A carrier’s advertised Galaxy S26 payment is not necessarily the price of owning the phone. Before you sign, add the phone payments, any plan premium required for the offer, upfront charges, taxes and the balance due if you keep the handset. Compare that total with buying the same Canadian model outright and using a plan that fits your needs.
Compare the full cost over the same period
Build each option around the same ownership period and a comparable plan. A low device-payment line can be offset by a required plan or a deferred amount that becomes payable at the end. Bell’s Galaxy S26 listing, accessed October 3, 2026, is one example: it describes 24-month financing tied to an eligible two-year plan, with a deferred amount if you keep the phone or a return option subject to condition requirements. Those terms and amounts are Bell’s dated offer, not a rule for every Canadian carrier. Check Bell’s current listing before relying on it.

For a fair comparison, calculate the total using the plan you would actually choose with an outright phone purchase. Then calculate the carrier option including the eligible plan and any amount needed to keep the handset. Do not treat a trade-in estimate as guaranteed savings until you understand when and how it is assessed.
Understand return options and early-exit terms
A carrier return option is not the same as a normal retail return window. Read the agreement’s definition of acceptable condition, how the carrier assesses the device, and what you owe if it is damaged or otherwise rejected. Ask whether optional protection affects eligibility, and check the exact payment required if you decide to keep the phone instead.

Bell’s listing describes potential consequences for changing plans or cancelling early, alongside its return conditions. Other carriers may use different terms. Before accepting any offer, locate the clauses that explain early cancellation, plan changes, device balance, and return inspection in the contract—not just the product summary. Bell’s listing is a dated example, so recheck its live terms.
Check the Canadian model and network compatibility
Confirm the exact model number, storage configuration, and seller. A device listed for another market may not have the same network compatibility or SIM setup as the Canadian version. Ask the carrier to verify the precise model against its network, including VoLTE support, SIM provisioning, and relevant bands.

Videotron’s Galaxy S26 support page lists nano-SIM and eSIM and provides regional VoLTE certification information. That is useful for checking a particular carrier’s support details, but it does not establish compatibility for every S26 variant on every Canadian network. Review Videotron’s device support page and confirm the model with your own provider.
Know your carrier protections and warranty route
CRTC Wireless Code guidance says a device supplied by a service provider to provide wireless services must be provided unlocked. The simplified guidance also addresses disclosure of the manufacturer’s warranty before a provider offers extended warranty or insurance, and describes a trial period. The CRTC’s Wireless Code page also reports a consultation examining whether device financing plans comply with the Code; it does not determine whether a particular plan complies. See the CRTC’s current Wireless Code information.
Ask who handles warranty service, what proof of purchase is required, and how long the seller’s return window lasts and what condition it requires. Manufacturer warranty, a seller’s return policy, a carrier end-of-term return program, and optional insurance or protection are separate things. Compare coverage, exclusions, deductibles, duration, and any effect on a return offer rather than assuming an add-on is required.

Verify trade-in, storage, colour, and offer details
Samsung Canada presents trade-in as a way to receive credit toward a purchase and directs buyers to warranty information. The actual credit, eligibility, device assessment, and terms depend on the live offer. Samsung also cautions that colour availability can vary by country or carrier. Use this checklist before you accept
- Get the offer terms and quote for your province and account eligibility on the day you plan to buy.
- Confirm the exact eligible plan and calculate its cost against a suitable BYOD alternative.
- Add device payments, upfront charges, taxes, credits, and any deferred amount if you intend to keep the phone.
- Read the early-cancellation, plan-change, return-condition, and inspection clauses.
- Confirm the trade-in value and what happens if the assessment changes it.
- Verify the Canadian model number, storage, SIM/eSIM configuration, and carrier network support.
- Ask who provides warranty service and compare any optional protection with manufacturer coverage.
- Check the seller’s separate retail return window and condition requirements.
