Before buying, confirm the phone’s exact model code, China-market software, compatibility with your carrier, local warranty eligibility, and the seller’s return terms. A Vivo phone with the same family name as a locally sold model is not necessarily the same variant or a safe substitute. Whether an import makes sense depends on the specific handset, destination, carrier, and seller.
1. Confirm the exact model and regional variant
Ask the seller for the full model code, RAM and storage configuration, and clear photos of the phone or box identifiers. Do not rely on the product-family name alone: Vivo’s China product comparison lists model-specific specifications, including network bands, software version, built-in applications, and certification details.
Compare the code with Vivo’s official China product specifications and, where available, use the relevant Vivo support portal to check the IMEI or device identity. If the seller will not identify the exact variant, you cannot reliably assess its network support or service eligibility.

Ask whether the phone still runs its original China-market software or has been modified by the seller. China and global software are separate questions; Vivo’s global support FAQ addresses how to identify each version, Google Play on a Chinese version, language support, and flashing an international ROM onto a Chinese phone.

Check current official guidance for the exact model and verify each feature that matters to you, such as Google Play, notifications, language options, Android Auto, wearables, banking or payment apps, and location history. The existence of an FAQ question about installing Google Play or flashing a ROM is not a promise that the procedure works on every model. Do not assume an unofficial ROM change will solve compatibility problems; it may introduce new ones.
3. Compare the phone’s bands with your carrier
Check the complete LTE and 5G band list for the exact model against the carrier you plan to use, including bands used where you live and travel. A “5G” label does not establish that the phone supports the bands, configurations, or services your carrier uses.
Ask the carrier about voice-over-LTE (VoLTE), 5G provisioning, SIM or eSIM requirements, and device certification where relevant. Band overlap by itself does not guarantee service: Vivo’s China specifications say availability also depends on the carrier’s network, infrastructure deployment, and the phone’s software version.

4. Verify warranty and repair access where you will use it
Check the live Vivo warranty terms for your country and exact model, then confirm eligibility with Vivo or a local authorized service center. Ask whether coverage depends on the model or purchase channel, what proof of purchase is required, what repairs are included, and whether parts and international service are available.
For example, Vivo’s India International Warranty Service policy applies only to designated phone models and says service centers may refuse devices bought through unofficial channels. It also excludes inability to use a device caused by regional differences such as different network modes. Vivo states: “International Warranty Service only cover warranty, repair and software upgrade for designated phone models, and does not involve the return and replacement of devices.” These are India policy terms, not a guarantee of service in another country.
5. Get the seller’s promises in writing
A seller’s “international warranty” wording does not establish that Vivo will service the phone locally. Before paying, obtain written answers to these transaction-specific questions:

- Is the phone new, refurbished, previously activated, or seller-modified?
- How long is the return window, and who pays return shipping?
- What is the process for a dead-on-arrival device?
- What warranty does the seller provide, and who handles repairs?
- What payment dispute or buyer-protection route applies if the listing is inaccurate?
Keep the listing, seller responses, invoice, and device identifiers. Return rights and seller obligations depend on the transaction and the laws that apply where you buy.
6. Work out the full landed cost and local requirements
Calculate the purchase price plus shipping, destination customs duties, VAT or GST, and any other applicable import charges. Check whether your destination has radio-device approval, registration, or other import requirements. The amount and rules depend on the destination; there is no single tax or approval answer for all buyers.
7. Compare the import with the local version
Compare the exact imported variant with the locally sold Vivo model before deciding. Use the whole ownership picture, not just the listed price:

Choose the import only if its price advantage still makes sense after these differences are clear. If you cannot confirm the exact model, carrier support, or service terms, the lower listing price may not reflect the phone’s real cost or risk.
