Before you buy a smartphone on sale, confirm the exact model and condition, calculate the full delivered price, verify who is selling it, and read the return and warranty terms. Then check that the specific phone variant will work with your carrier and keep a record of the listing and checkout. A low advertised price is not a good deal if it is for a different configuration, comes with weak protections, or cannot connect to your network.
1. Confirm the exact phone and condition
Start with the product details, not the discount badge. Write down the manufacturer, full model number, storage capacity, color if it matters, and regional variant. Also confirm whether the phone is listed as new, refurbished, open-box, or used. These categories can have different prices, warranties, and return terms.
Compare the same configuration and condition across trustworthy sellers. A lower price for a model with less storage, a different regional variant, or a refurbished unit is not an apples-to-apples comparison. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends noting the manufacturer or model number and product details when comparison shopping: FTC online shopping guidance.

2. Work out whether the sale is a real deal
Compare the total you will pay, not just the headline price. Add delivery, shipping, handling, taxes, and any other fees shown at checkout. Check whether the advertised price depends on a bundle, subscription, trade-in, activation, or other condition. If the seller offers a price match or adjustment after purchase, read its terms and deadlines rather than assuming the offer applies automatically.

Use a short comparison checklist for each offer:
- Same model number, storage, regional variant, and condition.
- Total delivered cost, including applicable taxes and fees.
- Seller identity and the marketplace’s dispute or refund protections.
- Return window, shipping responsibility, and any restocking fee.
- Warranty coverage and access to service in your country.
- Carrier and network compatibility; for used phones, condition and ownership-lock status.
Prioritize the features you actually need rather than paying extra for specifications you will not use. Save the listing and the final checkout total so you can compare the offer accurately or refer to it if there is a dispute.
3. Verify the seller and payment protections
Find out who is actually selling the phone. On a marketplace, the platform may host a listing while a separate business or individual takes the order, ships the device, and handles returns. Check the seller’s name and contact details, recent reviews from more than one source, and the marketplace’s refund and dispute rules. Confirm those rules apply to this particular item and seller.
Do not treat a high star rating as proof that a listing is trustworthy. The FTC warns that online reviews can be fake or misleading; use them as one signal alongside seller details, listing quality, and the platform’s protections: FTC online shopping guidance. Keep payment and communication within the marketplace where possible, and choose a payment method that may offer recourse. Avoid a seller who insists on payment by gift card, cryptocurrency, or wire transfer. The FTC explains common online-shopping scams and safer practices here: FTC advice on online shopping.

4. Read the sale-specific return terms
Before paying, locate the return policy for the exact listing. Check the return deadline, which reasons are accepted, who pays return shipping, whether there is a restocking fee, and whether sale, clearance, open-box, or refurbished goods have different terms. Keep a copy of the policy and note the deadline from the date that applies under its wording, such as delivery or purchase.
Return rights depend on where you buy and the details of the transaction. For example, the European Commission describes a 14-day withdrawal period for many online purchases by consumers from traders in the EU; exceptions and conditions apply, and this is not a universal rule: Your Europe: guarantees and returns. Check the rules that apply in your own location, as well as the seller’s policy. Keep messages about promised returns or exceptions in writing.
5. Check the warranty and who will honor it
Read the warranty terms for the exact device and seller. Confirm what it covers, how long it applies, whether the manufacturer will provide service in your country, and whether you must deal with the seller instead. A phone imported from another market may not receive the same local service as a locally sold variant.

Also distinguish a manufacturer warranty from legal consumer rights. The available rights and remedies depend on your location and whether the seller is a business or a private individual. As a regional example, New South Wales guidance says overseas businesses or private sellers can leave Australian buyers with limited protection under Australian Consumer Law: NSW guidance on online shopping. Do not assume another country’s warranty or statutory rules apply to your purchase.

6. Check carrier, network, and regulatory compatibility
Use the full model number and regional variant to check compatibility with your carrier. Confirm the phone supports the bands and network technologies used where you live, and check local coverage for the places you use it. Ask whether the device is carrier-locked or subject to an activation, contract, or payment restriction. An unlocked label alone does not prove that a phone supports your carrier’s network.
For an imported phone, check the relevant country’s device standards and regulatory certification. Requirements differ by market. In Australia, the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) warns that some cheap phones sold online, especially from overseas, may not meet Australian standards or work on local networks. It advises: “Check with the seller or manufacturer that the phone has an RCM before buying.” The RCM is the Australian Regulatory Compliance Mark: ACMA guidance on phones bought online or overseas.

In Brazil, Anatel advises buyers to check certification, IMEI status, and compatibility with local networks; phones bought abroad may also have restrictions tied to their original carrier. These are Brazil-specific checks, not a guarantee that a device will work in another market: Anatel’s Celular Legal guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. For a used or refurbished phone, check condition and access locks
Ask for clear photos of the actual device and a precise description of scratches, screen damage, repairs, and included accessories. For an iPhone, Apple’s UK guidance recommends checking physical condition, battery health, parts and service history, and how the seller inspected the phone. These steps are specific to pre-owned iPhones; for another brand, check the manufacturer’s own guidance.
Make sure the device is not locked to its previous owner. Apple says not to buy an iPhone with Activation Lock enabled and advises returning an online purchase that arrives locked. Its UK guidance states: “If you see iPhone Locked to Owner when you turn on or wake the iPhone and you’re with the seller, ask them to enter their password to turn off Activation Lock.” If buying online, do not accept a seller’s assurance in place of verifying that the phone can be set up with your own account: Apple Support: pre-owned iPhone guidance.

Brazil-specific IMEI checks
For a phone purchase in Brazil, Anatel recommends checking that the IMEI shown by the phone matches the one on its box and checking whether the identifier is restricted because of theft, loss, or another irregularity. A dual-SIM phone can have more than one IMEI, so check each relevant identifier. Anatel also recommends checking certification. This is advice for Brazil and does not mean every country has the same IMEI lookup or protections: Anatel’s Celular Legal guidance.
8. Check the phone’s software-update support
Security updates matter because they can fix vulnerabilities and help protect a phone against threats. NSW consumer guidance lists security patches among the benefits of operating-system updates, and ACMA says updates help protect against security threats: NSW online-shopping guidance and ACMA guidance on phones bought online or overseas. Since update commitments vary by model and market, check the manufacturer’s current support policy for the exact phone before buying.
9. Save evidence of the offer and your purchase
Keep records that show what was promised and what you paid. Save the seller name and listing URL, screenshots or a copy of the product description, the final checkout total, the promised shipping date, the return terms, and relevant messages. The FTC recommends keeping order and seller records when shopping online: FTC online shopping guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesShipping promises matter too. In the United States, the FTC’s shipping rule generally requires a seller to ship within 30 days after receiving the order information or permission to charge if the seller has not stated a shipping time. That is a U.S. rule with stated conditions, not a worldwide delivery guarantee: FTC guide to the Mail, Internet, or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule.
