Before bidding, verify what the lot actually claims, whether its evidence connects this specific jersey to game use, and what the auction’s written terms allow if that claim is disputed. “Game-issued” does not necessarily mean “game-worn,” and a certificate, correct tags, or a plausible appearance alone may not establish that a jersey was worn in the stated game.
Start with the exact claim in the listing
Write down the catalogue’s precise wording: game-worn, game-used, game-issued, team-issued, player-worn, warm-up worn, or event-worn. These terms are not interchangeable. Ask the auction house what the label means for this particular lot and whether it asserts use in competition.
Game-issued is not the same as game-worn
A jersey can be prepared, customized, or made available for a player without evidence that the player wore it in a game. Correct size, tags, patches, and customization may be consistent with a player or season, but do not by themselves prove game use. A specialist discussion of photomatching and authentication explains these distinctions: read the specialist overview.

Check official identifiers against the issuing authority
For an MLB item, inspect the hologram on the jersey and search its unique prefix and serial number in MLB’s authentication database and program information. MLB says eligible items are authenticated when a designated authenticator witnesses them being signed or used; the identifier can then be checked against the database. MLB reports more than six million program items authenticated as of the page accessed in 2026; that cumulative figure covers all program items, not jerseys alone.

Read the record rather than treating the presence of a hologram as a complete answer. MLB distinguishes its authentication program from other licensing identifiers, and a “Team Issued” designation is not intended to establish that an item was used. Confirm that the record describes the item and status claimed in the lot.
For another sport or league, look for that league’s or team’s official lookup or documentation process, if available. MLB’s database does not apply across sports, and there is no single cross-sport lookup established here.
Ask how this specific jersey reached the auction
Request the provenance chain: how the jersey left the team, league, player, or prior owner, and what records support each transfer. Ask whether the lot includes team or league records, original purchase or transfer documentation, an authenticator’s report, or other contemporaneous evidence. Compare dates, player, team, event, patches, and season details across the listing and documents.

A certificate is one piece of evidence. Check what object it identifies, what conclusion it makes, and what the issuer’s stated process covers. An opinion about authenticity or period consistency should not be presented as proof of game use unless its scope supports that conclusion.
Examine the photomatch and its evidence
Photomatching compares identifiable features on the physical jersey with photographs or video of an athlete wearing it. Ask to see the reference image, the corresponding area of the jersey, and the explanation for the match. Potentially useful details include a particular loose thread, stitching irregularity, fold, deformation, mesh pattern, lettering puckering, stain, repair, wear mark, or distinctive patch or number alignment.
The strength of a match depends on how many identifying characteristics can be seen and how clearly they appear in both the item and the reference material. Camera angle, lighting, motion, obstruction, and image resolution can make a comparison inconclusive; generic visual similarity is not enough. Authentication and photomatching are related but distinct: authentication may consider construction, tags, materials, customization, provenance, and period consistency, while photomatching seeks to connect this particular object to photographic evidence. See the specialist explanation of photomatching.

Check the lot’s own documentation even when it is part of a named program. Sotheby’s says jerseys in its NBA Game Worn Program are photomatched unless otherwise stipulated. Confirm whether that exception applies to the specific lot and what supporting record is supplied. The NBA Auctions program page, accessed October 4, 2026, says the partnership will offer game-worn jerseys during the 2026–27 season and that NBA Auctions is expected to resume in the first week of that season; schedules and inventory may change.

Compare condition and construction with the claim
Compare the item and every available catalogue photo with the description. Note alterations, repairs, replaced patches or numbers, laundering, stains, damage, and areas that are not pictured. Ask whether claimed wear is documented as game wear or merely describes the jersey’s observed condition. Neither a clean appearance nor visible wear alone establishes whether it was used in a game.
If photos or inspection access leave questions, request more images and written answers before the bidding deadline. Keep the listing and the auction house’s replies so you can compare them with the item and sale terms later.

Read the sale terms and calculate your full commitment
Before bidding, check the buyer’s premium and other fees, taxes, shipping, payment deadline, inspection opportunities, and the exact process for an authenticity or provenance challenge. Find out what evidence is required, when written notice must arrive, whether an independent opinion is required, and what remedy is available.
Heritage Auctions’ terms illustrate why the details matter: its sports collectibles provisions describe written challenge deadlines, expected evidence, possible limits on recognition of contrary opinions, and limits on remedies. Heritage also says bidders are responsible for reaching their own conclusion before bidding. Rules depend on the applicable terms and sale, so read the current terms attached to the actual lot rather than relying on a general description.

Understand program claims in their proper scope
Authentication and auction processes vary by sport, league, team, era, item, and sale. MLB’s witnessed-authentication and hologram database process is specific to MLB. The NBA/Sotheby’s photomatching statement is specific to that program and remains subject to the exception stated for a lot. In March 2026, the LA Clippers announced MatchWornShirt as an official digital auction partner for game-worn jerseys, describing microchip verification and Fabricks certification; this is one team’s announced program, not a standard for other teams or auctions. Read the Clippers announcement.
For any lot, ask the auction house to confirm the claim and supporting documents in writing, and judge the answer under the current terms governing that sale.
