A very cheap electric scooter is worth considering only if its safety, condition, support and legality check out. Before paying, verify certification for the complete scooter—not just its battery or charger—inspect key parts, confirm charger compatibility, and check whether you can get repairs and genuine parts. If you need to ride on public roads, verify the rules where you live first.
Verify safety certification for the exact scooter
Ask the seller for evidence that the complete scooter’s make and model is certified to UL 2272. UL Solutions says UL 2272 covers electrical systems in personal e-mobility devices, including pathway e-scooters: UL Solutions’ UL 2272 overview. A battery or charger certification alone does not establish that the complete scooter is certified.
Certification has a defined scope. UL 2272 does not assess whether a rider can maintain control, so it cannot replace checks of the brakes, steering, tires, fit or riding conditions. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says compliance with relevant UL standards “significantly reduces the risk of injuries and deaths from micromobility device fires.” That statement concerns fire risk; it is not a guarantee about an individual scooter. Inspect the scooter and check for recalls
For a new scooter, look for damage or poor assembly before accepting delivery. For a used or refurbished one, examine it in person if possible and ask about battery history, prior repairs and any crash damage. CPSC advises checking these parts and controls:

- Brakes: Check that they engage and release reliably.
- Handlebars and steering: Look for looseness, damage or unusual movement.
- Throttle and bell: Confirm they work as intended.
- Tires: Check their condition and inflation, and consider whether their size suits the surfaces you will ride. CPSC warns that small scooter tires can stop suddenly on debris or uneven surfaces.
- Lights, cables and frame: Look for missing, damaged or poorly secured parts.
- Battery and charging equipment: Look for damage and confirm the equipment is intended for this model.
Check the maker’s age and weight limits and search for recall notices before buying. CPSC recommends that scooter riders wear a bicycle helmet. Its micromobility safety guidance and recall guidance offer inspection and recall information.
Confirm the charger and battery are compatible
Do not assume a charger is safe because its plug fits. CPSC warns that a universal micromobility charger may connect physically but still be incompatible. Use the charger supplied with the scooter, or a replacement the manufacturer has confirmed is compatible. CPSC recorded 156 reports of fire and thermal incidents involving universal micromobility chargers from January 1, 2023, through May 16, 2024; these reports cover micromobility chargers generally, not only scooters, and are not a failure rate. For charging, follow the manufacturer’s instructions, stay present while the scooter charges, and unplug it when charging is complete. If a used scooter needs a replacement battery or charger, ask whether genuine, manufacturer-authorized parts are available before you buy.

Check seller, warranty and repair support
A low purchase price can become a poor deal if a failed part leaves the scooter unusable. Before paying, get clear answers about who handles warranty claims, where service is available, and whether you can buy genuine replacement parts locally. Terms and support vary by model and market, so do not assume a bargain listing includes useful warranty coverage or repair access.
Be especially cautious with second-hand, refurbished or converted scooters. The UK Department for Transport recommends buying through a reputable retailer and registering the scooter with its maker so the owner can be contacted about a recall. Its guidance also advises using genuine manufacturer-authorized batteries and chargers. Department for Transport guidance, published February 1, 2024
Check whether and where you can ride it
If your intended use depends on public-road access, verify the current rules for the precise place you will ride before buying. They vary by jurisdiction. The UK Department for Transport guidance applies to England, Scotland and Wales: it states that privately owned e-scooters outside official rental trials may be used only on private land with the landowner’s permission. That rule should not be generalized to other countries or to U.S. states and cities; check local requirements where you live.

Compare listings before you decide
Use the same checks for every scooter you are considering. Compare evidence for the exact model, not just the seller’s headline claims.

No single low price or safety label answers every question. If the seller cannot substantiate the model’s safety claims, the scooter has visible faults, compatible charging equipment or repair parts are hard to obtain, or the scooter cannot be used legally for your intended trip, treat the apparent saving with caution.
