After installing iOS 27, first confirm your iPhone has finished updating and that the apps and services you rely on open normally. Then verify that a recent backup exists, review Background Security Improvements, and check any features or personal settings that matter to you. Apple says an iOS update leaves your data and settings unchanged, but still recommends backing up before updating.
1. Confirm the update finished and your iPhone works
Unlock your iPhone and check for an update prompt, restart request, or other onscreen instruction. Then open a few apps and services you depend on, such as messaging, email, and your preferred payment or travel app. This is a practical post-update check, not a special process Apple requires after every installation.
If an app asks you to update it or sign in again, follow that app’s instructions. If iOS is still asking to restart or complete an update, finish that first before moving on.

2. Verify a recent backup
Apple says updating iOS does not change your data or settings, but recommends making a backup before an update. Checking your backup now helps you know what recovery option is available if you later need to restore the phone. iCloud Backup covers information and settings that do not regularly sync to iCloud. Apple’s automatic iCloud backups run daily when the iPhone is connected to power, locked, and on Wi-Fi.

Check iCloud Backup
- Open Settings, tap your name, then tap iCloud > iCloud Backup.
- Check the date and time of the last successful backup.
- To make a new backup, tap Back Up Now and wait for it to finish.
Use a computer backup instead
You can also back up an iPhone to a Mac using Finder or to a Windows computer using iTunes. A computer backup is stored on that computer rather than in iCloud. Apple supports encrypting a local backup with a password; encryption options are available for Mac Finder backups and Windows backups. Keep the password safe because you need it to use an encrypted backup.

3. Check Background Security Improvements
Apple says Background Security Improvements deliver additional security protections between software updates. To check whether automatic installation is enabled, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Background Security Improvements and turn on Automatically Install if you want these improvements installed automatically.
Apple notes that compatibility issues are rare, but an improvement may be temporarily removed in such a case and included in a later software update. 4. Look up iOS 27 features for your iPhone and region
Apple’s iOS 27 feature page highlights expanded child-safety features and Photos changes, including Apple Intelligence editing tools and Shared Albums improvements. Feature availability can depend on the device, region, or language, so check Apple’s current iOS 27 feature documentation before assuming a feature will appear on your iPhone. If a feature is unavailable, its absence alone does not mean the update failed.

- Privacy: review app permissions for location, microphone, camera, and other sensitive access.
