Before buying a discounted laptop at Best Buy, identify whether it is clearance, open-box, refurbished, or pre-owned; read the exact condition notes; confirm the charger, warranty, seller, and return terms; and compare the actual configuration with what you need. If it runs Windows 10, check its upgrade eligibility and security-support options before you pay.
1. Identify what kind of discounted laptop it is
A lower price can reflect different things. Best Buy’s Outlet guide distinguishes four categories:

| Pre-owned | Used; original packaging or some accessories may be missing. | Confirm included items and warranty terms, which vary by product. |
For open-box products, Best Buy describes Excellent as appearing like new and including original parts and accessories or suitable replacements. Good may have minor to moderate cosmetic wear and may lack original packaging or some accessories. Fair may show more noticeable flaws and commonly have missing accessories. A grade is a quick summary, not a complete inspection report: read the specific listing’s notes.

Look for mentions of screen blemishes, dents, scratches, missing components, replacement parts, or prior display use. Best Buy advises checking physical condition and whether items are missing. If you can inspect the laptop in store, examine the screen and case in good light, then test what you reasonably can:

- Type on the keyboard and check the trackpad.
- Look for visible screen damage, uneven areas, or dead pixels.
- Check the ports you expect to use and confirm the laptop charges.
- Test the webcam, speakers, and Wi-Fi if practical.
These are practical checks, not a guarantee that every internal component has been independently tested. Best Buy says open-box items are tested or inspected for working order and appearance, but the unit-level description remains important.
3. Verify the charger and other included accessories
Do not assume a discounted laptop comes with everything supplied in a new retail package. Confirm that the correct power adapter is included; Best Buy specifically calls out power cords and chargers among the accessories buyers should verify. Check other model-specific essentials too, such as a stylus or detachable keyboard if the laptop requires one for your intended use. If something is missing, establish the exact compatible replacement and its cost before deciding whether the discount still makes sense.

4. Match the exact configuration to your workload
Check the model number and the listed processor, memory, storage, display, graphics, ports, and operating system—not just the product-family name or discount percentage. Best Buy’s laptop listings provide filters for specifications such as RAM, processor, graphics, storage, and screen size. There is no single minimum specification for every buyer: document work, creative software, and gaming place different demands on a laptop.

A lower-priced version may have less memory, a smaller drive, or different graphics than the new laptop used as the reference price.

5. Check the warranty, seller, and protection terms
Find out whether the listing includes manufacturer coverage, retailer coverage, or neither, and read the term and exclusions. Warranty terms vary for refurbished and pre-owned products; do not assume the refurbished-product general guidance applies to a particular unit. Best Buy says Geek Squad Protection is available for Outlet purchases, but whether it is offered and what it covers are listing- and plan-specific. Also confirm who the seller is: Best Buy’s return policy says Marketplace purchases may have different terms.
6. Confirm the return window before checkout
Best Buy’s return policy, effective February 23, 2026, lists 15 days for most products for standard members and 60 days for My Best Buy Plus and Total members. The policy period applies to new, clearance, open-box, refurbished, and pre-owned products sold by Best Buy. 7. Check Windows support on older laptops
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 PCs still run, but Microsoft no longer provides regular security updates, fixes, or technical assistance. Eligible personal devices running Windows 10 version 22H2 can enroll in Extended Security Updates through October 12, 2027; this is a limited bridge, not a substitute for checking whether the laptop can move to a supported Windows version. Before buying an older model, verify its Windows 11 eligibility and the available support path against Microsoft’s Windows 10 support guidance.
8. Decide whether the discount is worth it
Compare the discounted laptop with a new unit of the same configuration. Then account for condition, missing accessories, warranty coverage, seller, and return period. A large discount on a different configuration—or a unit that needs a replacement charger—may be less valuable than it first appears. Best Buy also recommends comparing an open-box price with the new version.
