A falling share price is a reason to investigate Ambuja Cements, not proof that its shares are cheap. Before considering a purchase, establish when and why the price fell, compare the current valuation with earnings on a consistent basis, and check whether the company’s operating and expansion plans are delivering. Company results through Q1 FY27 provide useful fundamentals, but they do not identify the cause of an unspecified price decline or establish whether the shares are attractively valued at your intended entry price.

Start by identifying the price decline

Pin down the dates and size of the fall using a dated exchange or reliable market-data source. Then compare the same period with the broader market and listed cement peers. A sector-wide decline, a broad market sell-off, and company-specific news are different possible explanations; the price chart alone does not establish which one applies.

Check dated exchange disclosures and company announcements around the period for results, guidance, cost pressures, capacity milestones, or corporate-action developments. Do not attribute the move to a particular event unless the timing and disclosures support that explanation. The company disclosures reviewed through 7 October 2026 do not establish the cause of the decline described in the title.

Check valuation at a dated price

A lower share price can still imply an expensive valuation if expected earnings have weakened or the market multiple remains high. At the price you are evaluating, calculate market capitalization and a valuation measure such as price-to-earnings using a clearly identified earnings basis. Compare Ambuja with its own historical valuation and suitable listed cement peers using the same date, reporting periods, and earnings definitions.

  • State the share-price date and whether you use consolidated or standalone earnings.
  • Distinguish reported earnings from management-normalized earnings; disclose the adjustments before comparing multiples or growth rates.
  • Do not treat a price decline as a valuation signal by itself. The company’s disclosures do not supply a current market valuation or a conclusion that the shares are cheap.

Read the latest results against both comparison periods

Ambuja’s 28 July 2026 release covers Q1 FY27, the three months ended 30 June 2026. It reports lower year-over-year volume, revenue, operating EBITDA, profit after tax (PAT), and diluted earnings per share (EPS) than in Q1 FY26. Sequentially, however, the EBITDA margin was higher than in Q4 FY26, and the company reported a reduction in costs per tonne. These movements are worth investigating, but one quarter does not establish a durable trend.

Consolidated measure Q1 FY27 Q1 FY26 Q4 FY26
Sales volume 17.1 million tonnes 18.4 million tonnes 19.9 million tonnes
Revenue from operations ₹9,500 crore ₹10,289 crore ₹10,916 crore
Operating EBITDA ₹1,589 crore ₹1,961 crore ₹1,465 crore
Operating EBITDA margin 16.7% 19.1% 13.4%
PAT ₹660 crore ₹1,041 crore ₹1,857 crore
Diluted EPS ₹2.32 ₹3.53 ₹7.37

All figures in the table are company-reported consolidated figures in Ambuja’s Q1 FY27 release; the comparisons are the company’s stated periods. Quarter-to-quarter comparisons can be affected by seasonality and exceptional items, so examine the relevant notes and full-year figures as well as the headline results. Separate reported profit from normalized profit

Different earnings measures can tell materially different stories. Ambuja’s FY26 integrated report states net profit of ₹5,637 crore, while its FY26 results release gives normalized PAT of ₹2,647 crore after excluding specified prior-year items. These are not interchangeable figures. Before calculating growth, a P/E ratio, or a trend, establish what each measure includes and which adjustments management made.

For a useful earnings-quality check, reconcile revenue, operating EBITDA and margin, PAT, EPS, cash flow, and any one-off items across the relevant filings. Do not combine a normalized earnings figure with reported earnings in a peer comparison without making the basis clear. Look beyond volume to mix, costs, and margins

For Q1 FY27, Ambuja reported a 78% trade share, up 4 percentage points year over year; premium products made up 34% of trade sales. It also reported a sequential cost reduction of ₹206 per tonne, alongside lower total volume year over year. Assess whether a better sales mix and cost control are showing up in realizations and EBITDA per tonne over subsequent reporting periods, rather than assuming that a change in mix has already produced lasting gains.

