Before buying a refurbished or open-box Galaxy S25 Ultra, confirm the exact model and storage, carrier and account status, battery promise, condition grade, and written return and warranty terms. After it arrives, use Samsung Members diagnostics and your own hands-on checks while you can still return it. “Open-box” and “refurbished” are seller descriptions—not universal standards for battery health, repairs, or water resistance.
Compare the full offer before you pay
Assess the protections and the device together, not just the asking price. Put competing listings side by side and compare:
- Total price and storage capacity.
- Exact model and region, plus confirmed compatibility with your carrier.
- Cosmetic grade and any disclosed repairs.
- Battery condition, replacement status, or written battery guarantee.
- Return window, defect-reporting deadline, and who pays return shipping.
- Warranty length, exclusions, repair provider, inspection fees, and any restocking fee.
- Included S Pen, cable, box, and other accessories.
- Seller identity and the purchase documentation you will receive.
A cheaper listing may offer less time to report defects or no battery commitment. Compare the terms before treating two prices as equivalent.

Save a copy or screenshot of the listing, condition grade, seller identity, included items, warranty, and return policy. Ask the seller to confirm the exact model, storage, carrier compatibility, and whether the phone has any account, financing, or activation lock. Ask whether the battery is original, tested, or replaced. If the seller advertises a capacity threshold, request the specific threshold and the remedy if the phone falls short.

Do not assume “open-box” means the battery is unused. Likewise, “refurbished” alone does not establish who repaired the phone, which parts were used, or what warranty applies.
Understand what Samsung Certified Re-Newed does—and does not—promise
Samsung’s US Certified Re-Newed program is a specific manufacturer program, not a definition that applies to every refurbished Galaxy. Samsung says its US phones use genuine parts, receive a certified new battery, pass a 147-point quality test, come unlocked, and include a one-year limited warranty and a 15-day return window. Samsung announced on January 13, 2026, that S25-series Certified Re-Newed phones, including the S25 Ultra, were available in Germany and the UK, and under the “Refurbished Premium by Samsung” label in France. Samsung says the European-market program uses genuine parts, new IMEIs, and more than 100 quality tests; warranty terms may vary by market. Check the device identity and condition on arrival
Match the phone to the listing
Compare the model and IMEI information on the phone with the listing, receipt, and box where available. If they do not match, pause and resolve the discrepancy with the seller before keeping the device. Confirm that the seller has removed their accounts and that you can add your own and reset and activate the phone normally. If activation or reset is blocked, use the seller’s return process.

Inspect the exterior and screen
- Look for cracks, scratches, dead pixels, discoloration, and areas where touch does not respond.
- Check the frame, rear glass, camera covers, and USB-C port for dents or damage.
- Compare what you see with the written cosmetic grade; grades and their meanings vary by seller.
Run diagnostics and test the features you will use
Open Samsung Members and run Phone diagnostics, or use Device care diagnostics if available. Samsung lists checks such as battery status, camera, touch screen, S Pen hovering and touching, speaker, microphone, buttons, fingerprint, sensors, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, mobile network, NFC, USB connection, and cable and wireless charging. Diagnostics are a useful screen, not a substitute for trying the phone in ordinary use. Test calls, cellular data, and Wi-Fi; record and play audio; try the front and rear cameras; press the buttons; use the S Pen; and charge by cable and wirelessly if available. Enroll or test fingerprint recognition. Keep a record of any failed test and contact the seller within the applicable deadline.

Check software support and install updates
Check the software version in Settings and install any available official update while the return period is still open. Samsung’s launch specification sheet lists Android 15 and One UI 7.0 for the Galaxy S25 Ultra. Samsung says the S25 Ultra receives seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates from global launch. Update availability can vary by region and carrier, so verify that the phone accepts official updates for its configuration. Do not treat a used phone as water-resistant without proof
Samsung lists IP68 water and dust resistance as a Galaxy S25 Ultra specification. That describes the model’s design; it does not show that a particular used phone’s seals remain intact after wear or repair. Do not submerge or splash-test the phone. If water resistance matters, ask whether the unit has been opened or repaired and request documentation for that device from the seller or an authorized service provider. Know the return and warranty terms before the clock starts
Return deadlines and warranty coverage depend on the seller and country. Samsung US says most direct mobile-device purchases can be returned within 15 days of delivery; defects or damage must be reported within five days, and Galaxy S-series phones have no restocking fee. Samsung says purchases from other retailers follow those retailers’ policies. Check the current terms for your order rather than applying Samsung’s direct-sale policy to a marketplace or other store. Before paying, establish in writing the return deadline, defect-reporting deadline, return shipping responsibility, warranty provider, covered repairs, exclusions, inspection fees, and any restocking fee. Keep the packaging, included accessories, and seller correspondence until you decide to keep the phone. Samsung’s direct US returns require the original included items and a factory reset; another seller may set different requirements.
