Before paying for a used Lenovo Legion Go S, verify the exact configuration and installed operating system, then test the screen, controls, ports, wireless connections, charging, and battery behavior in person. Also check the serial number’s warranty status and try your own important games on the unit’s OS. Legion Go S configurations differ, so a listing or family-level specification sheet alone does not confirm what the seller has.

Confirm the exact model and configuration

Ask the seller to show the device’s system information rather than relying on the listing. Record its model or machine type (MTM), processor, installed memory, SSD capacity, and operating system, then compare those details with Lenovo’s Legion Go S 8APU1 specifications. That reference lists Ryzen Z1 Extreme options, Windows 11 and SteamOS options, soldered 16GB or 32GB memory, M.2 storage, and a microSD card reader. It describes the product family, not the specific unit for sale.

Lenovo describes the Legion Go S as an 8-inch device with a PureSight display and TrueStrike controllers. Use the actual device to check its screen and controls; do not assume every feature or configuration in product materials applies to the particular listing. See Lenovo’s Legion Go S product page.

Inspect the screen and exterior

  • Look over the display glass, bezel, shell, grips, seams, buttons, kickstand, and USB-C openings for cracks, dents, looseness, scratches, or signs of impact or liquid exposure.
  • Show a bright plain screen and a dark one. Check for dead or stuck pixels, uneven illumination, scratches, and image artifacts.
  • Test touchscreen response across the display and adjust brightness through several levels.
  • Ask about drops, liquid exposure, and repairs. Treat the answers as seller claims, not proof; check what you can on the device.

Test controls, audio, ports, and wireless connections

Controls and sound

  • Move both sticks through their full range and release them to center. Check for drift in an input-calibration view or a game.
  • Test the D-pad, face buttons, bumpers, triggers, trigger locks, trackpad, menu buttons, and vibration.
  • Listen to the speakers at low and high volume. Test the microphone if you need it, and headphone output if available.
  • Try controls both in the operating system and in a game. A working menu button does not demonstrate that every input works.

Ports and connectivity

  • Test each USB-C port with charging and, if available, a data-capable accessory. Check for looseness or intermittent connections.
  • Insert a known-good microSD card and confirm that the device recognizes it. Lenovo lists a card reader for the family in its specifications.
  • Connect to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and check that each connection remains stable during a short test.

Check startup, charging, and battery behavior

  1. Ask the seller to shut the device down completely, then start it. Confirm that it reaches the expected operating system without an unexplained error, lock, or setup barrier.
  2. Connect the included charger or a known-good compatible adapter. Confirm that charging starts and does not cut out when the connector is gently moved.
  3. Run a game or other sustained workload briefly. Watch for unexpected shutdowns, severe stuttering, unusually loud fan noise, or heat warnings. A short session cannot establish long-term reliability.
  4. Check the battery report and observe its drain during the visit. Treat this as a limited spot check, not a definitive capacity measurement: the cited sources do not establish a universal pass/fail battery-health threshold for used units.

Check the operating system, storage, and games you use

Confirm whether the device runs Windows or SteamOS; Lenovo lists both as options for the family. Ask the seller to show that updates work, controls are recognized, and the device sleeps and wakes. Make sure the relevant account can be signed out or the device reset appropriately before ownership changes. Lenovo’s user guide covers device setup and operating-system guidance, including Windows BIOS-update access through Legion Space. Lenovo also provides SteamOS update and recovery information.

Before buying, try the games and launchers you care about on the installed OS, especially titles that depend on anti-cheat software or non-Steam launchers. The cited sources do not provide a comprehensive, current compatibility list, so check your specific games rather than assuming they will work.

Verify the SSD capacity and available space on the device. Lenovo specifies soldered memory, so do not buy on the assumption that RAM can be upgraded. The family specifications list M.2 storage and a microSD reader; a card can add storage, but it is not a substitute for a correctly described, working internal drive.

Verify warranty status and make the transaction testable

Ask for the serial number and original purchase record. Check the unit’s warranty dates and regional service options on Lenovo Support, and confirm directly whether any remaining coverage or service plan applies to this device. A product-family support page does not establish that an individual used unit is covered, and you should not assume that coverage transfers or that an extended plan is available.

Compare two listings by the same criteria

If you are choosing between units, compare configuration and condition rather than relying on a headline model name. Check the actual processor and OS, installed RAM and SSD capacity, physical and control condition, battery behavior, warranty status, included charger or case, seller recourse, and final price. Tom’s Guide’s June 27, 2025 review tested a Z1 Extreme SteamOS configuration and reported an 8-inch 1920 × 1200, 120Hz display; those are observations about that review unit, not a guarantee about every used listing. Consider useful included accessories

  • microSD card: The Legion Go S family specifications list a card reader, making a compatible card an optional way to add storage. Choose capacity and speed for your intended use.
  • Carrying case: A fitted case can be useful for a portable device, particularly if the seller does not include one. Check that it fits the exact Legion Go S; no specific third-party case is established here as certified for it.
