Before you pay, verify the exact phone and seller, confirm it will work with your carrier, calculate the full delivered cost, and read the return and warranty terms. For a used or refurbished device, also check its status and condition. A low listed price is not a good deal if the phone is incompatible, the seller is difficult to reach, or returning it costs more than expected.
Use this checklist before you order
- Identify the exact phone. Match the make, model, storage capacity, condition, and regional or carrier variant to the device you intend to buy. Save a copy of the listing so you have a record of what was promised.
- Check seller and marketplace protections. Look for recent seller reviews from more than one source, usable contact details, and a clear listing with relevant photos. Confirm who handles problems and whether the marketplace’s current buyer protection covers this seller and item. Ask questions in writing and keep the replies. The FTC’s marketplace guidance recommends checking refund and return rules, support for problems, and payment safety before buying.
- Work out the total cost. Add the phone price, shipping, handling, delivery charges, taxes, and any other fees. Read the conditions attached to the discount, including any sale or clearance rules that affect returns. The FTC’s online shopping guidance explains that shipping costs, delivery promises, and return policies matter when shopping online.
- Read delivery and return terms before checkout. Find the promised delivery date or timeframe, return deadline, return-shipping responsibility, restocking fees, and refund method. In the United States, FTC guidance says sellers must ship within the time they promise; if they promise no shipping time, the FTC describes a 30-day default. This is U.S. guidance, not a worldwide rule.
- Choose a payment method with recourse. Prefer a credit card or a secure payment system with buyer protection. Do not pay outside the marketplace or use a gift card, cryptocurrency, or wire transfer because a seller pressures you to do so.
- Check the written warranty and software support. Read the warranty, identify who handles repairs, and save the terms with your receipt. Ask the manufacturer for the security-update commitment and end date for the exact model; support varies by model, so do not assume an inexpensive phone is still receiving updates.
Will the phone work with your carrier?
“Unlocked” does not mean “compatible with every network.” Wireless providers use different network technologies and spectrum, and a device may work poorly or not at all on a network it was not designed for. Check the exact model or variant with your carrier before purchase. CTIA’s device guidance also recommends confirming compatibility.
Do not rely only on a broad model name in the listing: regional and carrier variants can differ. Give the carrier the precise model identifier shown by the seller or manufacturer and ask whether it supports the network and service you need.

What to check on a used or refurbished phone
Verify device status
Ask the seller for the IMEI or another device identifier, then check it with the wireless provider or CTIA’s Stolen Phone Checker program. A clean result can indicate that the device has not been reported as lost or stolen in the checker’s records; it does not establish the phone’s full condition or guarantee that it will work with your carrier.

Inspect condition and the seller’s grading terms
Ask what “good,” “excellent,” “refurbished,” or “certified pre-owned” means in that seller’s listing. Check for cracks, dents, moisture indicators, charging problems, unresponsive controls, and other functions relevant to the phone. CTIA announced Version 5.1 of its Wireless Device Grading Scales Criteria and Definitions on June 10, 2026, covering consumer-facing condition guidance such as cosmetic criteria, functional testing, battery health, and genuine-parts declarations. That does not mean every seller follows the standard, so read the seller’s own grading definitions.
Confirm the remedy if it is not as described
Before ordering, confirm the return window, refund terms, warranty, and who pays return shipping. CTIA advises buyers to verify a secondhand device’s status, condition, purchasing and refund policies, and compatibility; these are separate checks, not substitutes for one another.

Compare two phone deals on the same terms
Use the same checklist for each offer rather than comparing headline discounts alone.

Keep the records you may need later
Save the receipt, listing and product description, written warranty, seller messages, and any confirmation of compatibility or return terms. If a problem arises, these records help show what was offered and what the seller agreed to provide.
