Before buying an Apple device in an online sale, verify the exact model and seller, understand who handles returns, check the device’s condition and coverage, then compare the full checkout price. A low sale price is not a good deal if the listing is unclear, the return window is short, or a used iPhone is still tied to its previous owner.
What should I check before buying an Apple device online?
Work through the listing in this order. The seller shown at checkout—not simply the marketplace or the Apple logo in the listing—determines which return terms apply.
- Identify the seller. Check the seller name on the product page and again in the order summary. Find that seller’s return policy and confirm who processes a return.
- Pin down the product. Confirm the device type, model or generation, storage or other configuration, and whether it is new, open-box, used, or refurbished. For refurbished products, look for the seller’s definition of the condition grade.
- Read the terms before paying. Check the return period, exclusions, return-shipping responsibility, restocking fees, and what warranty or coverage is included.
- Calculate the full cost. Compare the final checkout total, including tax, shipping, and any required service plan—not just the advertised sale price.
Can I return an Apple product bought from another retailer?
Usually, you must follow the retailer’s return and refund policy. Apple says products bought from other retailers are subject to those retailers’ policies; buying an Apple-branded product does not make it an Apple Store purchase. Check the policy attached to the seller shown on your order page, and review Apple’s authorized reseller return and refund policy for its U.S. and Canada context.

How do I know if a used iPhone is safe to buy?
Stop if Activation Lock is enabled
Apple Support’s advice is direct: “Don’t buy an iPhone if Activation Lock is enabled.” If an iPhone bought online displays “iPhone Locked to Owner,” Apple says to return it. Do not accept a seller’s assurance that the lock can be removed later; consult Apple’s pre-owned iPhone guidance.
Check the serial number and coverage
Ask for the device’s serial number and enter it in Apple’s coverage lookup. The result can show coverage and benefits. Use it as one check, then confirm that the device delivered is the one described in the listing. A coverage result alone does not establish authenticity, clean ownership, or that the device matches the listing.

Inspect battery and repair information
On a supported iPhone, open Settings > General > About and look for Parts and Service History. Apple says this information may be available on iOS 15.2 or later, depending on the model and whether a part was replaced. An “Unknown” label can mean a part was installed incompletely, is nongenuine or previously used, or is not functioning as expected. Use the label as a reason to ask questions or reassess the purchase, not as a complete diagnosis.
These checks are specific to pre-owned iPhones. The cited guidance does not establish equivalent checks for Mac, iPad, or Apple Watch.

How do new, retailer-refurbished, and Apple Certified Refurbished devices differ?
“Refurbished” is not a universal quality grade. Apple’s claims below apply to products in Apple’s own certified-refurbished program; they do not set a quality standard for third-party refurbishers.

Apple describes its program and warranty on Why Refurbished and its online-store help page. Apple’s live refurbished catalog has advertised savings of “up to 15%” when accessed in 2026; that changeable catalog claim is not a guaranteed discount on every product.

How can I tell whether the sale price is worthwhile?
Compare like with like. Two listings are not equivalent just because both say “iPhone” or show the same discount percentage. Put the important differences side by side:
- Exact model, generation, and storage or configuration
- New, open-box, used, or refurbished condition, including the seller’s grade definition
- Seller identity and the party responsible for returns
- Included accessories and any required service plan
- Return period, exclusions, shipping responsibilities, and restocking terms
- Warranty or coverage, checked against the serial number where possible
- Final checkout cost after tax and shipping
