Before heading to vote in person, check your state or local election office’s current instructions. Bring any identification your jurisdiction requires; rules differ, and not every voter needs photo ID. If you want to consult choices while voting, paper notes are a useful fallback when local phone rules are unclear.

Quick checklist: what to bring

  • Required identification: Check your state or local election office to learn whether you need ID and which forms qualify.
  • Paper notes or a sample ballot: These can help you remember choices, but verify whether and how they may be used in the voting booth.
  • Accessibility aids or other personal items you need: Ask your local election office about site-specific instructions, since the rules reviewed here do not establish a nationwide policy for every item.

What to leave at home or keep put away

  • Campaign clothing, accessories, or flyers: Keep them outside areas where local rules restrict campaign materials. Michigan, for example, advises voters not to wear campaign items or bring campaign flyers within 100 feet of a polling place.
  • Plans to photograph or record: Treat photography and recording as restricted unless election officials clearly say they are allowed. Rules can cover the voting area or a broader zone around it.
  • Phone use during voting: If you bring a phone, be ready to silence it and put it away. Some jurisdictions permit limited use; others prohibit wireless-device use in the room where voting takes place.

Check your local ID rule before you go

Voter ID requirements vary by jurisdiction. The examples below show why it is unsafe to assume either that everyone needs photo ID or that no one does.

Jurisdiction Guidance in the official source
Arizona Voters are asked to present one qualifying photo ID or two qualifying items from the state’s other lists. Arizona Secretary of State
California Most voters do not need ID. A limited exception applies to certain first-time voters who registered by mail. California Secretary of State
Michigan Voters who lack or forgot photo ID can sign an affidavit and cast a ballot. Michigan Secretary of State

These are examples, not a nationwide survey. Confirm the requirement and any fallback procedure with the election office where you vote.

Paper notes and sample ballots can be useful

Official guidance in North Carolina says, “Voters may bring voting guides, notes, and other materials into the voting booth.” North Carolina State Board of Elections California also says voters may bring sample ballots and similar explanatory materials. California Secretary of State

Because rules differ, check local instructions before relying on a particular material in the booth. If you are unsure whether a phone may be used, write down your reminders on paper instead.

Phone, photography, and recording rules are local

Do not assume you can use a phone, take a ballot selfie, or record at a polling place. North Carolina allows devices for candidate information under stated limits, but prohibits photographing or videotaping a voted ballot and electronic communication during voting. Ask about other personal items and accessibility needs

The official guidance cited here does not establish one national rule for medication, bags, food, water, or every accessibility-related item. Contact your local election office before you go if you need to bring one of these or have a question about site access. That office can provide the current instructions for your polling place.
