Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBefore buying a digital game, confirm that it works on your exact device, that the selected edition includes what you want, and that you understand its online, account-sharing, and refund conditions. Check the game’s own store listing and the refund policy for the store and region where you plan to buy; a franchise page or another platform’s rules are not enough.
Use this checklist before checkout
- Match the platform and generation. Check the listing for your specific PlayStation or Xbox generation, Switch or Switch 2, or PC storefront and operating system. A game appearing in a franchise search does not prove it runs on your device.
- Confirm the edition and contents. Verify whether the item is the full game, a remaster, an upgrade pack, DLC, a season pass, or bonus content. Read the included-content details rather than relying on the edition name.
- For PC, compare system requirements. Match the listed operating system, processor, graphics hardware, memory, and free storage against your computer. Also check whether the game requires a specific launcher or account.
- Check play modes and services. Confirm local and online player counts, cross-play, internet and account requirements, and whether a paid online membership is needed for the features you want.
- Understand who can play the purchase. Check which account owns the entitlement, how it works on another console, and whether other profiles can play it or need an internet connection.
- Read the applicable refund rules before downloading or preloading. Policies differ by platform, region, and product type; automatic downloads can affect eligibility.
- Review the final checkout screen. Confirm the item, edition, regional price, tax, and any recurring subscription charge before placing the order.
Check compatibility for your exact device
Listings may cover several platforms or generations, but support for one does not establish support for another. On Xbox, for example, a store page can display supported platforms and capabilities together; those details apply to the named game, not every Xbox title. See the Halo Infinite Xbox listing as an example of the information a product page may show.

On Nintendo systems, distinguish the original Switch game from a Switch 2 Edition. Nintendo says a Switch 2 Edition includes the original Switch game and an upgrade pack, but only select games have packs, pack contents vary, and the edition’s enhanced features may be playable only on Switch 2. Some upgrade packs may be available to eligible Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members; check the individual game and current membership conditions in Nintendo’s Switch 2 Edition upgrade guidance.
For PC, check the actual machine
“Available on PC” does not mean a game will run well—or at all—on every computer. Find the chosen game’s own publisher or storefront requirements and compare the minimum and recommended CPU, graphics processor, RAM, operating system, and storage with your system. PlayStation’s games support hub, for instance, provides title-specific PC requirements for some games; use the requirements for the title you intend to buy, not another game’s specifications.

Verify exactly what the edition includes
Compare the contents attached to the exact product in your cart. An upgrade pack may not be a standalone game; DLC may require the base game; and a higher-priced edition may bundle expansions or extras you do not need. Check whether listed bonus content is already included, needs a separate download, or must be claimed in the game.
Nintendo’s Minecraft for Nintendo Switch listing illustrates why this matters: it says the full game is required to use DLC and notes that some included packs must be downloaded from the in-game store. Those are details for that listing, not universal rules for every Nintendo game.

Check online play, accounts, and subscriptions
Look for the modes and services you actually plan to use: offline play, local multiplayer, online multiplayer, cross-play, internet access, a platform account, and a paid online membership. Do not assume that every game requires a subscription—or that online features are free. Nintendo says exceptions exist to the general Nintendo Switch Online requirement, so check the named game and Nintendo’s product listing rather than generalizing from another title.
For example, Nintendo’s Minecraft listing describes its supported play modes and says online features need internet access, a Nintendo Account, and Nintendo Switch Online membership. Xbox listings may likewise show specific multiplayer and cross-platform features, as in the Halo Infinite listing. Neither example determines what another game supports.

Find out which account owns it and how household access works
Digital purchases are account entitlements, and household access can depend on how the platform loads or shares a game. Nintendo says digital purchases are tied to the buyer’s Nintendo Account. Its current support guidance describes linking an account to up to two consoles that can load virtual game cards: when a card is loaded, any user on that console can play the game. On a console that cannot load a virtual game card, the purchasing account can play with an internet connection, but other users on that console cannot. Read Nintendo’s digital game purchase guidance for the described arrangement; do not assume a purchase works offline for every profile or on every console.
Know the store’s refund and preorder rules
Refund eligibility depends on the storefront, region, product type, and what has happened since purchase. Read the relevant policy before downloading, streaming, preloading, or launching a game. The rules below describe the linked policies, not global consumer-rights advice; applicable local law may provide separate rights.

| Store and scope | What the linked policy says | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation Store, US policy | A game or add-on refund request is generally available within 14 days of purchase only if download or streaming has not started. Faulty content and local-law rights may be treated separately. | Check the refund request guidance and US cancellation policy. Preorder timing depends on how far ahead of release you placed it; automatic downloads may begin if enabled. Subscription, consumable, wallet-fund, and voucher purchases have separate treatment. |
| Xbox games | Microsoft directs Xbox game refund requests to Xbox Support’s digital-game refund flow. | Use the route described by Microsoft Support; do not infer the outcome from Windows PC rules. |
| Microsoft Store digital goods on Windows PC | Microsoft says digital goods, including games and add-ons, are generally nonrefundable unless the offer or applicable law provides eligibility. Online return availability varies by market, and an individual item in a bundle cannot be returned. | Review Microsoft’s refund guidance for the market and item. |
| Nintendo of America digital products | Nintendo says payments through Nintendo Account services, including pre-purchases and subscriptions, are final and non-refundable except where Nintendo authorizes otherwise or applicable law requires it. | See Nintendo of America’s digital products refund policy. This is a US policy page; check the rules for your own region. |
| Steam | Steam has a voluntary refund policy and separate preorder guidance; eligibility depends on the applicable policy and circumstances. | Read Steam’s current refund information and preorder refund guidance rather than relying on a brief summary. |
Compare two editions or stores on the same terms
If you are deciding between storefronts or editions, compare them side by side instead of judging only by the headline price. The checkout total and regional tax depend on the offer and location, so confirm them at purchase.
