, and server options
  • Update history and clarity of developer communication
  • Price for the current build, including relevant paid editions or add-ons
  • Refund terms for the storefront and transaction you will use

Use the live store page and official game channels to verify title-specific details such as the price, player count, crossplay, requirements, server model, version, and roadmap. This general checklist cannot establish those facts for a particular game.
