Before buying, confirm the exact phone variant, how much software support remains, who inspected or repaired it, its battery and device status, and the seller’s warranty and return terms. Then compare the delivered price against phones with the same storage, condition, support life, and protections. “Refurbished” and cosmetic grades are seller descriptions, not a single universal testing standard.
1. Identify the exact phone and what the listing includes
Start with the model number or regional variant, not just the family name. Phones that share a name can differ in supported networks, so ask the carrier you plan to use to confirm compatibility for the exact variant. CTIA recommends checking compatibility for the specific model: CTIA device-upgrade guidance.
- Write down the full model or variant and storage capacity.
- Note the seller’s condition grade and read how that seller defines it.
- Check what is included, such as a charger or cable, rather than assuming accessories are supplied.
- Record the seller and the total delivered price, including shipping and any stated fees.
CTIA’s grading criteria version 5.1, published June 10, 2026, offers guidance for translating wholesale grades into consumer-facing terms; it does not replace the individual seller’s grade definition. Ask what the specific grade means for scratches, dents, screen condition, and function: CTIA grading criteria announcement.

2. Find out who refurbished it and what was done
Ask who inspected the phone, which functions were tested, whether it was opened or repaired, what parts were replaced, and whether the battery was tested or replaced. Sellers can use the same label for different processes, so do not infer a repair or battery standard from the word “refurbished.”

Manufacturer-certified programs can make more specific promises, but those promises apply to that program—not to refurbished phones generally:
- Google Certified Refurbished Pixel (US): Google says its phones receive multi-point quality testing and battery evaluation; genuine Google parts are used if a part needs replacement. Google also says the phones arrive unlocked and receive the applicable latest software. Check the current model availability and terms on Google’s Certified Refurbished Pixel page.
- Samsung Certified Re-Newed (US): Samsung describes expert inspection, genuine Samsung parts including a certified new battery, a 147-point quality test, and a one-year warranty. Those are Samsung’s program commitments, not a market-wide refurbishment standard. Verify regional and model availability on Samsung’s Certified Re-Newed page.
Google’s US Certified Refurbished page advertises savings of up to 45% versus original retail price. That is a Google claim that can vary with model and price changes; it is not an estimate of typical refurbished-phone savings.
3. Check how much software support is left
Look up the manufacturer’s support information for the exact model and find when its updates end. A low purchase price can be poor value if the phone has little update life remaining.

Google says Pixel 8 and later receive updates for seven years starting when each phone first became available on the Google Store in the US. Buying a used device does not restart that clock. Confirm the exact model and applicable regional terms on Google’s Pixel update policy page.
Do not assume that a refurbished device automatically has the same remaining support as a newly released phone. The relevant date is the manufacturer’s support schedule for that model, not the date you buy it.
4. Confirm network compatibility and device status
Ask your intended carrier to verify that the exact model variant can be used on its network. Also request the device’s IMEI and check its status before paying, where possible. In the US, CTIA points consumers to its Stolen Phone Checker and recommends checking through a provider: CTIA’s Stolen Phone Checker guidance.

- Display: 6.2" AMOLED display with 120Hz refresh rate and 1300 nits brightness for vivid visuals and smooth scrolling.
- Camera: Rear dual camera system with 64MP main and 12MP ultrawide lenses for stunning photos and videos.
- Memory: 128GB internal storage and 8GB RAM for plenty of apps and files.
- Connectivity: 5G capable with support for GSM, CDMA, and Wi-Fi networks.
- Battery: 4000mAh battery provides all-day power for your daily needs.
A clean IMEI result is useful, but it does not prove that every account, activation, or network condition is satisfied. Keep the ability to return the phone if the carrier cannot activate it as expected.
5. Inspect condition and basic functions
If you can inspect the phone before purchase, test it. If you cannot, make sure the return window is long enough to do so after delivery. Check the following:
- Screen and body for cracks, dents, deep scratches, or other damage.
- Charging and, if present, the headphone jack.
- Buttons and controls, touch responsiveness, speakers, and microphones.
- Cameras and connectivity features you expect to use.
- Moisture indicators where they can be checked.
These checks align with CTIA’s consumer inspection guidance, which also calls out physical damage, charging, and responsiveness: CTIA device inspection guidance. A cosmetic grade alone does not establish battery condition or prove that every component works.

- Fluid 120Hz Display: Features a large 6.7-inch HD+ display with a 120Hz refresh rate and Corning Gorilla Glass 3 for smooth scrolling and added durability.
6. Read warranty and return terms before checkout
Check the written policy for the exact listing. Find out who honors the warranty, how long coverage lasts, what it excludes, how many days you have to return the phone, who pays return shipping, and whether a restocking fee applies. Do not assume every refurbished device has a warranty or a particular return period.
US Federal Trade Commission guidance notes that “refurbished” can describe an item that is less than perfect and advises buyers to check return terms for sale items: FTC guidance on buying used products. Warranty rules depend on the transaction and applicable law; the FTC explains relevant warranty considerations here: FTC guide to federal warranty law. Protections and rights vary by location.

7. Compare the real value, not the discount label
Compare phones on the same basis: model and storage, condition, battery disclosure, remaining software support, network compatibility, seller protections, and delivered price. A larger advertised discount is not necessarily the better choice if the phone cannot be activated, has limited update life, or comes with weaker return terms.

Manufacturer programs illustrate why seller-specific promises matter. Google’s US Certified Refurbished Pixel page describes a one-year limited warranty and free returns; Samsung’s US Certified Re-Newed page describes a one-year warranty. These are program-specific statements, so check current terms, availability, and the particular phone before purchase rather than treating them as standard coverage for other sellers.
Quick pre-purchase checklist
- Match the exact model variant and storage to your needs.
- Read the seller’s grade definition and itemize what is included.
- Ask what was tested, repaired, or replaced, including the battery.
- Check the model’s update end date with the manufacturer.
- Confirm carrier compatibility and check the IMEI where available.
- Plan an inspection during the return period.
- Read warranty, return, shipping, and fee terms.
- Compare the delivered price with equivalent phones and protections.
For an additional baseline, Google says Play Protect-certified devices undergo security and compatibility tests and include authentic Google apps. Play Protect certification does not certify a refurbished phone’s cosmetic condition, battery health, or seller warranty: Google Play Protect certification information.
