Before you buy an iPhone, verify the exact model works with your carrier, find out whether it is locked, check what warranty and return terms apply, and treat any trade-in estimate as conditional until the device is inspected. These details depend on the model, country, seller, carrier, and purchase terms, so confirm them for the specific offer rather than relying on a general claim that iPhones are compatible.
Will the iPhone work with your carrier?
Check compatibility for the exact iPhone model and market version you plan to buy. Ask your carrier to confirm that it supports the device on your plan; Apple’s carrier guidance poses the same practical question but does not certify every model, plan, and carrier combination.

Confirm whether it is unlocked
Ask the seller or carrier whether the phone is unlocked and what conditions apply if it is being financed. Apple’s U.S. shopping guidance says iPhones financed through AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon installment plans are locked to that carrier until paid in full. A financing offer can therefore limit your ability to switch carriers before payoff.

Ask whether your carrier supports the exact device and your plan, and whether activation requires a physical SIM, eSIM, or both. Apple advises buyers to confirm eSIM support with their carrier; the carrier is the source for whether your particular plan and device can be activated.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
What warranty and AppleCare coverage apply?
For a used phone or a seller’s coverage claim, request the serial number and check it through Apple’s coverage lookup. Review the benefits shown for that device rather than relying on an advertisement.
Apple says most Apple hardware includes a one-year limited warranty and up to 90 days of complimentary technical support. Apple Certified Refurbished products are described as including Apple’s standard one-year limited warranty. These are Apple program statements; they do not establish every retailer’s warranty or the full extent of your local legal rights. Read the written terms that apply to the specific sale.
Rank #2
- Fully unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US-Cellular, Cricket, Metro, etc.).

- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a charging cable that may be generic.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Check AppleCare eligibility separately
Coverage lookup and AppleCare eligibility are different checks. Apple may require a device check before offering AppleCare, and available options vary by country or region and device. An offer or listing that mentions AppleCare is not proof that the particular iPhone can be enrolled.
How can you compare trade-in offers?
Do not treat an estimated trade-in credit as guaranteed. Under Apple’s U.S. Trade In terms, the estimate may be revised after inspection if the device’s condition differs from its description, Find My has not been removed, or the device arrives outside the specified period. Those terms also describe a 14-day arrival condition counted from delivery of the trade-in box for the possibility of a revised quote; this is an Apple U.S. program rule, not a universal trade-in deadline.
Rank #3
- Vibrant 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display with OLED technology. Action mode for smooth, steady, handheld videos.
Compare the net amount you would pay after applying a realistic trade-in value, and check what happens if inspection changes the quote. Apple’s U.S. terms state: “You are responsible for backing up and/or deleting data on your trade-in device.” Back up anything you need, then remove personal data and follow the program’s instructions before handing the phone over.
What return and service-cancellation rules should you read?
Check the return policy for the seller you are buying from, along with any carrier agreement. Apple’s U.S. Store help says an eligible purchase made directly from Apple can be returned within 14 days of receipt if the product is in original condition with its included parts, accessories, and packaging. Purchases from other retailers follow those retailers’ policies. Apple also says returning the iPhone does not automatically cancel a wireless service agreement, so contact the carrier about cancellation obligations.
Rank #4
- This pre-owned product is not Apple certified, but has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon-qualified suppliers.
- There will be no visible cosmetic imperfections when held at an arm’s length.
- This product is eligible for a replacement or refund within 90 days of receipt if you are not satisfied.
- Product may come in generic Box.
What should you inspect on a used or refurbished iPhone?
For an available iPhone running iOS 15.2 or later, open Settings > General > About > Parts and Service History. Apple says the screen can identify genuine, unknown, or unverified parts, and notes that an unknown part might affect trade-in value. This is one indicator, not a full physical or functional inspection.
Separately confirm the seller’s return window and warranty, whether the phone is activation-ready, and its battery and overall condition. Do not assume that a clean parts-history screen proves the rest of the device is in good working order.

Compare the whole offer, not just the advertised price
When weighing two or more offers, compare the terms that can change the phone’s usability or final cost:
- Total cost: include financing terms or fees and subtract a realistic, conditional trade-in value.
- Lock status: confirm whether the phone is unlocked and whether payoff is required to unlock it.
- Compatibility: verify the exact model with your carrier, including SIM or eSIM activation for your plan.
- Coverage: check the device’s displayed coverage and whether it is eligible for AppleCare in your location.
- Trade-in terms: understand inspection, revised-value, timing, and data-removal requirements.
- Returns and service: read the seller’s return terms and the carrier’s separate cancellation rules.
There is no universally best offer established by these terms: the right choice depends on your country, carrier, exact model, seller, and how long you expect to keep the phone.
