Before buying a used Xbox Series X or Series S, verify the exact model and storage, test the console and included controller, and confirm that the seller resets it to the first-time setup screen. If you need discs or UHD Blu-ray playback, check that the specific Series X has a working optical drive: not every Series X configuration includes one, and the Series S is digital-only.
Choose the model that fits how you play
Check for a disc drive, not just the Series X name
Some Series X consoles have an optical drive and some do not. Microsoft’s product guide cautions that a console may or may not include one; Microsoft’s certified-refurbished Series X listing describes a 4K UHD Blu-ray drive for that particular product. The Series S is all-digital, according to Swappa’s used-console inspection guide.
If you want to play physical game discs or watch UHD Blu-rays, inspect the exact console and test its drive before paying. Do not infer drive availability from a listing title or the Series X label alone.
Compare storage and what is included
Check the storage capacity stated in the listing and shown in the console settings. Configurations and available free space can differ, so a seller’s shorthand may not tell you how much room remains for games. Microsoft’s refurbished Series X listing identifies support for a 1TB Series X|S expansion card; treat an expansion card as an optional added cost, not as part of the console unless the seller confirms it is included.

Also compare the controller, power and HDMI cables, proof of purchase, condition, and any applicable return terms. A cheaper console may be a worse deal if you must replace a faulty controller or missing accessory.
Inspect the console before testing it
Ask the seller for the precise model and storage tier, included accessories, purchase date, receipt if available, and repair history. Match the answers to the physical unit. Look over the casing, vents, HDMI and USB ports, power connection, and expansion slot for cracks, corrosion, bent or loose connectors, heavy dirt, or signs of unprofessional opening.

Do not open the console as part of an ordinary buyer inspection. Microsoft’s service and repair guidance concerns work that requires appropriate procedures and tools; visible exterior checks and functional testing are the safer approach for a purchase.

Test the console and accessories
Microsoft’s service guide lists a display, known-working HDMI cable, controller, network access, audio device, and USB connection among the equipment used for functional checks. If possible, bring or use known-working equipment so a faulty cable or display does not obscure the console’s condition.

- Boot and display: Connect the console to a display with a known-working HDMI cable. Confirm a stable image and that it reaches setup or the dashboard without repeated errors or shutdowns. If practical, change display settings and gently move the cable at the connector to spot an intermittent connection; do not force it.
- Launch a game: Start a game and play long enough to check for crashes, freezes, visual dropouts, or unexpected shutdowns. Listen for grinding, rattling, or unusually loud fan behavior. There is no established universal test duration or noise threshold, so consider any concerning behavior in context rather than treating a particular sound or short test as a definitive diagnosis.
- Check network and audio: Connect through Wi-Fi or Ethernet and confirm the console can reach online setup or services. Test the audio output you expect to use.
- Test the controller: Pair it, check both sticks for drift, and test the face buttons, bumpers, triggers, D-pad, and vibration. A controller that pairs but has a drifting stick or unresponsive button is not fully working.
- Try the ports you need: Use a known-working device to check the USB ports or other connections you plan to use. You do not need to test every port if you will not use it, but note any fault before agreeing on a price.
Test the optical drive only on a drive-equipped Series X
Insert a known-working game disc and confirm the console recognizes it and can launch or install the game. Check that the disc ejects normally and listen for abnormal mechanical sounds. A Series S has no disc drive to test; on a Series X, first establish whether the exact unit has one.
Complete the account handoff before paying
Ask the seller to remove their account and choose the reset option that removes everything. Confirm that the console reaches its initial setup flow. If the seller and internet connection allow, begin setup with your own account before completing payment.

Do not count the seller’s installed games, digital library, or subscriptions as part of the hardware purchase. These are associated with the seller’s account or purchase history and are not a reliable transfer of ownership. A factory reset also does not, by itself, establish that a console has no enforcement restriction. Test online access before purchase where possible; if status remains uncertain, contact Xbox Support with the console details.

Reduce risk when buying remotely
Request a recent, continuous video showing the console booting, the model and serial label, a game launching, controller operation, and the disc drive working if the unit has one. Video can help identify obvious problems, but it cannot prove the console will arrive intact or rule out every intermittent fault.

- Prefer a retailer or marketplace with written return and buyer-protection terms.
- Before sending money, check the exact return deadline, exclusions, and eligible payment methods. Terms vary by platform and jurisdiction.
- Ask for the original receipt and serial number. Use Microsoft’s support process for the relevant region to check service eligibility; do not assume a warranty remains active or transfers to you.
- Keep the listing, seller messages, payment record, and any test video in case you need to document what was promised.