A secondary summary of the earnings call says management described the move away from low-margin non-trade volume as deliberate. Treat that as management’s interpretation, not independent proof of improved profitability. Track realized prices, trade and premium mix, costs per tonne, fuel and freight expenses, and capacity utilization together. Test expansion plans against completed projects and returns

At 30 June 2026, Ambuja reported capacity of 109 MTPA and a target of 119 MTPA by FY27-end. The Q1 release said Dahej, Salai Banwa, Bathinda, and Jodhpur had commenced trial production; Kalamboli and Warisaliganj were expected to enter trials in Q2, while a Maratha clinker line was expected in 2027. These are a mix of reported milestones and forward-looking expectations, not a guarantee that capacity will be commissioned on schedule or earn an adequate return.

For each project, compare the announced milestone with later company filings, and check commissioning, utilization, capital expenditure, working capital, integration, and returns on new capacity. FY26 reporting said acquired-asset utilization was 54%, up 16 percentage points from 38% in the prior year; this company-reported improvement still needs to be weighed against the cost and returns of integrating the acquired operations. Assess financial resilience without confusing it with value

Ambuja reported a debt-free balance sheet, net worth of ₹71,954 crore, and cash and cash equivalents of ₹844 crore at Q1 FY27 quarter-end. At FY26 year-end, its integrated report gave net worth of ₹71,846 crore and cited CRISIL and CARE AAA/Stable long-term and A1+ short-term ratings. Keep the reporting dates attached to those figures: balance-sheet strength can inform the company’s ability to fund operations and withstand pressure, but it does not determine whether the equity is attractively priced.

Recheck demand and input-cost risks

Company disclosures identified imported fuel, freight and logistics, and other input pressures. The Q1 FY27 release linked fuel and freight pressure partly to geopolitical developments in West Asia and warned that the fuel-inventory cycle could bring peak cost inflation into seasonally weaker Q2. It said the company was responding through fuel mix, renewable energy, logistics efficiency, higher-margin markets, and cost management. Check later results to see whether those measures offset the pressures in actual costs and margins.

The company’s FY27 industry-demand outlook was approximately 5%, and management also described seasonal softness and an early below-normal monsoon forecast. Its FY26 release flagged fuel, diesel, packaging-bag supply constraints, and rupee depreciation as pressures expected to continue into H1 FY27. These were dated company views, not realized outcomes or independent forecasts. Compare them with subsequent demand, costs, and company filings. Track the ACC amalgamation and other corporate actions

Ambuja’s FY26 annual report describes a proposed amalgamation of ACC and Orient Cement with Ambuja as a unified cement platform. ACC’s 24 July 2026 release said the SEBI no-objection certificate for the proposed ACC amalgamation was received on 4 June 2026 and an NCLT application was filed on 29 June 2026; completion was expected during FY27, subject to approvals. Before making a decision, check current exchange filings and scheme documents for regulatory status, terms, share consideration, and record dates. Until approvals and terms are settled, treat the proposed transaction as an execution and uncertainty factor rather than completed earnings or capacity. A practical pre-purchase checklist

  1. Define the decline. Record the exact dates, price source, and size of the fall; compare it with the market and cement peers.
  2. Verify the catalyst. Read dated company and exchange disclosures before linking the share move to results, costs, capacity, or a corporate action.
  3. Update the fundamentals. Use the latest filings, reconcile year-over-year, sequential, and full-year figures, and retain consolidated or standalone scope consistently.
  4. Choose one earnings basis. Separate reported and normalized earnings and state each adjustment before calculating valuation or growth.
  5. Check execution. Follow commissioning, utilization, capex, integration, margins, costs, and returns—not just announced capacity.
  6. Stress-test the thesis. Consider persistent fuel or freight pressure, softer demand, delayed projects or integration, and changes to merger approvals or terms.
  7. Make the valuation comparison dated and consistent. Use a market price and peer data from the same period and an earnings basis that matches across companies.

This checklist is for evaluating the company, not a personalized recommendation to buy or sell its shares.
